Constraints on QCD Sum-rules from the H\"older Inequalities
A new technique based on H\"older's integral inequality is applied to QCD
sum-rules to provide fundamental constraints on the sum-rule parameters. These
constraints must be satisfied if the sum-rules are to consistently describe
integrated physical cross-sections, but these constraints do not require any
experimental data and therefore can be applied to any hadronic spectral
function. As an illustration of this technique the Laplace sum-rules of the
light-quark correlation function for the vector and the axial-vector currents
are examined in detail. We find examples of inconsistency between the
inequalities and sum-rule parameters used in some previous analyses of the
vector and axial-vector channels.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 4 figures available upon request, to appear in

Probabilistic approach to provide scenarios of earthquake-induced slope failures (PARSIFAL) applied to the Alcoy Basin (South Spain)
The PARSIFAL (Probabilistic Approach to pRovide Scenarios of earthquake-Induced slope FAiLures) approach was applied in the basin of Alcoy (Alicante, South Spain), to provide a comprehensive scenario of earthquake-induced landslides. The basin of Alcoy is well known for several historical landslides, mainly represented by earth-slides, that involve urban settlement as well as infrastructures (i.e., roads, bridges). The PARSIFAL overcomes several limits existing in other approaches, allowing the concomitant analyses of: (i) first-time landslides (due to both rock-slope failures and shallow earth-slides) and reactivations of existing landslides; (ii) slope stability analyses of different failure mechanisms; (iii) comprehensive mapping of earthquake-induced landslide scenarios in terms of exceedance probability of critical threshold values of co-seismic displacements.
Geotechnical data were used to constrain the slope stability analysis, while specific field surveys were carried out to measure jointing and strength conditions of rock masses and to inventory already existing landslides. GIS-based susceptibility analyses were performed to assess the proneness to shallow earth-slides as well as to verify kinematic compatibility to planar or wedge rock-slides and to topples. The experienced application of PARSIFAL to the Alcoy basin: (i) confirms the suitability of the approach at a municipality scale, (ii) outputs the main role of saturation in conditioning slope instabilities in this case study, (iii) demonstrates the reliability of the obtained results respect to the

Light Quenched Hadron Spectrum and Decay Constants on different Lattices
We present a study of (quenched) lattice configurations from
the APE collaboration, for using both the Wilson and the
SW-Clover fermion action. We determine the light hadronic spectrum and meson
decay constants. We extract the inverse lattice spacing using data at the
simulated values of the quark mass. We find an agreement with the experimental
data of for mesonic masses and for baryonic masses and
pseudoscalar decay constants. A larger deviation is present for the vector
decay constants.Comment: 3 pages, Talk presented at LATTICE96(spectrum
Tidal and rotational effects in the perturbations of hierarchical triple stellar systems. II. Eccentric systems - the case of AS Camelopardalis
We study the perturbations of a relatively close third star on a tidally
distorted eccentric eclipsing binary. We consider both the observational
consequences of the variations of the orbital elements and the interactions of
the stellar rotation with the orbital revolution in the presence of
dissipation. We concentrate mainly on the effect of a hypothetical third
companion on both the real, and the observed apsidal motion period. We
investigate how the observed period derived mainly from some variants of the
O-C relates to the real apsidal motion period. We carried out both analytical
and numerical investigations and give the time variations of the orbital
elements of the binary both in the dynamical and the observational reference
frames. We give the direct analytical form of an eclipsing O-C affected
simultaneously by the mutual tidal forces and the gravitational interactions
with a tertiary. We also integrated numerically simultaneously the orbital and
rotational equations for the possible hierarchical triple stellar system AS
Camelopardalis. We find that there is a significant domain of the possible
hierarchical triple system configurations, where both the dynamical and the
observational effects tend to measure longer apsidal advance rate than is
expected theoretically. This happens when the mutual inclination of the close
and the wide orbits is large, and the orbital plane of the tertiary almost
coincides with the plane of the sky. We also obtain new numerical results on
the interaction of the orbital evolution and stellar rotation in such triplets.
The most important fact is that resonances might occur as the stellar
rotational rate varies during the dissipation-driven synchronization process...Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures (reduced quality!), accepted for publication for

Light-Quark Mesons and Four-Quark Condensates at Finite Temperature
We propose an analog of the familiar gap equation for the case of four-quark
condensates at finite temperature. The condensates of interest correspond to
scalar, vector, psudoscalar, axial vector, and tensor Dirac structures. Working
with correlators at zero chemical potential without factorization, we arrive at
coupled equations for these four-quark condensates and the masses of certain
light-quark mesons. We study the temperature dependence of the four-quark
condensates and masses; in one of our models, factorization of the four-quark
condensates is shown to be increasingly violated as the temperature is
increased toward . The 2 tensor mesons a(1320)-f(1270) are
identified as especially sensitive probes of the four-quark condensates.Comment: Latex file, 6 Fig
Foraging Behavior under Starvation Conditions Is Altered via Photosynthesis by the Marine Gastropod, Elysia clarki
It has been well documented that nutritional state can influence the foraging behavior of animals. However, photosynthetic animals, those capable of both heterotrophy and symbiotic photosynthesis, may have a delayed behavioral response due to their ability to photosynthesize. To test this hypothesis we subjected groups of the kleptoplastic sea slug, Elysia clarki, to a gradient of starvation treatments of 4, 8, and 12 weeks plus a satiated control. Compared to the control group, slugs starved 8 and 12 weeks displayed a significant increase in the proportion of slugs feeding and a significant decrease in photosynthetic capability, as measured in maximum quantum yield and [chl a]. The 4 week group, however, showed no significant difference in feeding behavior or in the metrics of photosynthesis compared to the control. This suggests that photosynthesis in E. clarki, thought to be linked to horizontally-transferred algal genes, delays a behavioral response to starvation. This is the first demonstration of a link between photosynthetic capability in an animal and a modification of foraging behavior under conditions of starvation

Light Quenched Hadron Spectrum and Decay Constants on different Lattices
INTRODUCTION In the last four years the Ape group has been extensively studying lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. Several simulations have been done to study weak matrix elements such as f D , fB , BK and to study semileptonic decays [1]-[5]. These simulations have allowed to study the dependence of the results on the spacing a and to investigate finite size effects. Here we report results for light meson masses and decay constants and baryon spectroscopy. The results have been obtained from eight sets of data with fi = 6:0, 6:2 and 6:4 using either the Wilson action or the "improved" SW-Clover action, in order to reduce O(a) effects. The parameters used in each simulation are listed in Table 2. The Ape group has performed extensive comparisons on data extracted from smeared and non-s
