Resonant Tunnelling Optoelectronic Circuits
Nowadays, most communication networks such as local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs) have replaced or are about to replace coaxial cable or twisted copper wire with fiber optical cables. Light-wave communication systems comprise a transmitter based on a visible or near-infrared light source, whose carrier is modulated by the information signal to be transmitted, a transmission media such as an optical fiber, eventually utilizing in-line optical amplification, and a receiver based on a photo-detector that recovers the information signal (Liu, 1996)(Einarsson, 1996). The transmitter consists of a driver circuit along a semiconductor laser or a light emitting diode (LED). The receiver is a signal processing circuit coupled to a photo-detector such as a photodiode, an avalanche photodiode (APD), a phototransistor or a high speed photoconductor that processes the photo-detected signal and recovers the primitive information signa
Patterns of Interactions in Complex Social Networks Based on Coloured Motifs Analysis
Coloured network motifs are small subgraphs that enable to discover and interpret the patterns of interaction within the complex networks. The analysis of three-nodes motifs where the colour of the node reflects its high – white node or low – black node centrality in the social network is presented in the paper. The importance of the vertices is assessed by utilizing two measures: degree prestige and degree centrality. The distribution of motifs in these two cases is compared to mine the interconnection patterns between nodes. The analysis is performed on the social network derived from email communication
Effects of paylean (ractopamine⋅HCl) on finishing pig growth and variation
A total of 336 pigs were used in a 21-day
trial to determine the effect of Paylean (9.0
g/ton Ractopamine·HCl) on finishing pig
growth and variation. Pigs were allotted based on weight so that all pens had the same
initial weight and degree of variation within
the pen. Pigs fed Paylean had greater ADG and better feed efficiency than control-fed
pigs (P<0.05). However, no differences in
pen coefficient of variation were observed
(P>0.70). The results suggest that adding
Paylean to the diet improves finishing pig
growth performance but does not affect
weight variation within the pen
Evaluation of hemicell® on growth performance of late nursery pigs
A total of 276 pigs (initially 21.9 lb) was
used to determine the effects of added Hemicell® on growth performance. Hemicell® is a patented fermentation product of Bacillus lentus. The active ingredient in the fermentation product is β-mannanase. However, other enzymes such as amylase, xylanase, cellulases, and α-galactosidase also are present. It is claimed that Hemicell® degrades β-mannan in feed, thus, removing its effects as an antinutritive factor in swine diets. Dietary treatments
were arranged as a 2 x 3 factorial, with
or without 0.05% Hemicell®, in diets with 3
levels of energy density (1,388, 1,488, 1,588
ME, kcal/lb). The 100 kcal increments were achieved by the addition of wheat bran or soy
oil to a corn-soybean meal based diet. The addition of Hemicell® to the diets, regardless of energy level, did not lead to an improvement in growth performance in these late nursery pigs. Increasing energy density of the diet, however, resulted in an improved ADG and F/G

NOx and O3 above a tropical rainforest: an analysis with a global and box model
A cross-platform field campaign, OP3, was conducted in the state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo between April and July of 2008. Among the suite of observations recorded, the campaign included measurements of NOx and O3 – crucial outputs of any model chemistry mechanism. We describe the measurements of these species made from both the ground site and aircraft. We then use the output from two resolutions of the chemistry transport model p-TOMCAT to illustrate the ability of a global model chemical mechanism to capture the chemistry at the rainforest site. The basic model performance is good for NOx and poor for ozone. A box model containing the same chemical mechanism is used to explore the results of the global model in more depth and make comparisons between the two. Without some parameterization of the nighttime boundary layer – free troposphere mixing (i.e. the use of a dilution parameter), the box model does not reproduce the observations, pointing to the importance of adequately representing physical processes for comparisons with surface measurements. We conclude with a discussion of box model budget calculations of chemical reaction fluxes, deposition and mixing, and compare these results to output from p-TOMCAT. These show the same chemical mechanism behaves similarly in both models, but that emissions and advection play particularly strong roles in influencing the comparison to surface measurements
Quantum transport in double-gated graphene devices
Double-gated graphene devices provide an important platform for understanding
electrical and optical properties of graphene. Here we present transport
measurements of single layer, bilayer and trilayer graphene devices with
suspended top gates. In zero magnetic fields, we observe formation of pnp
junctions with tunable polarity and charge densities, as well as a tunable band
gap in bilayer graphene and a tunable band overlap in trilayer graphene. In
high magnetic fields, the devices' conductance are quantized at integer and
fractional values of conductance quantum, and the data are in good agreement
with a model based on edge state equilibration at pn interfaces
Electronic transport in EuB
EuB is a magnetic semiconductor in which defects introduce charge
carriers into the conduction band with the Fermi energy varying with
temperature and magnetic field. We present experimental and theoretical work on
the electronic magnetotransport in single-crystalline EuB. Magnetization,
magnetoresistance and Hall effect data were recorded at temperatures between 2
and 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 5.5 T. The negative magnetoresistance is
well reproduced by a model in which the spin disorder scattering is reduced by
the applied magnetic field. The Hall effect can be separated into an ordinary
and an anomalous part. At 20 K the latter accounts for half of the observed
Hall voltage, and its importance decreases rapidly with increasing temperature.
As for Gd and its compounds, where the rare-earth ion adopts the same Hund's
rule ground state as Eu in EuB, the standard antisymmetric
scattering mechanisms underestimate the of this contribution by several
orders of magnitude, while reproducing its almost perfectly. Well below
the bulk ferromagnetic ordering at = 12.5 K, a two-band model
successfully describes the magnetotransport. Our description is consistent with
published de Haas van Alphen, optical reflectivity, angular-resolved
photoemission, and soft X-ray emission as well as absorption data, but requires
a new interpretation for the gap feature deduced from the latter two
experiments.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, submitted to PR
Signatures of the slow solar wind streams from active regions in the inner corona
Some of local sources of the slow solar wind can be associated with
spectroscopically detected plasma outflows at edges of active regions
accompanied with specific signatures in the inner corona. The EUV telescopes
(e.g. SPIRIT/CORONAS-F, TESIS/CORONAS-Photon and SWAP/PROBA2) sometimes
observed extended ray-like structures seen at the limb above active regions in
1MK iron emission lines and described as "coronal rays". To verify the
relationship between coronal rays and plasma outflows, we analyze an isolated
active region (AR) adjacent to small coronal hole (CH) observed by different
EUV instruments in the end of July - beginning of August 2009. On August 1 EIS
revealed in the AR two compact outflows with the Doppler velocities V =10-30
km/s accompanied with fan loops diverging from their regions. At the limb the
ARCH interface region produced coronal rays observed by EUVI/STEREO-A on July
31 as well as by TESIS on August 7. The rays were co-aligned with open magnetic
field lines expanded to the streamer stalks. Using the DEM analysis, it was
found that the fan loops diverged from the outflow regions had the dominant
temperature of ~1 MK, which is similar to that of the outgoing plasma streams.
Parameters of the solar wind measured by STEREO-B, ACE, WIND, STEREO-A were
conformed with identification of the ARCH as a source region at the
Wang-Sheeley-Arge map of derived coronal holes for CR 2086. The results of the
study support the suggestion that coronal rays can represent signatures of
outflows from ARs propagating in the inner corona along open field lines into
the heliosphere.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physics; 31 Pages; 13 Figure
Implication of Genetic Variants Near TCF7L2, SLC30A8, HHEX, CDKAL1, CDKN2A/B, IGF2BP2, and FTO in Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity in 6,719 Asians
OBJECTIVE— Recent genome-wide association studies have identified six novel genes for type 2 diabetes and obesity and confirmed TCF7L2 as the major type 2 diabetes gene to date in Europeans. However, the implications of these genes in Asians are unclear
CDMS, Supersymmetry and Extra Dimensions
The CDMS experiment aims to directly detect massive, cold dark matter
particles originating from the Milky Way halo. Charge and lattice excitations
are detected after a particle scatters in a Ge or Si crystal kept at ~30 mK,
allowing to separate nuclear recoils from the dominating electromagnetic
background. The operation of 12 detectors in the Soudan mine for 75 live days
in 2004 delivered no evidence for a signal, yielding stringent limits on dark
matter candidates from supersymmetry and universal extra dimensions. Thirty Ge
and Si detectors are presently installed in the Soudan cryostat, and operating
at base temperature. The run scheduled to start in 2006 is expected to yield a
one order of magnitude increase in dark matter sensitivity.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the 7th UCLA symposium on
