A new species of the genus Chrysina Kirby, 1828 is decribed from Panama. Chrysina kalinini sp.n. is related to Chrysina resplendens (Boucard, 1875) in habitus, male genitalia morphology and mtDNA COX I molecular marker). The two closely related species differ in the shape of pronotum, mesosternal process and male genitalia. mtDNA COI molecular marker analysis gives a reliable distance for the compared species

Technical Note: Chemistry-climate model SOCOL: version 2.0 with improved transport and chemistry/microphysics schemes

    Get PDF
International audienceWe describe version 2.0 of the chemistry-climate model (CCM) SOCOL. The new version includes fundamental changes of the transport scheme such as transporting all chemical species of the model individually and applying a family-based correction scheme for mass conservation for species of the nitrogen, chlorine and bromine groups, a revised transport scheme for ozone, furthermore more detailed halogen reaction and deposition schemes, and a new cirrus parameterisation in the tropical tropopause region. By means of these changes the model manages to overcome or considerably reduce deficiencies recently identified in SOCOL version 1.1 within the CCM Validation activity of SPARC (CCMVal). In particular, as a consequence of these changes, regional mass loss or accumulation artificially caused by the semi-Lagrangian transport scheme can be significantly reduced, leading to much more realistic distributions of the modelled chemical species, most notably of the halogens and ozone

Quantum phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in highly anisotropic magnets

The systems exhibiting quantum phase transitions (QPT) are investigated within the Ising model in the transverse field and Heisenberg model with easy-plane single-site anisotropy. Near QPT a correspondence between parameters of these models and of quantum phi^4 model is established. A scaling analysis is performed for the ground-state properties. The influence of the external longitudinal magnetic field on the ground-state properties is investigated, and the corresponding magnetic susceptibility is calculated. Finite-temperature properties are considered with the use of the scaling analysis for the effective classical model proposed by Sachdev. Analytical results for the ordering temperature and temperature dependences of the magnetization and energy gap are obtained in the case of a small ground-state moment. The forms of dependences of observable quantities on the bare splitting (or magnetic field) and renormalized splitting turn out to be different. A comparison with numerical calculations and experimental data on systems demonstrating magnetic and structural transitions (e.g., into singlet state) is performed.Comment: 46 pages, RevTeX, 6 figure

On the interplay between Babai and Černý’s conjectures

Motivated by the Babai conjecture and the Černý conjecture, we study the reset thresholds of automata with the transition monoid equal to the full monoid of transformations of the state set. For automata with n states in this class, we prove that the reset thresholds are upperbounded by 2n2 -6n + 5 and can attain the value (Formula presented). In addition, we study diameters of the pair digraphs of permutation automata and construct n-state permutation automata with diameter (formula presented). © Springer International Publishing AG 2017

Reliable Correlation for Liquid–Liquid Equilibria outside the Critical Region

    Get PDF
A simple model for binary liquid–liquid equilibrium data correlation is explored. The model describes liquid–liquid equilibrium in terms of Henry’s law and unsymmetrically normalized activity coefficients in each phase. A procedure for parameter estimation including an approach to initial guesses, uncertainty analysis of regression results, obtained parameters, and predicted mole fractions has been formulated. The procedure is applied to three cases: hydrocarbons + water, ionic liquids + water, and nitroethane + hydrocarbons. The model has four parameters in the most basic formulation. Depending upon the available data, this number can be extended in a systematic fashion. We compare results of correlation to results obtained with a four-parameter nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) equation and COSMO-SAC. In general, the new model does nearly as well as NRTL. Advantages of the presented model are a simple form and a parameter set that can be extended in a systematic fashion with an interpretation in terms of thermodynamic properties. The model may be developed further for validation of experimental data

Diurnal changes in middle atmospheric H2O and O3: Observations in the Alpine region and climate models

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper we investigate daily variations in middle atmospheric water vapor and ozone based on data from two ground-based microwave radiometers located in the Alpine region of Europe. Temperature data are obtained from a lidar located near the two stations and from the SABER experiment on the TIMED satellite. This unique set of observations is complemented by three different three-dimensional (3-D) chemistry-climate models (Monitoring of Stratospheric Depletion of the Ozone Layer (MSDOL), Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique Reactive Processes Ruling the Ozone Budget in the Stratosphere (LMDz-REPROBUS), and Solar Climate Ozone Links (SOCOL)) and the 2-D atmospheric global-scale wave model (GSWM). The first part of the paper is focused on the first Climate and Weather of the Sun-Earth System (CAWSES) tidal campaign that consisted of a period of intensive measurements during September 2005. Variations in stratospheric water vapor are found to be in the order of 1% depending on altitude. Meridional advection of tidal nature is likely to be the dominant driving factor throughout the whole stratosphere, while vertical advection becomes more important in the mesosphere. Observed ozone variations in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere show amplitudes of several percent in accordance with photochemical models. Variations in lower stratospheric ozone are not solely governed by photochemistry but also by dynamics, with the temperature dependence of the photochemistry becoming more important. The second part presents an investigation of the seasonal dependence of daily variations. Models tend to underestimate the H2O diurnal amplitudes, especially during summer in the upper stratosphere. Good agreement between models and observations is found for ozone in the upper stratosphere, which reflects the fact that the O3 daily variations are driven by the photochemistry that is well modeled

A novel physics informed deep learning method for simulation-based modelling

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a brief review of the state of the art physics informed deep learning methodology and examine its applicability, limits, advantages, and disadvantages via several applications. The main advantage of this method is that it can predict the solution of the partial differential equations by using only boundary and initial conditions without the need for any training data or pre-process phase. Using physics informed neural network algorithms, it is possible to solve partial differential equations in many different problems encountered in engineering studies with a low cost and time instead of traditional numerical methodologies. A direct comparison between the initial results of the current model, analytical solutions, and computational fluid dynamics methods shows very good agreement. The proposed methodology provides a crucial basis for solution of more advance partial differential equation systems and offers a new analysis and mathematical modelling tool for aerospace application
