A Comparative Study on the Effect of the Use of Magnet Summary Strategy and Herringbone Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension at SMK Kansai Pekanbaru

Abstract

This research was aimed to compare the effects of using Magnet Summary strategy and Herringbone strategy on students’ reading comprehension at SMK Kansai Pekanbaru. The research design was a quasi-experiment focusing on experimental comparison design. The subject of the study was second year students of SMK Kansai Pekanbaru in the academic year 2016/2017 and the object was class XI TI 1 and class XI TI 2 c. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling technique. Two classes of both experimental groups consisting of fifty students were given a pre-test and a post-test. To analyze the data, independent t-test and paired sample t-test were used and calculated by SPSS version 20. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension of report texts after being taught Magnet Summary and Herringbone strategy. Magnet Summary strategy had the effect size or eta-squared of about 44.50% while Herringbone strategy had the effect size or eta-squared of about 48.65%. In conclusion, Herringbone strategy had highest effect compared to Magnet Summary strategy on students’ reading comprehension
