Are multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental profiles of children born very preterm at age 2 relevant to their long-term development?: A preliminary study
To identify distinctive multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental profiles of relatively healthy children born very preterm (VPT) and describe the longitudinal course of these profiles up to age 10. At 2 years of corrected age, 84 children born VPT underwent standardized testing for cognitive, language, speech, motor, behavioral, and auditory nerve function. These data were submitted to factor and cluster analysis. Sixty-one of these children underwent cognitive, language, and behavioral assessment again at age 10. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze longitudinal trajectories for each profile. Four neurodevelopmental profiles were identified at age 2. Profile 1 children (n = 22/26%) had excellent cognitive-language-motor function, normal behavioral and auditory nerve function, but showed an unexpected severe decline up to age 10. Profile 2 children (n = 16/19%) had very low behavioral function, low cognitive-language-motor function, and accelerated auditory nerve function. Their scores remained low up until age 10. Profile 3 children (n = 17/20%) had delayed auditory nerve function, low behavioral function, and slightly lower cognitive-language-motor function. They showed the most increasing trajectory. Profile 4 children (n = 29/35%) had very low cognitive-language-motor function, normal behavioral and auditory nerve function, but showed wide variation in their trajectory. Our preliminary study showed that a multidisciplinary profile-oriented approach may be important in children born VPT to improve counseling and provide targeted treatment for at risk children. High performers at age 2 may not be expected to maintain their favorable development. Behavioral problems might negatively impact language development. Delayed auditory nerve function might represent a slow start and catch-up development
Linguistic features in children born very preterm at preschool age
6noAIM This cross-sectional study focused on the effect of very preterm (VPT) birth on language
development by analysing phonological, lexical, grammatical, and pragmatic skills and
assessing the role of cognitive and memory skills.
METHOD Sixty children (29 males, 31 females) born VPT (<32wks) aged 5 years were
compared with 60 children with typical development. The linguistic assessment was
performed by administering a battery of Italian tests for the evaluation of language; cognitive
and memory skills were assessed by Raven’s coloured progressive matrices and digit span
subtest (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children [WISC-III]).
RESULTS Children born VPT showed delays in lexical (comprehension: z-score difference
1.18; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.60 to 0.77; naming: 0.88; 95% CI 1.19 to 0.58)
and pragmatic skills (comprehension: 0.76; 95% CI 1.02 to 0.49; narrative production:
0.47; 95% CI 0.72 to 0.23). Delays in phonology and grammar were less diffuse,
involving productive skills (1.09; 95% CI 1.64 to 0.54; 0.48; 95% CI 0.85 to 0.12,
respectively), and were dependent by cognitive and memory skills. Lexical delays were more
specific.
INTERPRETATION The linguistic profile of children born preterm is characterized by some
abilities more impaired than others. This highlights the need of a linguistic assessment at the
end of preschool age in order to plan a focused intervention aimed at improving lexical and

Associations of socioeconomic deprivation and preterm birth with speech, language, and communication concerns among children aged 27 to 30 months
Importance: Successful acquisition of language is foundational for health and well-being across the life course and is patterned by medical and social determinants that operate in early life.
Objective: To investigate the associations of neighborhood disadvantage, gestational age, and English as first language with speech, language, and communication concerns among children aged 27 to 30 months.
Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study used birth data from the National Health Service maternity electronic medical record linked to the Child Health Surveillance Programme for preschool children. The cohort included 28 634 children in the United Kingdom (NHS Lothian, Scotland) born between January 2011 and December 2014 who were eligible for a health review at age 27 to 30 months between April 2013 and April 2016. Data analysis was conducted between January 2018 and February 2019.
Exposures: The associations of neighborhood deprivation (using the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2016 quintiles), gestational age, and whether English was the first language spoken in the home with preschool language function were investigated using mutually adjusted logistic regression models.
Main Outcomes and Measures: Speech, language, and communication (SLC) concern ascertained at age 27 to 30 months.
Results: Records of 28 634 children (14 695 [51.3%] boys) with a mean (SD) age of 27.7 (2.2) months were matched. After excluding records with missing data, there were 26 341 records. The prevalence of SLC concern was 13.0% (3501 of 26 963 children with SLC data). In fully adjusted analyses, each 1-week increase in gestational age from 23 to 36 weeks was associated with an 8.8% decrease in the odds of a child having an SLC concern reported at 27 months (odds ratio, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.90-0.93). The odds of a child for whom English is not the first language of having SLC concern at age 27 to 30 months were 2.1-fold higher than those for a child whose first language is English (OR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.66-2.64). The odds ratio for having an SLC concern among children living in the most deprived neighborhoods, compared with the least deprived neighborhoods, was 3.15 (95% CI, 2.79-3.56). The estimated probabilities for preterm children having an SLC concern were highest for those living in the most deprived areas.
Conclusions and Relevance: This study found that SLC concerns at age 27 to 30 months are common and independently associated with increasing levels of neighborhood deprivation and lower gestational age. Policies that reduce childhood deprivation could be associated with improved preschool language ability and potentially avoid propagation of disadvantage across the life course, including for children born preterm

This paper discusses best practices for sharing and reusing Ground Truth in Handwritten Text Recognition infrastructures, and ways to reference and acknowledge contributions to the creation and enrichment of data within these Machine Learning systems. We discuss how one can publish Ground Truth data in a repository and, subsequently, inform others. Furthermore, we suggest appropriate citation methods for HTR data, models, and contributions made by volunteers. Moreover, when using digitised sources (digital facsimiles), it becomes increasingly important to distinguish between the physical object and the digital collection. These topics all relate to the proper acknowledgement of labour put into digitising, transcribing, and sharing Ground Truth HTR data. This also points to broader issues surrounding the use of Machine Learning in archival and library contexts, and how the community should begin toacknowledge and record both contributions and data provenance

Language ability in preterm children is associated with arcuate fasciculi microstructure at term.
In the mature human brain, the arcuate fasciculus mediates verbal working memory, word learning, and sublexical speech repetition. However, its contribution to early language acquisition remains unclear. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the role of the direct segments of the arcuate fasciculi in the early acquisition of linguistic function. We imaged a cohort of 43 preterm born infants (median age at birth of 30 gestational weeks; median age at scan of 42 postmenstrual weeks) using high b value high-angular resolution diffusion-weighted neuroimaging and assessed their linguistic performance at 2 years of age. Using constrained spherical deconvolution tractography, we virtually dissected the arcuate fasciculi and measured fractional anisotropy (FA) as a metric of white matter development. We found that term equivalent FA of the left and right arcuate fasciculi was significantly associated with individual differences in linguistic and cognitive abilities in early childhood, independent of the degree of prematurity. These findings suggest that differences in arcuate fasciculi microstructure at the time of normal birth have a significant impact on language development and modulate the first stages of language learning. Habilidades comunicativas de crianças prematuras e prematuras extremas
Objetivo comparar o desempenho das habilidades comunicativas, de crianças nascidas prematuras, prematuras extremas e típicas de idade cronológica entre dois e três anos. Métodos participaram do estudo 72 crianças distribuídas em quatro grupos: 20 prematuros (GE-I), 16 prematuros extremos (GE-II) e 36 crianças com desenvolvimento típico (GC-I e GC-II), de idade cronológica entre dois a três anos. Houve pareamento quanto à idade cronológica e sexo. A avaliação constou da aplicação do Protocolo de Anamnese e Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo. O tratamento estatístico constou do Teste “t” Student e do Teste de Mann-Whitney (p ≤ 0,05). Resultados na comparação entre os grupos de prematuros e típicos (GE-I e GC-I e GEII e GC-II), quanto às habilidades comunicativas verificou-se diferenças significantes, apesar da heterogeneidade no desempenho dos prematuros e prematuros extremos. Na comparação entre os prematuros (GE-I e GE-II) não foram observadas diferenças significantes, entretanto, GE-I obteve desempenho superior em todas as categorias, exceto para a categoria uso de gestos. As categorias de menor ocorrência para GE-I foram: respeitar troca de turno, participar e manter atividade dialógica. Para o GE-II foram: participar e manter atividade dialógica, realizar ordens complexas, iniciar e respeitar troca de turno, funções de informar, oferecer e produzir frases. Conclusão houve diferenças significantes no desempenho comunicativo das crianças prematuras e prematuras extremas, quanto comparadas às crianças típicas, mas não houve diferenças significantes na comparação entre os prematuros. Apesar dos resultados indicarem que os grupos de prematuros tendem ao atraso no desenvolvimento das habilidades comunicativas, os grupos não demonstraram ser homogêneos
