Chrotopterus auritus (Peters, 1856) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae): First Record for the State of Rio Grande Do Norte, Northeastern Brazil

    Get PDF
Chrotopterus auritus is a phyllostomid bat with a wide distribution in the Neotropics. It has been recorded in Brazil’s 6 biomes but with few records in the Caatinga. We provide the first record of C. auritus for Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil, based on records from 2 caves, Três Inchu and Gruta da Carrapateira. The nearest records are ca. 400 km southeast in Ceará state and ca. 350 km northwest in Pernambuco state. Our new records fill the northeastern distributional gap of C. auritus in Brazil and South America

Effect of saline load and metoclopramide on the renal dopaminergic system in patients with heart failure and healthy controls

Dopamine of renal origin has natriuretic/diuretic actions by activating D-1-like receptors of the nephron. Saline load increases renal dopamine production and natriuresis in healthy subjects, and, under these conditions, the activation of D-2-like receptors also produces natriuresis/diuresis. Metoclopramide is a D-2-like receptor antagonist. Patients with heart failure (HF) have an increased renal dopamine-synthesizing efficiency. However, the effect of salt loading was not explored in HE We hypothesized that HF patients respond to salt loading with increased production of renal dopamine and that metoclopramide antagonizes this response. This was a randomized, controlled, crossover study exploring the effect of NaCl and metoclopramide on renal dopaminergic, sympathetic, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone, and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) systems activity on sodium handling in 9 HF patients and 9 controls. NaCl markedly increased renal dopamine production and natriuresis in both groups. Metoclopramide blunted these responses in HF patients but not in controls. NaCl decreased renin and aldosterone plasma levels in controls but not in HF patients. In these patients B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels increased, but AVP was not affected. HF patients respond to salt loading with increased natriuresis. However, the mechanisms for this response are different from those found in healthy subjects. Metoclopramide has antinatriuretic effects only in HF patients

Levantamentos rápidos como ferramenta-chave para o inventário da fauna de morcegos do Brasil: novos registros na restinga costeira

The restingas present a considerable variation in the floristic structure and composition along their latitudinal and morphoclimatic gradients. This variation may have a direct influence on the set of conditions and resources available for their biological communities, including mammals. The present study is the first to assess the bat fauna of a coastal restinga habitat in northeastern Brazil. The study site was the RPPN Caju in the municipality of Itaporanga D’Ajuda, Sergipe. We collected data on 10 consecutive days in 2014, using mist nets set at ground level, sampling a different point on each day. We captured 191 bats (16 species, 14 genera and 5 families), including the first records of Saccopteryx leptura, Molossops temminckii and Eptesicus brasiliensis for the coastal restinga. The latter two species were recorded for Sergipe for the first time. The recorded species richness is one of the highest yet recorded for Brazilian restinga. We increased the number of records of bat species in the Brazilian restinga from 38 to 41, and the number of species known to occur in Sergipe from 48 to 50. We recommend the “wandering” placement of mist nets as an effective strategy for the rapid assessment of bat communities. Keywords: Chiroptera, Eptesicus brasiliensis, Molossops temminckii, Saccopteryx leptura, Sergipe.

Factorial validity of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) in clinical samples: A critical examination of the literature and a psychometric study in anorexia nervosa

    Get PDF
There is extensive use of the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) in research and clinical practice in anorexia nervosa (AN), though it is not empirically established in this population. This study aims to examine the factorial validity of the TAS-20 in a Portuguese AN sample (N = 125), testing four different models (ranging from 1 to 4 factors) that were identified in critical examination of existing factor analytic studies. Results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggested that the three-factor solution, measuring difficulty identifying (DIF) and describing feelings (DDF), and externally oriented thinking (EOT), was the best fitting model. The quality of measurement improves if two EOT items (16 and 18) are eliminated. Internal consistency of EOT was low and decreased with age. The results provide support for the factorial validity of the TAS-20 in AN. Nevertheless, the measurement of EOT requires some caution and may be problematic in AN adolescents.Center for Psychology at the University of Porto, Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT UID/PSI/00050/2013) and EU FEDER through COMPETE 2020 program (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007294info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

An adult female was collected in the Serra de Itabaiana National Park, Sergipe State; a post-lactating female was caught in the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Sitio Pau-Brasil, Coruripe, Alagoas State; and an adult female was collected in the Reserva Biológica Guaribas, Paraiba State. These records fill a gap of approximately 800 km between previously known localities of the species

Filling gaps in the distribution of the white-winged vampire bat, Diaemus youngii (Phyllostomidae, Desmodontinae): new records for southern Amazonia

ABSTRACT Bats of the subfamily Desmodontinae are the only hematophagous mammals, represented by three species. Among them, Diaemus youngii has the fewest records in Brazil, being poorly known demographically and ecologically. We report the first record of D. youngii for Mato Grosso state, in central-western Brazil, and provide additional records for the states of Rondônia and Tocantins, in northern Brazil, extending the known distribution of D. youngii in the southern Amazon region.
</div
