Broadband X-ray Spectral Study of Nuclear Structure in Local Obscured Radio Galaxies

Radio galaxies are a key population to understand the importance of relativistic jets in AGN feedback. We present the results of a systematic, broadband X-ray spectral analysis of hard X-ray selected radio galaxies to investigate their nuclear structures. In this study, we focus on the seven most radio-loud, X-ray obscured narrow line radio galaxies in the \textit{Swift}/BAT 70 month AGN catalog. The spectra from 0.5 keV up to 66 keV obtained with \textit{Suzaku} and \textit{NuSTAR} of six objects are newly analyzed here by utilizing the X-ray clumpy torus model (XCLUMPY), whereas we refer to Ogawa et al. (2021) for the results of Centaurus A. We find that these radio galaxies have similar torus covering fractions compared with radio quiet AGNs at the same Eddington ratios (3<logλEdd<1-3 < \log \lambda_{\rm Edd} < -1). This result implies that (1) the torus structure is not an important factor that determines the presence of jets and (2) AGN jets have physically little effect on the torus.Comment: 10 pages (4 tables/14 figures in the main text), accepted in MNRA

The Nagasaki World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Mental Health conducted the WHO Coordinated Multi-Center Study of the Long-term Course and Outcome of Schizophrenia as a part of the International Study on Schizophrenia (ISoS). The study used 107 patients who were initially diagnosed as having ICD-9 schizophrenia for the WHO Collaborative Study on the Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders (DOSMeD). Subjects were first collected in 1979-1980 for an incidence study of schizophrenia in Nagasaki. In this 15-yearfollow- up study, 7 subjects died, 43 subjects were lost to follow-up and 57 were successfully traced. Among the 7 death cases, 4 suicides were confirmed and 1 was suspected. During the 15-year period, 25 (44%) of the 57 living subjects displayed continuous psychotic course type schizophrenia. During the last 2 years, 14 (25%) were not psychotic ; 31 (54%) were continuously psychotic. Global Assessment of Functioning Scale for Symptomatology (GAF-S) indicated symptomatological outcomes : 16 (28%) had severe symptoms (GAF-S70). Social outcome was evaluated using the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale for Disability (GAF-D): 28 (49%) showed poor adjustment (GAF-D70). The overall time trend was almost evenly divided in thirds : 20 (35%) were getting better, 18 (32%) were the same and 19 (33%) were worse. The present study showed that the outcome of schizophrenia is not always poor, although some patients display a continuous course and poor outcome

Recently the measurement of cellular DNA content has been focused on knowing the extent of cancer extension and biological behaviour of the tumor cells as well as on producting occurrence of recurrence and the survival time in patients with carcinomas of various organs. And also it is well known that tumor markers such as CEA, CA19-9 and CA72-2 are of great value in predicting recurrence in the follow-up study. It is common that colorectal cancers show well differentiated carcinoma which demonstrates relatively fair prognosis. However, some revealed aggressive and rapid extension of carcinoma, indicating a poor prognosis. The purpose of this study is to certify the significance of the measurement of cellular DNA content for assessing biologic behavior of colorectal cancer in comparison with clinicopathologic factors which have been used for assessment of their prognosis. Development of flow cytometer enabled us to measure the nuclear DNA content with ease, speed and producibility. Furthermore, prevalence of flow cytometric technique makes it possible to know more accurate outcome. When assessed biologically aggressive behavior of tumor cells, potent chemotherapy and extensive surgery are mandatory for improvement of the outcome. It is necessary to search for the method of the accurate assessment of the outcome for patients with carcinomas. The purpose of this study is to clarify the validity of nuclear DNA measurement for assessment of the prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer in comparison with clinicopathologic factors

Identification of the sex-determining factor in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha reveals unique evolution of sex chromosomes in a haploid system

半数体生物の性染色体上の性決定遺伝子を解明 --コケがもつ現生生物最古の起源の性染色体--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-11-08.Sex determination is a central process for sexual reproduction and is often regulated by a sex determinant encoded on a sex chromosome. Rules that govern the evolution of sex chromosomes via specialization and degeneration following the evolution of a sex determinant have been well studied in diploid organisms. However, distinct predictions apply to sex chromosomes in organisms where sex is determined in the haploid phase of the life cycle: both sex chromosomes, female U and male V, are expected to maintain their gene functions, even though both are non-recombining. This is in contrast to the X-Y (or Z-W) asymmetry and Y (W) chromosome degeneration in XY (ZW) systems of diploids. Here, we provide evidence that sex chromosomes diverged early during the evolution of haploid liverworts and identify the sex determinant on the Marchantia polymorpha U chromosome. This gene, Feminizer, encodes a member of the plant-specific BASIC PENTACYSTEINE transcription factor family. It triggers female differentiation via regulation of the autosomal sex-determining locus of FEMALE GAMETOPHYTE MYB and SUPPRESSOR OF FEMINIZATION. Phylogenetic analyses of Feminizer and other sex chromosome genes indicate dimorphic sex chromosomes had already been established 430 mya in the ancestral liverwort. Feminizer also plays a role in reproductive induction that is shared with its gametolog on the V chromosome, suggesting an ancestral function, distinct from sex determination, was retained by the gametologs. This implies ancestral functions can be preserved after the acquisition of a sex determination mechanism during the evolution of a dominant haploid sex chromosome system

To investigate the adequate use of contact lenses (CL) and the necessity health guidance to prevent ocular disorders, we conducted a questionnaire survey regarding the use of CL and the presence or absence of ocular disorders in 127 students from whom informed consent regarding the survey contents was obtained. Seventy students (55.1%) used CL. The make-to-female ratio was 1:2. The mean interval from the start of CL application was 5.1±2.4 years. The types of CL consisted of hard CL in 12.9% of the 70 students, conventional soft CL (SCL) in 21.4%, frequent-replacement SCL (2 weeks) (FRSCL) in 50.0%, and daily disposable SCL in 15.7%. The proportion of students using FRSCL was the highest. The duration of wearing CL per day ranged from 12 to 14 hours; students wearing CL over many hours accounted for more than 50%. Concerning their experience regarding CL-related ocular disorders, 62.9% reported a history of oculopathy, including severe cases such as endophthalmitis. These results suggest that a method to inform CL users of the risk of CL-related ocular disorders, which develop despite appropriate care and periodic consultations, should be examined

Insights into Land Plant Evolution Garnered from the Marchantia polymorpha Genome.

The evolution of land flora transformed the terrestrial environment. Land plants evolved from an ancestral charophycean alga from which they inherited developmental, biochemical, and cell biological attributes. Additional biochemical and physiological adaptations to land, and a life cycle with an alternation between multicellular haploid and diploid generations that facilitated efficient dispersal of desiccation tolerant spores, evolved in the ancestral land plant. We analyzed the genome of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a member of a basal land plant lineage. Relative to charophycean algae, land plant genomes are characterized by genes encoding novel biochemical pathways, new phytohormone signaling pathways (notably auxin), expanded repertoires of signaling pathways, and increased diversity in some transcription factor families. Compared with other sequenced land plants, M. polymorpha exhibits low genetic redundancy in most regulatory pathways, with this portion of its genome resembling that predicted for the ancestral land plant. Data on a simple method for producing a solution that contains a high partial pressure of oxygen and a low partial pressure of carbon dioxide

    No full text
The data presented here shows a simple method for producing a solution that contains a high partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) and a low partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2). This novel solution was created by simply injecting oxygen gas into conventional supplemental bicarbonate fluid for renal replacement therapy. We compared the gas profiles of the novel solution and the conventional fluid in vitro. There was a significant increase in pO2 and pH, and a significant decrease in pCO2 in the experimental solution, in each of which an additional volume of oxygen was injected. The method shown here is capable of facilitating an increase of pO2 and decrease of pCO2 by using a closed fluid bag without any special devices
