    Get PDF
LoRa is a long-range, low power and single-hop wireless technology that has been envisioned for Internet of Things (IoT) applications having battery driven nodes. Nevertheless, increase in number of end devices and varying throughput requirements impair the performance of pure Aloha in LoRaWAN. Considering these limitations, we evaluate the performance of slotted Aloha in LoRaWAN using extensive simulations. We employed packet error rate (PER), throughput, delay, and energy consumption of devices under different payload sizes and varying number of end devices as benchmarks. Moreover, an analytical analysis of backlogged and non-backlogged under slotted Aloha LoRaWAN environment is also performed. The simulation shows promising results in terms of PER and throughput compared to the pure Aloha. However, increase in delay has been observed during experimental evaluation. Finally, we endorse slotted aloha LoRaWAN for Green IoT Environment

McDonalds Pakistan: Food and Fun Together

    Get PDF
McDonalds is a leading fast food chain that revolutionized the food industry in the world. In 1980s, many companies expanded into international operations through franchise mode of business. Though these companies wanted to stick to their original knitting, they had to attune themselves to regional preferences. McDonalds’ operations in Pakistan are no different to this theory, but they negated the traditional marketing philosophy of “rule of cumulative attraction “by locating their outlets where their customer segment is in dense concentration.McDonalds defied the “rule of cumulative attraction” and “affluent segment being the trend-setters” by initially locating their outlets in Gulberg, Lahore and Nazimabad, Karachi instead of “Boating basin” where most restaurants were located. Middle class and working classes in Pakistan mostly live in Gulburge and Nazimabad. Fast-food industry thrives on footfall of customers and high volume sales at low prices instead of premium pricing trategies. The very spirit of McDonalds would have been distorted if the general perception amongst the target market had been that “McDonalds is for the rich”. In 1998, Boating basin a seaside locality near Clifton, Karachi had turned into a food street and all eating outlets opened withinthis vicinity being more averse risk project, Pizza Hut launched its outlet in Boating basin, Karachi in 1993.Though McDonalds is popular, yet there are many challenges before them. In spite of their popularity, the different chains are not able to bring much change in their product range and service conditions. Environmental changes like healthier food preferences, depressive income levels and variety seeking cuisine requirements dictate that innovative and nutritional value added products should replace the traditional products. Keywords: McDonalds Pakistan, Lakson Group of Company, Mission, Fast food Restaurant, Franchise, Burger market

Objective: Cervical spondylosis is a common degenerative condition leading to compression of nerve roots or spinal cord, causing radiculopathy or myelopathy. Anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) techniques are commonly recognized procedures in treating axial cervical spine pain and upper extremity radicular discomfort. The study analyzed the surgical outcome of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and radiculopathy patients in terms of pain improvement. Material and Methods: This descriptive case series analysis was performed at the Neuro Surgery department, Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. A total of 146 patients between age 18 – 65 years meeting the inclusion criteria underwent anterior decompression &post-procedure improvement in pain of neck and arm/shoulder was determined using patient reported outcome (PRO) measure, namely visual analog scale (VAS) of 0-10 and a final outcome that is an improvement of pain, i.e., Mild to no pain (VAS score ≤3) was considered after 12 months. Results: The mean age was 52 years ± 8.273. As regards gender distribution, 78% of patients were male, while 22% were female. The mean baseline VAS score was 6.5 ± 2.37, mean postoperative VAS score was 3.5 ± 1.161 with a mean point improvement in pain of 3.0 points (p-value < 0.05). 80% of patients had shown improvement in reducing pain, while 20% did not have shown any improvement. Conclusion: This study revealed that independent of symptoms duration and presentation, patients reported dramatic improvements in neck and arm pain after ACDF

Genetic Analysis of Triple Pistil Wheat Derived F2 Populations to Enhance Genetic Yield Potential

    Get PDF
Triple pistil (TP) wheat is a novel genetic resource which holds the ability to produce three grains in a single floret. In this research, TP wheat derived two F2 populations were studied to investigate genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, genetic correlation, inheritance pattern and potential of TP trait for grain yield improvement. Phenological data were recorded for 12 morpho-agronomic traits. Most of the traits exhibited significant genetic variability (P ? 0.05) for further trait improvement. Strong positive genetic correlations (r ? 0.99 at P ? 0.01) were computed within yield contributing and yield limiting traits, indicating common genes controlling these traits and opportunity for simultaneous improvement. Inheritance analysis indicated double dominant (15:1) and double recessive (9:7) epistatic ratios in investigated populations, proposing that TP trait was controlled by two nuclear epistatic genes. In conclusion, TP wheat is a valuable germplasm resource for grain yield improvement and floral development studies

An Internet of Things Based Bed-Egress Alerting Paradigm Using Wearable Sensors in Elderly Care Environment

    Get PDF
The lack of healthcare staff and increasing proportions of elderly population is alarming. The traditional means to look after elderly has resulted in 255,000 reported falls (only within UK). This not only resulted in extensive aftercare needs and surgeries (summing up to £4.4 billion) but also in added suffering and increased mortality. In such circumstances, the technology can greatly assist by offering automated solutions for the problem at hand. The proposed work offers an Internet of things (IoT) based patient bed-exit monitoring system in clinical settings, capable of generating a timely response to alert the healthcare workers and elderly by analyzing the wireless data streams, acquired through wearable sensors. This work analyzes two different datasets obtained from divergent families of sensing technologies, i.e., smartphone-based accelerometer and radio frequency identification (RFID) based accelerometer. The findings of the proposed system show good efficacy in monitoring the bed-exit and discriminate other ambulating activities. Furthermore, the proposed work manages to keep the average end-to-end system delay (i.e., communications of sensed data to Data Sink (DS)/Control Center (CC) + machine-based feature extraction and class identification + feedback communications to a relevant healthcare worker/elderly) below 1 10 th of a second
