    Polynomial-Sized Topological Approximations Using The Permutahedron

    Classical methods to model topological properties of point clouds, such as the Vietoris-Rips complex, suffer from the combinatorial explosion of complex sizes. We propose a novel technique to approximate a multi-scale filtration of the Rips complex with improved bounds for size: precisely, for nn points in Rd\mathbb{R}^d, we obtain a O(d)O(d)-approximation with at most n2O(dlogā”k)n2^{O(d \log k)} simplices of dimension kk or lower. In conjunction with dimension reduction techniques, our approach yields a O(polylog(n))O(\mathrm{polylog} (n))-approximation of size nO(1)n^{O(1)} for Rips filtrations on arbitrary metric spaces. This result stems from high-dimensional lattice geometry and exploits properties of the permutahedral lattice, a well-studied structure in discrete geometry. Building on the same geometric concept, we also present a lower bound result on the size of an approximate filtration: we construct a point set for which every (1+Ļµ)(1+\epsilon)-approximation of the \v{C}ech filtration has to contain nĪ©(logā”logā”n)n^{\Omega(\log\log n)} features, provided that Ļµ<1logā”1+cn\epsilon <\frac{1}{\log^{1+c} n} for cāˆˆ(0,1)c\in(0,1).Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur

    Custodianship and Care: Women and Reading in Anita Desaiā€™s Clear Light of Day

    Several scholars have noted how the Indian state has been able to care for women only by placing them in custody of the family or the community, often overseen by male relatives. How do novels by Indian women writers intervene in this difficult social and legal problem? This paper answers this question by integrating feminist scholarship on the place of Indian women in postcolonial India with another scholarly tradition: the ethics of care. Conventionally, these two bodies of writing have not been in direct dialogue. This paper facilitates a conversation by close-reading Anita Desaiā€™s Clear Light of Day, a novel that powerfully describes the struggles of educated women in independent India through a perceptive depiction of the complexities of care. It argues that a postcolonial theory of reading based on care must account for the powerful influence of custodianship in postcolonial India

    Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji pengaruh kepemilikan asing dan ukuran perusahaan terhadap transfer pricing. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang menggunakan laporan tahunan perusahaan sebagai data sekunder. Populasi penelitiannya terdiri dari 49 perusahaan pertambangan. Sampel yang dipilih sebanyak 18 laporan tahunan perusahaan pertambangan periode 2017-2020 yang menghasilkan 72 observasi yang digunakan sebagai data sekunder sesuai dengan kriteria sample dan tercatat di Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI). Peneliti menggunakan metode purposive sampling sebagai salah satu teknik pengambilan sampel. Data yang didapat kemudian dianalisis melalui aplikasi Eviews 12 dengan mempergunakan regresi data panel. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa tidak terdapat pengaruh pada kepemilikan asing dan ukuran perusahaan terhadap transfer pricing

    One-to-many face recognition with bilinear CNNs

    The recent explosive growth in convolutional neural network (CNN) research has produced a variety of new architectures for deep learning. One intriguing new architecture is the bilinear CNN (B-CNN), which has shown dramatic performance gains on certain fine-grained recognition problems [15]. We apply this new CNN to the challenging new face recognition benchmark, the IARPA Janus Benchmark A (IJB-A) [12]. It features faces from a large number of identities in challenging real-world conditions. Because the face images were not identified automatically using a computerized face detection system, it does not have the bias inherent in such a database. We demonstrate the performance of the B-CNN model beginning from an AlexNet-style network pre-trained on ImageNet. We then show results for fine-tuning using a moderate-sized and public external database, FaceScrub [17]. We also present results with additional fine-tuning on the limited training data provided by the protocol. In each case, the fine-tuned bilinear model shows substantial improvements over the standard CNN. Finally, we demonstrate how a standard CNN pre-trained on a large face database, the recently released VGG-Face model [20], can be converted into a B-CNN without any additional feature training. This B-CNN improves upon the CNN performance on the IJB-A benchmark, achieving 89.5% rank-1 recall.Comment: Published version at WACV 201

    A Comparative Study on the Effect of the Use of Magnet Summary Strategy and Herringbone Strategy on Studentsā€™ Reading Comprehension at SMK Kansai Pekanbaru

    This research was aimed to compare the effects of using Magnet Summary strategy and Herringbone strategy on studentsā€™ reading comprehension at SMK Kansai Pekanbaru. The research design was a quasi-experiment focusing on experimental comparison design. The subject of the study was second year students of SMK Kansai Pekanbaru in the academic year 2016/2017 and the object was class XI TI 1 and class XI TI 2 c. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling technique. Two classes of both experimental groups consisting of fifty students were given a pre-test and a post-test. To analyze the data, independent t-test and paired sample t-test were used and calculated by SPSS version 20. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference of studentsā€™ reading comprehension of report texts after being taught Magnet Summary and Herringbone strategy. Magnet Summary strategy had the effect size or eta-squared of about 44.50% while Herringbone strategy had the effect size or eta-squared of about 48.65%. In conclusion, Herringbone strategy had highest effect compared to Magnet Summary strategy on studentsā€™ reading comprehension

    Marine environment is one of the natural ecosystem which is been affected by the unscrupulous human activities. Lots of efforts are taken to preserve and maintain the balance of the aquatic resources by responsible bodies. European Union convention on the law of the sea has a great impact on avoiding the IUU fishing activities of the countries with large scaled fisheries industry. Fishing grounds should be harvested with caution otherwise whole could be endanger in extinction while harvesting the whole school of fish. There the fishermen are responsible for releasing under-weight fishes and the other fish types which are prohibited to be caught. With the technology all the manual works has been eased and heightened in accuracy wise. Albeit the advantages are there, the main drawback is that they are being expensive. Localizing those products and requirement adding has been the major gap which has limited those commercial products being popularized in the countries with native languages.     ABSTRAK Aruni Shakilla Assdianie, 2019. ā€œPENERAPAN METODE CURAH PENDAPAT (BRAINSTORMING) DALAM PEMBELAJARAN PPKN UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN BERPIKIR KRITIS PESERTA DIDIK (Penelitian Tindakan Kelas Terhadap Peserta Didik Kelas XI IPS 4 SMAN 14 Bandung)ā€. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan yang terjadi di kelas XI IPS 4 SMA Negeri 14 Bandung. Hasil observasi pra penelitian menghasilkan bahwa kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik masih rendah, materi yang diberikan hanya berasal dari buku pelajaran, dan penggunaan metode pembelajaran yang kurang beragam. Permasalahan tersebut menyebabkan proses pembelajaran di kelas menjadi pasif sehingga peserta didik tidak dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berpikir kritisnya. Oleh karena itu, dalam penelitian ini peneliti mencoba menerapkan metode curah pendapat (brainstorming) sebagai upaya untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik dalam pembelajaran PPKn. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dengan menggunakan pendekatan mix method. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan studi dokumentasi. Adapun hasil penelitiannya adalah: 1) Perencanaan pembelajaran PPKn dengan menerapkan metode pembelajaran curah pendapat (brainstorming) yaitu dengan melihat silabus dan menyusun Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP); 2) Pelaksanaan penerapan metode curah pendapat (brainstorming) dalam pembelajaran PPKn untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik dilaksanakan sebanyak tiga siklus dan pada setiap siklusnya mengalami peningkatan baik dalam hasil observasi aktivitas guru maupun peserta didik; 3) Hasil pembelajaran PPKn dengan menerapkan metode pembelajaran curah pendapat (brainstorming) mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik pada setiap siklusnya. Kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik pada siklus 1 dikategorikan ā€œkurangā€, siklus 2 dikategorikan ā€œcukupā€ dan pada siklus 3 dikategorikan ā€œbaikā€; 4) Hambatan yang dialami yaitu dalam alokasi waktu, pengkondisian kelas, dan pemahaman peserta didik mengenai metode yang digunakan namun dari semua hambatan atau kendala tersebut dapat diatasi oleh peneliti dengan upaya dan perbaikan-perbaikan pada setiap siklusnya. "IMPLEMENTATION OF BRAINSTORMING METHODS IN CIVICS LEARNING TO IMPROVE CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY OF STUDENTS (Classroom Action Research on Students of Class XI IPS 4 of SMAN 14 Bandung)". This research is motivated by problems that occur in class XI IPS 4 Bandung 14 High School. The results of the pre-research observation showed that students critical thinking skills were still low, the material provided only came from textbooks, and the use of learning methods that were less diverse. These problems cause the learning process in the classroom to be passive so that students cannot develop their critical thinking skills. Therefore, in this study researchers tried to apply the brainstorming method as an effort to improve students critical thinking skills in civics learning. This study uses classroom action research methods using the mix method approach. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study are: 1) Planning of civics learning by applying brainstorm learning methods, namely by looking at the syllabus and preparing the Learning Implementation Plan (RPP); 2) The implementation of brainstorming methods in civics learning to improve students' critical thinking skills is carried out in three cycles and in each cycle has increased both in the results of observation of the activities of teachers and students; 3) The results of civics learning by applying brainstorm learning methods can improve students' critical thinking skills in each cycle. Students' critical thinking skills in cycle 1 are categorized as "lacking", cycle 2 is categorized as "sufficient" and in cycle 3 is categorized as "good"; 4) Obstacles experienced are in time allocation, class conditioning, and students' understanding of the methods used but from all obstacles or constraints can be overcome by the researcher with efforts and improvements in each cycle.
