From piles to tiles: designing for overview and control in case handling systems

    Get PDF
Poor overview and control of workload in electronic case handling systems is a potential health risk factor which affects the users. Case handling systems must therefore be designed to give the users a better overview and maximum control over their workload. In an earlier study, we developed a prototype interface for managing cases, based on the piles metaphor. This paper introduces a second prototype, which is designed to incorporate the findings of an evaluation of the piles metaphor prototype. In this second prototype cases are visualized as “tiles”, reflecting the number and complexity of the cases. This paper also describes some the results of the evaluation of the tiles prototype

Ömhet i ryggmuskulatur kunde påvisas hos sex hästar. The health of the riding school horse is important in order to be lasting for a long time. Assessment of horse welfare can be carried out with different focus areas to identify specific problems. The aim of this study was to investigate whether good welfare was achieved in Swedish riding school horses by assessing several welfare aspects that could have an impact on their health. The question examined in the study was: How is the welfare of the Swedish riding school horse based on the Welfare Monitoring System? Six riding schools in Västmanland and Södermanland participated in this study. Out of the total number of horses at each riding school, 20 % were randomly selected for assessment. A total of 56 welfare aspects have been assessed on 28 riding school horses. A simplified assessment protocol translated into Swedish was created to facilitate the assessments. The results showed that the different types of housing were boxes (75 %) and tie-stalls (25 %). Most of the horses were rated as overweight. During visitation, palpatory findings in legs was detected in 71% of the horses. None of the horses were lame during the lameness control, but seven horses showed asymmetric movements. Scars or loss of hair was detected in most of the horses. Tension or sensitivity of the back muscles could be detected in six horses. At mouth control, 21% of the horses had ulcers in the corner of the mouth and 7% had ulcers on the bars. All horses received roughage-based feedings and had access to clean water. The social contact was achieved in both the paddock and through nose contact in the boxes or tie-stalls. A low number of stereotypes were found in the riding schools. The majority of the horses had neutral or interested behaviors towards humans and new objects. The conclusion is that the welfare of the Swedish riding school horse was good based on the assessment protocol from the Welfare Monitoring System. Aspects with a possible negative impact on welfare were obesity, palpatory findings in legs, loss of hair, tensed or sensitive back muscles and ulcers during mouth control. Aspects with a positive impact on welfare were roughage-based feed intake, social contact, a low number of stereotypical behavior and no lameness. All stables were safely constructed for horses and for visitors. The horses generally showed positive behaviors towards humans and new objects, which indicates that the horses were contented and felt safe in their environments

Barns matmot 2.0 : Diet, development, and food neophobia in early years. How to promote healthy diets in a kindergarten setting

    Get PDF
Early diet has a profound impact on a child’s development, growth, and future health. A varied diet with a high intake of vegetables is positive in several domains of health. In Norway, as in many other countries, the intake of vegetables is too low among both children and adults. An important barrier to vegetable intake in children is food neophobia. Food neophobia, meaning unwillingness to try unfamiliar foods, is a trait that is most explicit in children between two and six years of age. As this age period is important for the development of food preferences and lifelong dietary habits, understanding which factors are related to food neophobia in early age is important to know how to best improve long-term diet and lay the foundations for lifelong health. Most children eat several meals per day in kindergarten. The kindergarten setting is thus an arena with great opportunity to influence the food intake and food preferences of young children. Web-based intervention programs to promote healthy eating can be appealing, cost-effective and capable of reaching large groups of children and caregivers. Providing online resources and interactive tools also represents a promising way of providing support to kindergartens, however data on such interventions targeting diet and meals in kindergartens are scarce.publishedVersio

Rape is a crime that affects thousands of women and men. In Sweden there are approximately 3000 police reports every year and with a large existing number of hidden statistics. Society’s definition of rape is a matter of interpretation, which is influenced by moral views and creates myths of how victim and perpetrator should act for a situation to be classified as a ”real” rape. It is easier to define incidents as rape when certain circumstances occur according to existing gender stereotyped ideas. To explore how these perceptions affect the discourse of legal courts an analysis of a rape case was carried out. This by using an measuring instrument called the IRMA-scale. The scale contains 40 statements and was originally used on a survey group where the participants had to grade their agreement with every claim on a 7-point scale. The scale was modified to fit the purpose of the analysis in this essay. The material examined is a court case from the year 2007. The results show that, like in the rest of society, rape myths flourish in the Swedish court system. In conclusion, rape is viewed as a rather narrow concept which might create the consequence of making it difficult for women to define experiences as rape. This in turn reproduces the stereotypes of victim, perpetrator and crime

This essay aims to discuss the racism that is said to flourish in Europe, and more specifically in Sweden, today. This is done by examining the Sweden Democrats' policy program adopted in 2011. The method used to analyze the document is a theory-based content analysis. The theory used for the analysis is the definiton of racism done by George M. Fredrickson as it is presented in his book "Racism: a short history". The results show that it is not evident that the views and opinions of the Sweden Democrats are racist as much as they can be described as culturalist and xenophobic. Based on the results the possible danger of not defining certain aspects as racism is further discussed, as well as the issue of the Sweden Democrats' use of language and words in relation to the anti-racist discourse and lastly some thoughts on what a political policy programme in reality entails is presented

Imagination as a skill : a Bayesian proposal

    Get PDF
In recent works, Kind (2020a, b) has argued that imagination is a skill, since it possesses the two hallmarks of skill: (i) improvability by practice, and (ii) control. I agree with Kind that (i) and (ii) are indeed hallmarks of skill, and I also endorse her claim that imagination is a skill in virtue of possessing these two features. However, in this paper, I argue that Kind’s case for imagination’s being a skill is unsatisfactory, since it lacks robust empirical evidence. Here, I will provide evidence for (i) by considering data from mental rotation experiments and for (ii) by considering data from developmental experiments. I conclude that imagination is a skill, but there is a further pressing question of how the cognitive architecture of imagination has to be structured to make this possible. I begin by considering how (ii) can be implemented sub-personally. I argue that this can be accounted for by positing a selection mechanism which selects content from memory representations to be recombined into imaginings, using Bayesian generation. I then show that such an account can also explain (i). On this basis, I hold that not only is imagination a skill, but that it is also plausibly implemented sub-personally by a Bayesian selection mechanism
