Knowledge and Power of the Civil Society: an empirical study of Brazilian professionals working in the NGOs
This study critically analyses the way Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operate in Brazil and their contribution to the development of the Brazilian civil society. The notion of "power fields" and "habitus", proposed by Bourdieu (1989; 1996), provides the theoretical backdrop to our discussions. This focusses largely on the recursive connection between structure and agency which resonates with the work of Fligstein (2006). This study seeks to critically analyse the learning and social practice developed by professionals in NGOs in their daily activities. This study is based on qualitative research and the results indicated that the knowledge produced by Brazilian NGOs, through the recursive connection between the agents of the fields and the structures underpinning them, contributes to the expansion and transformation of the field in which they operate. This perspective shows that the knowledge generated by this NGOs give them a certain level of power and influence in the Brazilian civil society
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is the most prevalent innate error in amino acid
metabolism. PKU is characterized by the deficiency of a phenylalanine (Phe)
metabolism enzyme, phenylalanine hydroxylase, which is responsible for the
conversion of Phe into tyrosine (Tyr). Deficiency of this enzyme causes the
accumulation of Phe, which may cause severe cognitive impairment. Early
diagnosis through neonatal screening and a rapid therapeutic implementation
are essential to prevent irreversible sequelae. Therapeutic approach for PKU is
based on strict control of Phe intake through a lifelong diet restricted in proteinrich food. High dietary restrictions can lead to imbalances in other nutrients,
notably lipids.
Previous plasma/serum and red blood cells studies of PKU patients
with Phe-restricted diet revealed lipid changes, namely in lipoprotein’s
components and fatty acid profile. Despite the changes already reported,
further studies are needed to understand in detail the changes in the lipid
profile of PKU patients, particularly at the level of phospholipids, which also
have important signalling and regulatory functions. Thus, the main aim of this
work was to study the phenylketonuric phospholipidome in order to identify the
occurrence of changes in lipid profile. To this end, the plasma phospholipidenriched extracts obtained from PKU and healthy children (control group, CT)
were analysed by HILIC-MS/MS and GC-MS.
Using this approach, 187 lipid species belonging to 9 different
phospholipid classes and 3 ceramides were identified. Principal component
analysis of lipid species dataset showed a distinction between PKU and CT
groups. Univariate analysis revealed that 146 phospholipid species were
significantly different between groups. The species with major variation
included phosphatidylcholines (PC), bearing polyunsaturated fatty acids
(PUFA), which were more abundant in the PKU group. For patients with diet
supplemented with PUFA, the higher level of PUFA-containing lipid species
may be related with such supplementation. This study was the first report
comparing the plasma polar lipidome of PKU and healthy children, highlighting
that the phospholipidome of PKU children is significantly altered when
compared with healthy children.
In conclusion, the lipidomic approach used in this work allowed the
analysis and identification of the phospholipid profile of PKU and healthy
children. However, further studies with larger cohorts are needed to clarify if the
changes identified are specific to the phenylketonuric children, namely those
with PUFA supplementation.
A deficiência desta
As
espécies com maior variação incluíram principalmente fosfatidilcolinas,
contendo ácidos gordos polinsaturados (PUFA), estando estas mais
abundantes no grupo PKU.
Cataracts in Labrador Retriever and Jack Russell Terrier: a two-year retrospective study
Cataracts are among the most common ocular diseases and are a leading cause of vision loss in dogs and humans. Jack Russell Terriers (JRT) and Labrador Retrievers (LR) are among the canine breeds most affected by cataracts. This study aimed to analyse the clinical features and the surgical outcome of cataracts in JRT and LR in an ophthalmological reference Veterinary Hospital in the United Kingdom. Medical records from JRT and LR diagnosed with cataracts between January of 2015 and December of 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. Data related with identification, clinical history, pre-operative features and surgical outcome were analysed. Forty-four dogs (81 eyes), including 26 JRT and 18 LR were enrolled in the study. Mean ages were 10.2 ± 3.2 years in JRT and 8.5 ± 3.7 years in LR. Twenty-eight (63.6%) were females and 16 (36.4%) were males. Most dogs (84.1%) presented bilateral cataracts. The most prevalent type of cataracts was nuclear and cortical in JRT (42.9%), and subcapsular in LR (31.3%). Significant differences in cataract location within the lens were detected between the two breeds (P=0.013).Senile in JRT (n=7) and genetic in LR (n=7) were the most common aetiologies. Concomitant ocular lesions were more frequent in dogs presented with cataracts in advanced stages, and included lens position (n=18; JRT: n=15; LR: n=3) and retinal alterations (n=8; JRT: n=2; LR: n=6), and glaucoma (n=6; JRT: n=5; LR: n=1). Thirty-three animals (75.0%, 51 eyes) were submitted to phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement. Of these, 28 eyes (54.9%; JRT: n=21; LR: n=7) were visual, 17 eyes (33.3%; JRT: n=11; LR: n=6) presented impaired vision and six eyes (11.8%; JRT: n=0; LR: n=6) were blind at last clinical record. Post-operative complications were detected in 11 eyes (21.6%), being more frequent in dogs presented with cataracts in advanced stages. The obtained results and the multifactorial nature of cataracts call for further studies to identify and characterize the variables in a broader assessment, including other breeds and influencing factors. Vinte e oito (63,6%) eram do género feminino e 16 (36,4%) eram do género masculino. Aproximadamente 84% apresentaram cataratas bilaterais. Vinte e oito olhos (54,9%; JRT: n=21; LR: n=7) revelaram estar visuais, 17 olhos (33,3%; JRT: n=11; LR: n=6) apresentaram visão parcial e seis olhos (11,8%; JRT: n=0; LR: n=6) estavam cegos no último registo clínico disponível.
The influence of foreign stakeholders on the internationalization strategy of a born global in the health sector
The goal of this dissertation thesis is to fill in the gap in the literature regarding the
influence of foreign stakeholders in the definition of the internationalization strategy
for the health market, more specifically how they influence the definition of the
internationalization strategy of a born global company.
In order to answer the research question proposed we used qualitative research,
specifically a case study approach. After presenting the relevant literature regarding
this topic we collected primary and secondary data through interviews and archived
internal and external documentation.
Through the analyses of the information collected and based upon the theoretical
literature, we can conclude that the government is the major stakeholder influencer
with regards to the definition of the internationalization strategy of a born global in
Engineering model transformations with transML
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007%2Fs10270-011-0211-2Model transformation is one of the pillars of model-driven engineering (MDE). The increasing complexity of systems and modelling languages has dramatically raised the complexity and size of model transformations as well. Even though many transformation languages and tools have been proposed in the last few years, most of them are directed to the implementation phase of transformation development. In this way, even though transformations should be built using sound engineering principles—just like any other kind of software—there is currently a lack of cohesive support for the other phases of the transformation development, like requirements, analysis, design and testing. In this paper, we propose a unified family of languages to cover the life cycle of transformation development enabling the engineering of transformations. Moreover, following an MDE approach, we provide tools to partially automate the progressive refinement of models between the different phases and the generation of code for several transformation implementation languages. This work has been sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation with project METEORIC (TIN2008-02081), and by the R&D program of the Community of Madrid with projects “e-Madrid" (S2009/TIC-1650).
Age and some diseases, like Diabetes Mellitus (DM), can disrupt the natural bone remodeling process which leads to an increased fracture risk. Both types of DM have an significant impact on bone. This is due to a poor glicemic control, which is going to disrupt bone mineralization process , interfering with some molecules, like: some vitamins, protein glycation which leads to the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and production of cytokines and other molecules that are responsible for insulin resistance, and changes in insuline and insulin growth factor (IGF-1) levels, affecting osteoblast differentiation and contribute to a low bone mass. The diabetic patient is also a patient at high risk of bone fragility, once that some diabetes treatments have an negative impact on bone health and can increased fracture risk, such as thiazolidinediones, some diuretics and maybe insulin. Besides all this mechanisms, there are external factors that may contribute to a higher prevalence of fracture. Some neurological complications are quite common in DM and may lead to a higher risk of falling and therefore a higher risk of fracture. It is possible to predict the risk of fracture with some useful clinical tools that assess bone quality like BMD and FRAX. Many other diseases are associated with DM, such as obesity. For many years it was thought that obesity and an increased bone mineral density (BMD) were linked with a decreased risk of fracture, recent studies showed up that fat may be negatively correlated with BMD.Farmácia Químia, Hospital CUF Cascai
