Promiscuous mating in feral pigs (\u3ci\u3eSus scrofa\u3c/i\u3e) from Texas, USA
Context. Feral pigs represent a significant threat to agriculture and ecosystems and are disease reservoirs for pathogens affecting humans, livestock and other wildlife. Information on the behavioural ecology of feral pigs might increase the efficiency and effectiveness of management strategies.
Aims. We assessed the frequency of promiscuous mating in relation to oestrous synchrony in feral pigs from southern Texas, USA, an agroecosystem with a widespread and well established population of feral pigs. An association between multiple paternity of single litters and synchrony of oestrous may indicate alternative mating strategies, such as mateguarding.
Methods. We collected gravid sows at nine sites in southern Texas during 2005â07. We used a panel of DNA microsatellite markers to estimate frequency of multiple paternity and the distribution of male mating among litters of feral pigs. Conception dates were determined by fitting average fetal crownârump measurements within litters to expected fetal development relative to gestation time.
Key results. We found evidence of multiple paternity in 21 of 64 litters (33%) from seven of nine sites sampled. Synchrony of oestrous did not influence promiscuous mating, as we found multiple paternity at sites with synchronous and asynchronous oestrous. Males sired from 8 to 11 offspring at three sites where \u3e10 litters were sampled. Mean litter size (5.4) was less than the best-fit value for the number of offspring, indicating that some males sired offspring with â„2 females.
Key conclusions. Feral pigs in Texas appear to be promiscuous under a range of demographic conditions, unlike wild boar and feral pigs in other regions. The ecological and behavioural factors affecting multiple paternity are not clear, but may include maleâmale competition, harassment avoidance, genetic benefits for offspring, response to macro-habitat conditions, or selection.
Implications. A high incidence of sexual contact among individuals may increase the opportunity for diseases transmitted by oral or venereal routes, such as swine brucellosis and pseudorabies. In addition, fertility-control methods targeting males only are likely to be inefficient if female promiscuity is high; methods targeting females or both sexes jointly may be more effective

A Wormhole at the core of an infinite cosmic string
We study a solution of Einstein's equations that describes a straight cosmic
string with a variable angular deficit, starting with a deficit at the
core. We show that the coordinate singularity associated to this defect can be
interpreted as a traversible wormhole lodging at the the core of the string. A
negative energy density gradually decreases the angular deficit as the distance
from the core increases, ending, at radial infinity, in a Minkowski spacetime.
The negative energy density can be confined to a small transversal section of
the string by gluing to it an exterior Gott's like solution, that freezes the
angular deficit existing at the matching border. The equation of state of the
string is such that any massive particle may stay at rest anywhere in this

Genetic Structure and Diversity in South Texas Bobwhites: Implications for Conservation
The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has experienced range-wide declines in population size and reductions in geographic range during the last century. Declines in northern bobwhite population size and geographic distribution continue to occur despite vigorous conservation and research efforts directed at sustaining and enhancing populations. Viable populations of northern bobwhite have persisted only in areas with large expanses of relatively contiguous habitat, such as southern Texas, parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and areas in southern Georgia and northern Florida. The decline of northern bobwhite populations is often associated with changes in land- use practices, including proliferation of intensive agriculture and fire suppression, which have altered, removed, or fragmented northern bobwhite habitat. Typically, the effects of changes in land use on northern bobwhites are regional in scale, given the large geographic extent which current agricultural land-use practices, such as farming and timber production, occur. It is clear that precipitation and land use affect regional population trends, but consideration of northern bobwhite population dynamics has remained confined to the local scale. Thus, the specific manner in which land-use changes have affected populations of northern bobwhites is unknown. We investigated the genetics and population structure of northern bobwhites at the landscape scale to learn if bobwhites function as metapopulations. Dispersal and exchange in a metapopulation system are critical to the long-term maintenance of populations; if interrupted, the entire network of populations might collapse. We sampled hunter-harvested northern bobwhites during 2004 to 2007 from 24 sites in South Texas, a region containing large areas of contiguous habitat where populations of northern bobwhites have been relatively stable. We extracted DNA and used bi-parentally and maternally inherited genetic markers to compare genetic structure and diversity among populations. We genotyped 567 individuals at 7 DNA microsatellite loci and sequenced 353 bp of the mtDNA control region for 190 individuals. Genetic diversity was high for microsatellite loci and mtDNA haplotypes (HO 1â4 0.58; H 1â4 0.88, respectively), and did not differ among populations. We observed little population structure across the geographic region (microsatellite FST 1â4 0.01; mtDNA theta 1â4 0.037), and Fisher exact tests of population differentiation were not statistically significant. Spatial autocorrelation analysis of the microsatellite data set revealed a positive correlation between Moranâs I and geographic distance out to .50 km. Our genetic data are surprising for an avian species that is considered relatively sedentary and a short-distance disperser. South Texas populations of northern bobwhites had high levels of genetic variation and were genetically similar across a broad region. Population genetics theory predicts that genetic diversity and similarity among local populations in a metapopulation are influenced by the rate of dispersal (gene flow). Life history theory predicts species with high turnover rates, such as northern bobwhite, should be good dispersers. The region-wide genetic similarity among populations of northern bobwhites implies dispersal may be more important in the population dynamics of the species than previous studies have indicated. We hypothesize that disruption of dispersal by habitat fragmentation may explain the overall decline of northern bobwhite populations in some regions. This may explain why patches of suitable habitat in fragmented landscapes go unoccupied by northern bobwhites. Our results lend additional support to recent calls for regional-scale management of this declining species
Numerical stability of a family of Osipkov-Merrit models
We have investigated the stability of a set of non-rotating anisotropic
spherical models with a phase-space distribution function of the
Osipkov-Merritt type. The velocity distribution in these models is isotropic
near the center and becomes radially anisotropic at large radii. They are
special members of the family studied by Dehnen and Tremaine et al. where the
mass density has a power-law cusp at small radii and
decays as at large radii. The radial-orbit instability of
models with = 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2, was studied using an N-body code
written by one of us and based on the `self-consistent field' method developed
by Hernquist and Ostriker. These simulations have allowed us to delineate a
boundary in the -plane that separates the stable from the
unstable models. This boundary is given by , for
the ratio of the total radial to tangential kinetic energy. We also found that
the stability criterion , recently raised by Hjorth, gives lower

The optical emission line spectrum of Mark 110
We analyse in detail the rich emission line spectrum of Mark 110 to determine
the physical conditions in the nucleus of this object, a peculiar NLS1 without
any detectable Fe II emission associated with the broad line region and with a
line ratio unusually large for a NLS1. We use 24 spectra
obtained with the Marcario Low Resolution Spectrograph attached at the prime
focus of the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly telescope at the McDonald observatory. We
fitted the spectrum by identifying all the emission lines (about 220) detected
in the wavelength range 4200-6900 \AA (at rest). The narrow emission lines are
probably produced in a region with a density gradient in the range
10 cm with a rather high column density (5
cm). In addition to a narrow line system, three major broad line systems
with different line velocity and width are required. We confirm the absence of
broad Fe II emission lines. We speculate that Mark 110 is in fact a BLS1 with
relatively "narrow" broad lines but with a BH mass large enough compared to its

Structure of the Galaxies in the NGC 80 Group
BV-bands photometric data obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special
Astrophysical Observatory are used to analyze the structure of 13 large disk
galaxies in the NGC 80 group. Nine of the 13 galaxies under consideration are
classified by us as lenticular galaxies. The stellar populations in the
galaxies are very different, from old ones with ages of T>10 Gyrs (IC 1541) to
relatively young, with the ages of T<2-3 Gyr (IC 1548, NGC 85). In one case,
current star formation is known (UCM 0018+2216). In most of the galaxies, more
precisely in all of them more luminous than M(B) -18, two-tiered
(`antitruncated') stellar disks are detected, whose radial surface brightness
profiles can be fitted by two exponential segments with different scalelengths
-- shorter near the center and longer at the periphery. All dwarf S0 galaxies
with single-scalelength exponential disks are close companions to giant
galaxies. Except for this fact, no dependence of the properties of S0 galaxies
on distance from the center of the group is found. Morphological traces of
minor merger are found in the lenticular galaxy NGC 85. Basing on the last two
points, we conclude that the most probable mechanisms for the transformation of
spirals into lenticular galaxies in groups are gravitational ones, namely,

Ozone depletion in the Arctic and Antarctic stratosphere induced by wildfire smoke
A record-breaking stratospheric ozone loss was observed over the Arctic and Antarctica in 2020. Strong ozone depletion occurred over Antarctica in 2021 as well. The ozone holes developed in smoke-polluted air. In this article, the impact of Siberian and Australian wildfire smoke (dominated by organic aerosol) on the extraordinarily strong ozone reduction is discussed. The study is based on aerosol lidar observations in the North Pole region (October 2019-May 2020) and over Punta Arenas in southern Chile at 53.2°S (January 2020-November 2021) as well as on respective NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) ozone profile observations in the Arctic (Ny-Ă
lesund) and Antarctica (Neumayer and South Pole stations) in 2020 and 2021. We present a conceptual approach on how the smoke may have influenced the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), which are of key importance in the ozone-depleting processes. The main results are as follows: (a) the direct impact of wildfire smoke below the PSC height range (at 10-12 km) on ozone reduction seems to be similar to well-known volcanic sulfate aerosol effects. At heights of 10-12 km, smoke particle surface area (SA) concentrations of 5-7 Όm2 cm-3 (Antarctica, spring 2021) and 6-10 Όm2 cm-3 (Arctic, spring 2020) were correlated with an ozone reduction in terms of ozone partial pressure of 0.4-1.2 mPa (about 30 % further ozone reduction over Antarctica) and of 2-3.5 mPa (Arctic, 20 %-30 % reduction with respect to the long-term springtime mean). (b) Within the PSC height range, we found indications that smoke was able to slightly increase the PSC particle number and surface area concentration. In particular, a smoke-related additional ozone loss of 1-2 mPa (10 %-20 % contribution to the total ozone loss over Antarctica) was observed in the 14-23 km PSC height range in September-October 2020 and 2021. Smoke particle number concentrations ranged from 10 to 100 cm-3 and were about a factor of 10 (in 2020) and 5 (in 2021) above the stratospheric aerosol background level. Satellite observations indicated an additional mean column ozone loss (deviation from the long-term mean) of 26-30 Dobson units (9 %-10 %, September 2020, 2021) and 52-57 Dobson units (17 %-20 %, October 2020, 2021) in the smoke-polluted latitudinal Antarctic belt from 70-80°S. Domain Wall Spacetimes: Instability of Cosmological Event and Cauchy Horizons
The stability of cosmological event and Cauchy horizons of spacetimes
associated with plane symmetric domain walls are studied. It is found that both
horizons are not stable against perturbations of null fluids and massless
scalar fields; they are turned into curvature singularities. These
singularities are light-like and strong in the sense that both the tidal forces
and distortions acting on test particles become unbounded when theses
