Pushing the limits of V2: new syntactic options in a Danish urban dialect

Studies of urban dialects in the Germanic languages show a development where the otherwise strict V2 syntax rules are supplemented with V3 syntax in specific syntactic and social contexts. Based on recordings of naturally occurring interaction in multilingual areas of Aarhus, Denmark, this paper adds to existing research with an interactional collection analysis of actions supporting V3. It describes six structural subtypes of V3 characterised by different adverbial and object material in first position and shows how the subtypes are connected to three interactional resources used in organising storytelling, claiming epistemic authority and reframing referents or discourse. V3 is often used when contrasting one type of information with another. It does not result in a different semantic meaning, rather it existing possible meanings that could also be emphasised by extra wording or multiple sentences. In the discussion, I argue that the extra syntactic options allow speakers to say more with fewer words by pushing the limits of the rather strict V2 syntax of Standard Danish

Vitamin A consumption in pregnancy and risk of offspring type 1 diabetes

Background and aim: Vitamin A have been shown to influence immunity, and animal studies have shown that maternal vitamin A intake could have immunomodulatory effects that may influence offspring type 1 diabetes (T1D) development. There are few human studies that have investigated the association between vitamin A consumption and T1D. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal vitamin A intake during pregnancy and the risk of childhood T1D in the Norwegian, Mother, Father and Child Cohort study (MoBa). Methods: This study includes 82,605 children born between 2000 and 2009. Children were followed to April 15, 2018. T1D diagnosis was obtained from the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Registry (NCDR). Maternal vitamin A intake was estimated through a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and divided into quintiles and as well as modeled as a continuous exposure measure (per 100 retinol equivalents, RE/day). Hazard ratios (HR) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression, with adjustment for the maternal factors: T1D, pre-pregnant body mass index, smoking, vitamin D intake, education level, and age at delivery. Further analysis was performed to examine if vitamin A from supplements and food sources separately, as well as vitamin A intake below or above the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNRs), was associated with risk of offspring T1D. Results: During a mean follow-up time of 12.2 years, 345 children developed T1D. The mean intake was 1,665 RE/day. Compared to the mid-quantile, the lowest fifth of total vitamin A intake (HR=1.17, 95% Cl: 0.83, 1.67) and highest fifth (HR=1.11, 95% Cl: 0.78, 1.59) was not statistically significant associated with the risk of offspring T1D. Total vitamin A was not log-linearly associated with T1D (HR per 100 RE/day: 1.00, 95% Cl: 0.99, 1.01). Intake below (HR=1.17, 95% Cl: 0.84, 1.62) or above (HR=1.11, 95% Cl: 0.73, 1.68) the NNRs daily recommended intake (DRI) was not associated with offspring T1D. Conclusion: Results in this large prospective cohort suggests no overall association between vitamin A consumption in pregnancy and the risk of offspring T1D

Factors influencing environmentally responsible investment in the forestry sector: A qualitative examination of Green Resources investment projects in Mozambique.

In today's world, striking a balance between economic growth and environmental protection has become a critical challenge for organizations. The United Nations has emphasized the urgent need to address climate change, a threat that poses significant risks to both humanity and the planet. Despite the ambitious targets set for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, current national commitments are insufficient, demanding effective action at all levels to tackle this crisis. Sustainable forestry initiatives have been recognized as crucial for mitigating and adapting to climate change, although concerns have been raised about potential adverse environmental impacts of large-scale forestation efforts. This master's thesis delves into the decision-making processes of corporations and investors, examining how they prioritize environmental responsibility. With a specific focus on Green Resources (GR), a forestry company, the research employs a qualitative methodology to explore the motivations, obstacles, and criteria for investing in the forestry sector in an environmentally responsible manner. The study employs a variety of sources, including interviews, literature, reports, official documents, business reports, and websites, to provide a comprehensive analysis of the intricate nature of environmentally responsible investing, using GR's operations in Mozambique as a case study

Vendor Managed Inventory: why you need to talk to your supplier

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) from an inter-organisational perspective. Extant literature on VMI tends to investigate the concept from a focal perspective, even though VMI has originally been born as a collaborative arrangement. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a literature review and an empirical study. It provides a comprehensive literature review on VMI and an illustrative case study of a supplier and a buyer jointly implementing VMI. Findings The findings of this paper are twofold. First, a literature review uncovers that contemporary research has delimited the analysis of VMI to a focal company perspective as current VMI cost models tend not to capture the picture of the complete supply chain. Second, it demonstrates through an illustrative case study that adoption of an inter-organisational approach to VMI is vital if companies are to optimize their buyer-supplier relationships. Research limitations/implications Future research should test the implications proposed in the empirical section, as this piece of research can be seen as exploratory case study research with the aim of analytical generalizations. Practical implications The inter-organisational VMI cost perspective in supply chains should be emphasized in purchasing departments since such a perspective significantly raises the awareness of the costs incurred in a supply chain. Originality/value Existing research has not explicitly focused on inter-organisational costs incurred by companies implementing VMI. This study seeks to bridge this research gapPeer Reviewe

The costs of poor data quality

    Get PDF
Purpose: The technological developments have implied that companies store increasingly more data. However, data quality maintenance work is often neglected, and poor quality business data constitute a significant cost factor for many companies. This paper argues that perfect data quality should not be the goal, but instead the data quality should be improved to only a certain level. The paper focuses on how to identify the optimal data quality level. Design/methodology/approach: The paper starts with a review of data quality literature. On this basis, the paper proposes a definition of the optimal data maintenance effort and a classification of costs inflicted by poor quality data. These propositions are investigated by a case study. Findings: The paper proposes: (1) a definition of the optimal data maintenance effort and (2) a classification of costs inflicted by poor quality data. A case study illustrates the usefulness of these propositions. Research limitations/implications: The paper provides definitions in relation to the costs of poor quality data and the data quality maintenance effort. Future research may build on these definitions. To further develop the contributions of the paper, more studies are needed. Practical implications: As illustrated by the case study, the definitions provided by this paper can be used for determining the right data maintenance effort and costs inflicted by poor quality data. In many companies, such insights may lead to significant savings. Originality/value: The paper provides a clarification of what are the costs of poor quality data and defines the relation to data quality maintenance effort. This represents an original contribution of value to future research and practice.Peer Reviewe
