Polynomial–exponential equations and Zilber's conjecture
Assuming Schanuel's conjecture, we prove that any polynomial–exponential equation in one variable must have a solution that is transcendental over a given finitely generated field. With the help of some recent results in Diophantine geometry, we obtain the result by proving (unconditionally) that certain polynomial–exponential equations have only finitely many rational solutions. This answers affirmatively a question of David Marker, who asked, and proved in the case of algebraic coefficients, whether at least the one variable case of Zilber's strong exponential-algebraic closedness conjecture can be reduced to Schanuel's conjecture
Many-body interactions and melting of colloidal crystals
We study the melting behavior of charged colloidal crystals, using a
simulation technique that combines a continuous mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann
description for the microscopic electrolyte ions with a Brownian-dynamics
simulation for the mesoscopic colloids. This technique ensures that many-body
interactions between the colloids are fully taken into account, and thus allows
us to investigate how many-body interactions affect the solid-liquid phase
behavior of charged colloids. Using the Lindemann criterion, we determine the
melting line in a phase-diagram spanned by the colloidal charge and the salt
concentration. We compare our results to predictions based on the established
description of colloidal suspensions in terms of pairwise additive Yukawa
potentials, and find good agreement at high-salt, but not at low-salt
concentration. Analyzing the effective pair-interaction between two colloids in
a crystalline environment, we demonstrate that the difference in the melting
behavior observed at low salt is due to many-body interactions
DELight: a Direct search Experiment for Light dark matter with superfluid helium
To reach ultra-low detection thresholds necessary to probe unprecedentedly
low Dark Matter masses, target material alternatives and novel detector designs
are essential. One such target material is superfluid He which has the
potential to probe so far uncharted light Dark Matter parameter space at
sub-GeV masses. The new ``Direct search Experiment for Light dark matter'',
DELight, will be using superfluid helium as active target, instrumented with
magnetic micro-calorimeters. It is being designed to reach sensitivity to
masses well below 100\,MeV in Dark Matter-nucleus scattering interactions.Comment: IDM2022 proceedings submitted to SciPos

Melting of tantalum at high pressure determined by angle dispersive x-ray diffraction in a double-sided laser-heated diamond-anvil cell
The high pressure and high temperature phase diagram of Ta has been studied
in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using x-ray diffraction measurements
up to 52 GPa and 3800 K. The melting was observed at nine different pressures,
being the melting temperature in good agreement with previous laser-heated DAC
experiments, but in contradiction with several theoretical calculations and
previous piston-cylinder apparatus experiments. A small slope for the melting
curve of Ta is estimated (dTm/dP = 24 K/GPa at 1 bar) and a possible
explanation for this behaviour is given. Finally, a P-V-T equation of states is
obtained, being the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient
and the bulk modulus estimated.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, to appear in J.Phys.:Cond.Matte
Emerging evidence for platelets as immune and inflammatory effector cells
pre-printWhile traditionally recognized for their roles in hemostatic pathways, emerging evidence demonstrates that platelets have previously unrecognized, dynamic roles that span the immune continuum. These newly recognized platelet functions, including the secretion of immune mediators, interactions with endothelial cells, monocytes, and neutrophils, toll-like receptor (TLR) mediated responses, and induction of neutrophil extracellular trap formation, bridge thrombotic and inflammatory pathways and contribute to host defense mechanisms against invading pathogens. In this focused review, we highlight several of these emerging aspects of platelet biology and their implications in clinical infectious syndromes
Evidence for the h_b(1P) meson in the decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P)
Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar
detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for
the spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the
sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We
observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil
mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width
of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its
significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the
value (4.3 +/- 1.1(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.)) x 10^{-4} for the product branching
fraction BF(Upsilon(3S)-->pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b-->gamma eta_b).Comment: 8 pages, 4 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (Rapid
