Women’s agency in living apart together: constraint, strategy and vulnerability
Recent research suggests that women can use living apart together (LAT) for a
reflexive and strategic undoing of the gendered norms of cohabitation. In this article
we examine this assertion empirically, using a representative survey from Britain in
2011 and follow-up interviews. First, we find little gender differentiation in practices,
expectations, or attitudes about LAT, or reasons for LAT. This does not fit in with
ideas of undoing gender. Secondly, in examining how women talk about LAT in
relation to gender, we distinguish three groups of ‘constrained’, ‘strategic’ and
‘vulnerable’ female interviewees. All valued the extra space and time that LAT
could bring, many welcomed some release from traditional divisions of labour, and
some were glad to escape unpleasant situations created by partnership with men.
However, for the constrained and vulnerable groups LAT was second best, and any
relaxation of gendered norms was seen as incidental and inconsequential to their
major aim, or ideal, of the ‘proper family’ with cohabitation and marriage. Rather,
their agency in achieving this was limited by more powerful agents, or was a reaction
to perceived vulnerability. While the strategic group showed more purposeful
behaviour in avoiding male authority, agency remained relational and bonded.
Overall we find that women, at least in Britain, seldom use LAT to purposefully or
reflexively undo gender. Equally, LAT sometimes involves a reaffirmation of
gendered norms. LAT is a multi-faceted adaption to circumstances where new
autonomies can at the same time incorporate old subordinations, and new arrangements
can herald conventional family forms
Two new rapid SNP-typing methods for classifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex into the main phylogenetic lineages
There is increasing evidence that strain variation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) might influence the outcome of tuberculosis infection and disease. To assess genotype-phenotype associations, phylogenetically robust molecular markers and appropriate genotyping tools are required. Most current genotyping methods for MTBC are based on mobile or repetitive DNA elements. Because these elements are prone to convergent evolution, the corresponding genotyping techniques are suboptimal for phylogenetic studies and strain classification. By contrast, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) are ideal markers for classifying MTBC into phylogenetic lineages, as they exhibit very low degrees of homoplasy. In this study, we developed two complementary SNP-based genotyping methods to classify strains into the six main human-associated lineages of MTBC, the 'Beijing' sublineage, and the clade comprising Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae. Phylogenetically informative SNPs were obtained from 22 MTBC whole-genome sequences. The first assay, referred to as MOL-PCR, is a ligation-dependent PCR with signal detection by fluorescent microspheres and a Luminex flow cytometer, which simultaneously interrogates eight SNPs. The second assay is based on six individual TaqMan real-time PCR assays for singleplex SNP-typing. We compared MOL-PCR and TaqMan results in two panels of clinical MTBC isolates. Both methods agreed fully when assigning 36 well-characterized strains into the main phylogenetic lineages. The sensitivity in allele-calling was 98.6% and 98.8% for MOL-PCR and TaqMan, respectively. Typing of an additional panel of 78 unknown clinical isolates revealed 99.2% and 100% sensitivity in allele-calling, respectively, and 100% agreement in lineage assignment between both methods. While MOL-PCR and TaqMan are both highly sensitive and specific, MOL-PCR is ideal for classification of isolates with no previous information, whereas TaqMan is faster for confirmation. On the origin of the O and B-type stars with high velocities II Runaway stars and pulsars ejected from the nearby young stellar groups
We use milli-arcsecond accuracy astrometry (proper motions and parallaxes)
from Hipparcos and from radio observations to retrace the orbits of 56 runaway
stars and nine compact objects with distances less than 700 pc, to identify the
parent stellar group. It is possible to deduce the specific formation scenario
with near certainty for two cases. (i) We find that the runaway star zeta
Ophiuchi and the pulsar PSR J1932+1059 originated about 1 Myr ago in a
supernova explosion in a binary in the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco OB2
association. The pulsar received a kick velocity of about 350 km/s in this
event, which dissociated the binary, and gave zeta Oph its large space
velocity. (ii) Blaauw & Morgan and Gies & Bolton already postulated a common
origin for the runaway-pair AE Aur and mu Col, possibly involving the massive
highly-eccentric binary iota Ori, based on their equal and opposite velocities.
We demonstrate that these three objects indeed occupied a very small volume
\sim 2.5Myr ago, and show that they were ejected from the nascent Trapezium
cluster.
We identify the parent group for two more pulsars: both likely originate in
the 50 Myr old association Per OB3, which contains the open cluster alpha
Persei. At least 21 of the 56 runaway stars in our sample can be linked to the
nearby associations and young open clusters. These include the classical
runaways 53 Arietis (Ori OB1), xi Persei (Per OB2), and lambda Cephei (Cep
OB3), and fifteen new identifications, amongst which a pair of stars running
away in opposite directions from the region containing the lambda Ori cluster.
Other currently nearby runaways and pulsars originated beyond 700 pc, where our

Monitoring international migration flows in Europe. Towards a statistical data base combining data from different sources
The paper reviews techniques developed in demography, geography and statistics that are useful for bridging the gap between available data on international migration flows and the information required for policy making and research. The basic idea of the paper is as follows: to establish a coherent and consistent data base that contains sufficiently detailed, up-to-date and accurate information, data from several sources should be combined. That raises issues of definition and measurement, and of how to combine data from different origins properly. The issues may be tackled more easily if the statistics that are being compiled are viewed as different outcomes or manifestations of underlying stochastic processes governing migration. The link between the processes and their outcomes is described by models, the parameters of which must be estimated from the available data. That may be done within the context of socio-demographic accounting. The paper discusses the experience of the U.S. Bureau of the Census in combining migration data from several sources. It also summarizes the many efforts in Europe to establish a coherent and consistent data base on international migration.

Acting while perceiving: assimilation precedes contrast
To explore the nature of specific interactions between concurrent perception and action, participants were asked to move one of their hands in a certain direction while simultaneously observing an independent stimulus motion of a (dis)similar direction. The kinematics of the hand trajectories revealed a form of contrast effect (CE) in that the produced directions were biased away from the perceived directions (“Experiment 1”). Specifically, the endpoints of horizontal movements were lower when having watched an upward as opposed to a downward motion. However, when participants moved under higher speed constraints and were not presented with the stimulus motion prior to initiating their movements, the CE was preceded by an assimilation effect, i.e., movements were biased toward the stimulus motion directions (“Experiment 2”). These findings extend those of related studies by showing that CEs of this type actually correspond to the second phase of a bi-phasic pattern of specific perception–action interference
Understanding Galaxy Formation and Evolution
The old dream of integrating into one the study of micro and macrocosmos is
now a reality. Cosmology, astrophysics, and particle physics intersect in a
scenario (but still not a theory) of cosmic structure formation and evolution
called Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model. This scenario emerged mainly to
explain the origin of galaxies. In these lecture notes, I first present a
review of the main galaxy properties, highlighting the questions that any
theory of galaxy formation should explain. Then, the cosmological framework and
the main aspects of primordial perturbation generation and evolution are
pedagogically detached. Next, I focus on the ``dark side'' of galaxy formation,
presenting a review on LCDM halo assembling and properties, and on the main
candidates for non-baryonic dark matter. It is shown how the nature of
elemental particles can influence on the features of galaxies and their
systems. Finally, the complex processes of baryon dissipation inside the
non-linearly evolving CDM halos, formation of disks and spheroids, and
transformation of gas into stars are briefly described, remarking on the
possibility of a few driving factors and parameters able to explain the main
body of galaxy properties. A summary and a discussion of some of the issues and

Study of dielectron production in C+C collisions at 1 AGeV
The emission of e+e- pairs from C+C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV
per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities,
spanning from the pi0-Dalitz to the rho/omega! invariant-mass region, display a
strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The
bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion
production, rather than like eta production. The data are in good agreement
with results obtained in the former DLS experiment.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters
Spintronics: Fundamentals and applications
Spintronics, or spin electronics, involves the study of active control and
manipulation of spin degrees of freedom in solid-state systems. This article
reviews the current status of this subject, including both recent advances and
well-established results. The primary focus is on the basic physical principles
underlying the generation of carrier spin polarization, spin dynamics, and
spin-polarized transport in semiconductors and metals. Spin transport differs
from charge transport in that spin is a nonconserved quantity in solids due to
spin-orbit and hyperfine coupling. The authors discuss in detail spin
decoherence mechanisms in metals and semiconductors. Various theories of spin
injection and spin-polarized transport are applied to hybrid structures
relevant to spin-based devices and fundamental studies of materials properties.
Experimental work is reviewed with the emphasis on projected applications, in
which external electric and magnetic fields and illumination by light will be
used to control spin and charge dynamics to create new functionalities not

Diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas: the clinical relevance of histological subclassification
In the REAL classification the diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) are grouped together, because subclassifications are considered to lack both reproducibility and clinical significance. Others, however, claim that patients with an immunoblastic NHL have a worse prognosis than patients with other types of diffuse large B-cell NHL. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic and clinical significance of histological subclassification of diffuse large B-cell NHL in a uniformly treated series of patients. For this retrospective study, all patients diagnosed as having an immunoblastic (IB) B-cell NHL by the Lymphoma Review Panel of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCCA) between 1984 and 1994, and treated according to the guidelines of the CCCA, were analysed. Patients with a centroblastic polymorphic subtype (CB-Poly) or centroblastic (CB) NHL by the Lymphoma Review Panel who were treated in the Netherlands Cancer Institute during the same period according to CCCA guidelines were used as reference groups. All patients' records were reviewed. Clinical parameters at presentation, kind of therapy and clinical outcome were recorded. All available histological slides were separately reviewed by two haemato-pathologists. One hundred and seventy-seven patients were included in the study: 36 patients (20.3%) with an IB NHL, 69 patients (39%) with a CB-Poly NHL and 72 patients (40.7%) with a CB NHL. The patients with an IB NHL tended to be older and presented more often with stage I or II and one extranodal site than patients with a CB and CB-Poly NHL. None of the subtypes showed a clear preference for localization in a particular site. The patients with IB or CB-Poly NHL showed a significantly worse prognosis than patients with CB NHL, with a 5-year overall survival for patients with CB NHL of 56.3% and for patients with IB or CB-Poly NHL 39.1% and 41.6% respectively. The 5-year disease free survival was 53.2% for the patients with CB, 32% for the patients with CB-Poly and 26.9% for the patients with IB NHL. A multivariate analysis showed that histological subtyping was of prognostic significance independent of the International Prognostic Index. This finding merits further exploration in prospective studies in order to judge the value of subclassification of large B-cell NHL as a guideline in therapy choice. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
