    Inconsistency, paraconsistency and ω-inconsistency

    In this paper I'll explore the relation between ω-inconsistency and plain inconsistency, in the context of theories that intend to capture semantic concepts. In particular, I'll focus on two very well known inconsistent but non-trivial theories of truth: LP and STTT. Both have the interesting feature of being able to handle semantic and arithmetic concepts, maintaining the standard model. However, it can be easily shown that both theories are ω-inconsistent. Although usually a theory of truth is generally expected to be ω-consistent, all conceptual concerns don't apply to inconsistent theories. Finally, I'll explore if it's possible to have an inconsistent, but ω-consistent theory of truth, restricting my analysis to substructural theories.Fil: Da Re, Bruno.     Theories of truth based on four-valued infectious logics

    Infectious logics are systems that have a truth-value that is assigned to a compound formula whenever it is assigned to one of its components. This paper studies four-valued infectious logics as the basis of transparent theories of truth. This take is motivated as a way to treat different pathological sentences differently, namely, by allowing some of them to be truth-value gluts and some others to be truth-value gaps and as a way to treat the semantic pathology suffered by at least some of these sentences as infectious. This leads us to consider four distinct four-valued logics: one where truth-value gaps are infectious, but gluts are not; one where truth-value gluts are infectious, but gaps are not; and two logics where both gluts and gaps are infectious, in some sense. Additionally, we focus on the proof theory of these systems, by offering a discussion of two related topics. On the one hand, we prove some limitations regarding the possibility of providing standard Gentzen sequent calculi for these systems, by dualizing and extending some recent results for infectious logics. On the other hand, we provide sound and complete four-sided sequent calculi, arguing that the most important technical and philosophical features taken into account to usually prefer standard calculi are, indeed, enjoyed by the four-sided systems

    The paper is concerned with Fanciullacci’s book about a new understanding of moral philosophy, described, following Aristotle, as philosophy of human experience. The author argues that such a perspective should underline two important elements: the so called double reflexivity and the education of self. Using the expression double reflexivity, the goal is to draw attention to the reflexivity of both the practical reason (phronesis) of the subject and the critical investigation of practical philosophy. It is also assumed that we can educate ourselves through the development of stable character traits (virtues and vices)

    The most recent theories on innovation point out the role of social networks, demonstrating how knowledge is intertwined with network communities and social capital represents an essential factor to comprehend innovation. The social network dimension of the innovation process is also acknowledged in the actual definition of an agricultural innovation system (AIS). This study attempts to assess the role played by social capital in agricultural innovation projects co-financed by the Measure 124 of the Rural Development Program (2007-2013) of the Umbria Region (Italy), based on the analysis of 5 evaluation criteria (relevance, innovation, effectiveness, sustainability, and social capital) in relation to 8 selected projects. The obtained results confirm the validity of the proposed methodology both for the purpose of internal monitoring of the project and for the assessment of the measure on the basis of tangible and intangible factors, such as social capital

    Temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation and sulphide levels fluctuated widely both seasonally and with depth at a station on the upper Derwent estuary just downstream from a pulp and paper mill. In summer (February) oxygen saturation at the bottom reached a minimum of about 20% and sulphide levels peaked at 11 mg L- Conditions at this time would be expected to be lethal to a wide variety of organisms. Some of the possible causes for these changes are discussed

    Prognostic factors of survival in patients treated with nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine regimen for advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer: A single institutional experience.

    The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (NAB-P/GEM) regimen in an unselected population of patients with advanced inoperable or metastatic pancreatic cancer (PC), and to identify the prognostic factors influencing overall survival (OS). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Patients with age < 85 years, ECOG-performance status (PS) < 3, and adequate renal, hepatic and hematologic function were eligible. NAB-P (125 mg/m2) and GEM (1000 mg/m2) day 1,8,15 every 4 weeks were employed for 3-6 cycles or until highest response. RESULTS: Overall, 147 cycles (median 4, range 1-11 cycles) were administered on thirty-seven consecutive patients (median 66 years old, range 40-82) treated. The median overall progression-free survival and OS were 6.2 and 9.2 months, respectively. The G 3-4 dose-limiting toxicity were neutropenia (20.7%), severe anemia (17.2%), and cardiovascular toxicity (10.3%). PS, number of cycles, baseline CA 19-9 and LDH serum levels, were found to be significantly related to OS. The multivariate analysis showed that both number of cycles (HR = 9.14, 95% CI 1.84-45.50, p = 0.001) and PS (HR = 13.18, 95% CI 2.73-63.71, p = 0.001) were independently associated with OS. CONCLUSION: NAB-P/GEM regimen should be used in all patients with advanced or metastatic PC, with the exception of those with serious contraindications to chemotherapy, such as severe renal or hepatic impairment or major cardiovascular diseases

    Normal fault growth in continental rifting: insights from changes in displacement and length fault populations due to increasing extension in the Central Kenya Rift

    This study examines the scaling relationship between fault length and displacement for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of the evolution of normal faults within the central Kenya Rift. 620 normal faults were manually mapped from a digital elevation model (DEM), with 30 m2 resolution and an estimated maximum displacement of ~40–~6030 m and fault lengths of 1270 ‐ 60,600 m. To assess the contribution of fault populations to the strain accommodation from south to north, the study area has been divided into three zones of fault populations based upon their average fault orientations; zone 1 in the north is dominated by NNE striking faults, zone 2 in the centre of the rift is characterised by NNW to NNE fault trends, whereas zone 3 in the south is characterised by NNW striking fault systems. Extensional strain was estimated by summing fault heaves across six transects along the rift, which showed a progressive increase of strain from south to north. The fault length and displacement data in the three zones fit to a power law distribution. The cumulative distributions of fault length populations showed similar fractal dimension (D) in the three zones. The cumulative displacement distributions for the three zones showed a decrease in the Power-law fractal dimension with increasing strain, which implies that the strain is increasingly localized onto larger faults as the fault system becomes more evolved from south to north. Increasing displacement with increasing strain while the fault length remains almost constant may indicate that the fault system could be evolving in accordance with a constant length fault growth model, where faults lengthen quickly and then accrue displacement. Results of this study suggest that the process of progressively increasing fault system maturity and strain localization onto large faults can be observed even over a relatively small area (240 × 150 km) within the rift system. It is also suggested that patterns of fault growth can be deduced from the fractal dimension of cumulative distribution of fault size populations

    MEMS UNDERWATER DIRECTION FINDING ACOUSTIC SENSOR

    Acoustic sensors operating in underwater environments were designed and fabricated based on the ear structure of the parasitic fly, Ormia ochracea. The design was executed using COMSOL Multiphysics, including mass loading and viscous damping. The optimized sensors were fabricated using MEMSCAP commercial foundry service. The testing was performed using NPS water tanks and TRANSDEC’s San Diego underwater testing facility. For underwater characterization, a custom housing was made to immerse the sensors in a non-conducting fluid with acoustic impedance close to water. Measurements showed that the sensors could detect underwater sound with a narrow-band spectral response. Directional response of the sensors showed the expected cosine dependence, indicating their ability to detect the bearing of underwater sound sources. The sensor enclosure affected the measurements due to its non-uniform response to the incident sound. A reference hydrophone was similarly enclosed and COMSOL simulations performed to reduce and understand this effect. The results show that the enclosure produces unwanted resonance frequencies. For uniquely determining sound-source bearing, it is necessary to use two sensors at a canted angle. The circuit boards affected directional responses. COMSOL simulations were performed with actual-sized circuit boards.
