Wide field interferometric imaging with single-mode fibers
Classical single-mode fiber interferometers, using one fiber per aperture,
have very limited imaging capabilities and small field of view. Observations of
extended sources (resolved by one aperture) cannot be fully corrected for
wavefront aberrations: accurate measurements of object visibilities are then
made very difficult from ground-based fiber interferometers. These limitations
are very severe for the new generation of interferometers, which make use of
large telescopes equipped with adaptive optics, but can be overcome by using
several fibers per aperture. This technique improves the wide field imaging

L’ethnologie de sauvegarde a répondu à un besoin de fonder l’identité d’une communauté sur les pratiques culturelles du passé. L’état des collectes et des dépôts d’archives où les traces de ces pratiques sont conservées devraient permettre de communiquer les valeurs qu’elles représentent et d’amorcer une ethnologie de contact et de relation.Ethnological research based on preservation aimed at enabling communities to forge an identity based on past cultural practices. Traces of these practices are preserved in fieldwork collections and archival centres. Taken as a whole, these should allow us to transmit the values they represent and to bring about an ethnology of cultural contacts and relationships
Integrated optics for astronomical interferometry - VI. Coupling the light of the VLTI in K band
Our objective is to prove that integrated optics (IO) is not only a good
concept for astronomical interferometry but also a working technique with high
performance. We used the commissioning data obtained with the dedicated K-band
integrated optics two-telescope beam combiner which now replaces the fiber
coupler MONA in the VLTI/VINCI instrument. We characterize the behaviour of
this IO device and compare its properties to other single mode beam combiner
like the previously used MONA fiber coupler. The IO combiner provides a high
optical throughput, a contrast of 89% with a night-to-night stability of a few
percent. Even if a dispersive phase is present, we show that it does not bias
the measured Fourier visibility estimate. An upper limit of 0.005 for the
cross-talk between linear polarization states has been measured. We take
advantage of the intrinsic contrast stability to test a new astronomical
prodecure for calibrating diameters of simple stars by simultaneously fitting
the instrumental contrast and the apparent stellar diameters. This method
reaches an accuracy with diameter errors of the order of previous ones but
without the need of an already known calibrator. These results are an important
step of integrated optics and paves the road to incoming imaging interferometer
projects
Data reduction methods for single-mode optical interferometry - Application to the VLTI two-telescopes beam combiner VINCI
The interferometric data processing methods that we describe in this paper
use a number of innovative techniques. In particular, the implementation of the
wavelet transform allows us to obtain a good immunity of the fringe processing
to false detections and large amplitude perturbations by the atmospheric piston
effect, through a careful, automated selection of the interferograms. To
demonstrate the data reduction procedure, we describe the processing and
calibration of a sample of stellar data from the VINCI beam combiner. Starting
from the raw data, we derive the angular diameter of the dwarf star Alpha Cen
A. Although these methods have been developed specifically for VINCI, they are
easily applicable to other single-mode beam combiners, and to spectrally

Upregulation of cardioprotective SUR2A by sub-hypoxic drop in oxygen
AbstractThe effects of hypoxia on gene expression have been vigorously studied, but possible effects of small changes in oxygen tension have never been addressed. SUR2A is an atypical ABC protein serving as a regulatory subunit of sarcolemmal ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channels. Up-regulation of SUR2A is associated with cardioprotection and improved physical endurance. Here, we have found that a 24h-long exposure to slightly decreased ambient fractional concentration of oxygen (20% oxygen), which is an equivalent to oxygen tension at 350m above sea level, significantly increased levels of SUR2A in the heart despite that this drop of oxygen did not affect levels of O2, CO2 and hematocrit in the blood or myocardial levels of ATP, lactate and NAD/NADH/NAD+. Hearts from mice exposed to 20% oxygen were significantly more resistant to ischaemia-reperfusion when compared to control ones. Decrease in fractional oxygen concentration of just 0.9% was associated with phosphorylation of ERK1/2, but not Akt, which was essential for up-regulation of SUR2A. These findings indicate that a small drop in oxygen tension up-regulates SUR2A in the heart by activating ERK signaling pathway. This is the first report to suggest that a minimal change in oxygen tension could have a profound signaling effect
Estimating the phase in ground-based interferometry: performance comparison between single-mode and multimode schemes
In this paper we compare the performance of multi and single-mode
interferometry for the estimation of the phase of the complex visibility. We
provide a theoretical description of the interferometric signal which enables
to derive the phase error in presence of detector, photon and atmospheric
noises, for both multi and single-mode cases. We show that, despite the loss of
flux occurring when injecting the light in the single-mode component (i.e.
single-mode fibers, integrated optics), the spatial filtering properties of
such single-mode devices often enable higher performance than multimode
concepts. In the high flux regime speckle noise dominated, single-mode
interferometry is always more efficient, and its performance is significantly
better when the correction provided by adaptive optics becomes poor, by a
factor of 2 and more when the Strehl ratio is lower than 10%. In low light
level cases (detector noise regime), multimode interferometry reaches better
performance, yet the gain never exceeds 20%, which corresponds to the
percentage of photon loss due to the injection in the guides. Besides, we
demonstrate that single-mode interferometry is also more robust to the
turbulence in both cases of fringe tracking and phase referencing, at the
