Globular Clusters around Galaxies in Groups
We have obtained deep photometry of NGC 1199 (in HCG 22) and NGC 6868 (in the
Telescopium group). Both galaxies are the optically brightest galaxies of their
groups. Our analysis of B and R images taken with the Keck II and the VLT/ESO
telescopes, detected a population of globular clusters around both galaxies,
with total specific frequencies S_N=1.7\pm0.6 for NGC 1199 and S_N = 1.3\pm0.6
for NGC 6868. The color distributions of the globular cluster systems shows
bimodal peaks centered at (B-R)_0 = 1.13\pm0.10 and 1.42\pm0.10 (NGC 1199) and
(B-R)_0=1.12\pm0.10 and 1.42\pm0.10 (NGC 6868).Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. To appear in the proceedings of IAU Symp. 207,

Evolução dos pacientes com condrossarcoma grau I em relação ao tipo de tratamento cirúrgico
PURPOSE: To evaluate the oncological outcome of patients with grade I chondrosarcomas according to the type of surgical treatment performed, since there is still controversy regarding the need for aggressive resections to reach a successful outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 23 patients with grade I chondrosarcomas were reviewed. The mean age was 38.4 years, ranging from 11 to 70 years; 52% were men and 48% were women. The femur was the site of 13 tumors. The tumors were staged as IA (17, 74%) and IB (6, 26%). Regarding tumor location, 74% (17) were medullary, 22% (5) were peripheral, and 4% (1) was indeterminate. Tumor size ranged from 2 to 25 cm, mean 7.9 cm. Regarding the surgical procedure, 11 patients underwent intralesional resection, 9 patients underwent wide resection, and 3 underwent radical resection. The follow-up period ranged from 24 to 192 months. RESULTS: None of the patients developed local recurrence or metastases; 7 patients had other general complications. CONCLUSIONS: This data supports the use of less aggressive procedures for treatment of low-grade chondrosarcomas.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a evolução oncológica de portadores de condrossarcomas grau I de acordo com o tipo de tratamento cirúrgico efetuado.
The K luminosity-metallicity relation for dwarf galaxies and the tidal dwarf galaxies in the tails of HCG 31
We determine a K-band luminosity-metallicity (K-Z) relation for dwarf
irregular galaxies, over a large range of magnitudes, -20.5 < M_K < -13.5,
using a combination of K photometry from either the 2-micron all sky survey
(2MASS) or the recent study of Vadivescu er al. (2005), and metallicities
derived mainly with the T_e method, from several different studies. We then use
this newly-derived relation, together with published K_s photometry and our new
spectra of objects in the field of HCG 31 to discuss the nature of the possible
tidal dwarf galaxies of this group. We catalogue a new member of HCG 31, namely
"R", situated ~40 kpc north of the group center, composed by a ring of H alpha
knots which coincides with a peak in HI. This object is a deviant point in the
K-Z relation (it has too high metallicity for its luminosity) and its projected
distance to the parent galaxy and large gas reservoir makes it one of the most
promising tidal dwarf galaxy candidates of HCG 31, together with object F. The
subsystems A1, E, F, H and R all have metallicities similar to that of the
galaxies A+C and B, result that is expected in a scenario where those were
formed from material expelled from the central galaxies of HCG 31. While
objects A1, E and H will most probably fall back onto their progenitors, F and
R may survive as tidal dwarf galaxies. We find that two galaxies of HCG 31, G
and Q, have A+em spectral signatures, and are probably evolving toward a
post-starburst phase.Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures - Submitted to AJ - A version of this paper with

Iron transportation across the placenta
According to the classification of placental types among animals, the transfer of iron through the placenta can occur via: absorption connected to transferin through the outer surface of the trophoblast in direct contact with circulating maternal blood; absorption of the erythrocytes by the chorionic epithelium in direct contact with accumulation of blood extravased from haemotophagous areas; absorption by the chorionic epithelium in direct contact with iron enriched secretions from the endometrial glands and absorption by extravasations of the blood in the maternal-fetal surface and the subsequent phagocytosis of the erythrocytes by trophoblast cells described in bovine, small ruminants, canine and feline. The function of erythrophagocytosis observed after the extravasation of blood in the maternal-fetal interface is undefined in several species. Possibly, the iron is transferred to the fetus through the trophoblastic erythrophagocytosis in the hemophogous area of the placenta and also in the endometrial glands. In this literature survey, new methods of studies regarding placental transfer involving iron and other nutrients necessary for survival and maintenance of embryonic fetus to birth are proposed
Estudo experimental da ação dos anti-inflamatórios não hormonais inibidores seletivos da ciclooxigenase 2 (COX-2) e anti-inflamatórios tradicionais na regeneração óssea
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors in the process of bone regeneration in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four Wistar strain rats were subjected to osteotomy of the right femur and randomly divided into 3 groups according to the drug to be given (diclofenac, rofecoxib, or placebo). Each group was divided into 2 subgroups according to the time to euthanasia after the surgery. The animals of Subgroup 1 were submitted to euthanasia 2 weeks after surgery, and those of Subgroup 2, underwent euthanasia 4 weeks after surgery. Radiographic examinations and bone callus histomorphometry were analyzed. RESULTS: No intergroup statistical difference was found in the bone callus area or in bone formation area 2 and 4 weeks after surgery. Intra-group analysis concerning the bone neoformation area inside the callus showed a significant difference within the diclofenac group, which presented less tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Fracture consolidation in Wistar rats occurs within less than 2 weeks, and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs does not significantly influence this process.OBJETIVO: Comparar os efeitos do uso de antiinflamatórios não-esteróides tradicionais (AINES) e AINES que são inibidores seletivos da ciclooxigenase-2 (COX-2), no processo de regeneração óssea em ratos.
Photoinduced intersubband transition in undoped HgCdTe multiple quantum wells
We present photoinduced intersubband absorption measurements in HgCdTe undoped quantum wells. The transition energies and the linewidths are well described by a full 8×8 k⋅p Kane model calculation. Also, based on this model we show that different in‐plane effective masses for the first and second electron subbands should be considered in order to properly fit the low energy side of the experimental spectra. The experimental results can be explained using the calculated intersubband oscillator strength with no exciton enhancement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/69671/2/APPLAB-66-22-2998-1.pd
The epochs of early-type galaxy formation as a function of environment
The aim of this paper is to set constraints of the epochs of early-type
galaxy formation through the 'archaeology' of the stellar populations in local
galaxies. Using our models of absorption line indices that account for variable
abundance ratios, we derive the stellar population parameters of 124 early-type
galaxies in high and low density environments. We find that all three
parameters age, metallicity, and alpha/Fe ratio are correlated with velocity
dispersion. We further find evidence for an influence of the environment on the
stellar population properties. Massive early-type galaxies in low-density
environments appear on average ~2 Gyrs younger and slightly more metal-rich
than their counterparts in high density environments. No offsets in the
alpha/Fe ratios, instead, are detected. We translate the derived ages and
alpha/Fe ratios into star formation histories. We show that most star formation
activity in early-type galaxies is expected to have happened between redshifts
3 and 5 in high density and between redshifts 1 and 2 in low density
environments. We conclude that at least 50 per cent of the total stellar mass
density must have already formed at z 1, in good agreement with observational
estimates of the total stellar mass density as a function of redshift. Our
results suggest that significant mass growth in the early-type galaxy
population below z 1 must be restricted to less massive objects, and a
significant increase of the stellar mass density between redshifts 1 and 2
should be present caused mainly by the field galaxy population. The results of
this paper further imply vigorous star formation episodes in massive objects at
z 2-5 and the presence of evolved ellipticals around z 1, both observationally
identified as SCUBA galaxies and EROs.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, plus appendix, accepted by Ap
Prime Focus Spectrograph - Subaru's future -
The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) of the Subaru Measurement of Images and
Redshifts (SuMIRe) project has been endorsed by Japanese community as one of
the main future instruments of the Subaru 8.2-meter telescope at Mauna Kea,
Hawaii. This optical/near-infrared multi-fiber spectrograph targets cosmology
with galaxy surveys, Galactic archaeology, and studies of galaxy/AGN evolution.
Taking advantage of Subaru's wide field of view, which is further extended with
the recently completed Wide Field Corrector, PFS will enable us to carry out
multi-fiber spectroscopy of 2400 targets within 1.3 degree diameter. A
microlens is attached at each fiber entrance for F-ratio transformation into a
larger one so that difficulties of spectrograph design are eased. Fibers are
accurately placed onto target positions by positioners, each of which consists
of two stages of piezo-electric rotary motors, through iterations by using
back-illuminated fiber position measurements with a wide-field metrology
camera. Fibers then carry light to a set of four identical fast-Schmidt
spectrographs with three color arms each: the wavelength ranges from 0.38
{\mu}m to 1.3 {\mu}m will be simultaneously observed with an average resolving
power of 3000. Before and during the era of extremely large telescopes, PFS
will provide the unique capability of obtaining spectra of 2400
cosmological/astrophysical targets simultaneously with an 8-10 meter class
telescope. The PFS collaboration, led by IPMU, consists of USP/LNA in Brazil,
Caltech/JPL, Princeton, & JHU in USA, LAM in France, ASIAA in Taiwan, and
NAOJ/Subaru.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, submitted to "Ground-based and Airborne

Towards development of novel immunization strategies against leishmaniasis using PLGA nanoparticles loaded with kinetoplastid membrane protein-11
Background: Vaccine development has been a priority in the fight against leishmaniases, which are vector-borne diseases caused by Leishmania protozoa. Among the different immunization strategies employed to date is inoculation of plasmid DNA coding for parasite antigens, which has a demonstrated ability to induce humoral and cellular immune responses. In this sense, inoculation of plasmid DNA encoding Leishmania kinetoplasmid membrane protein-11 (KMP-11) was able to confer protection against visceral leishmaniasis. However, recently the use of antigen delivery systems such as poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles has also proven effective for eliciting protective immune responses. Methods: In the present work, we tested two immunization strategies with the goal of obtaining protection, in terms of lesion development and parasite load, against cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. braziliensis. One strategy involved immunization with plasmid DNA encoding L. infantum chagasi KMP-11. Alternatively, mice were primed with PLGA nanoparticles loaded with the recombinant plasmid DNA and boosted using PLGA nanoparticles loaded with recombinant KMP-11. Results: Both immunization strategies elicited detectable cellular immune responses with the presence of both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines; mice receiving the recombinant PLGA nanoparticle formulations also demonstrated anti-KMP-11 IgG1 and IgG2a. Mice were then challenged with L. braziliensis, in the presence of sand fly saliva. Lesion development was not inhibited following either immunization strategy. However, immunization with PLGA nanoparticles resulted in a more prominent reduction in parasite load at the infection site when compared with immunization using plasmid DNA alone. This effect was associated with a local increase in interferon-gamma and in tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Both immunization strategies also resulted in a lower parasite load in the draining lymph nodes, albeit not significantly. Conclusion: Our results encourage the pursuit of immunization strategies employing nanobased delivery systems for vaccine development against cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. braziliensis infection. © 2012 Santos et al, publisher and licensee Dove Medical Press Ltd.Government of Navarra; CAN Foundation and CYTEDPeer Reviewe
