Monitoring the efficiency of iron chelation therapy: the potential of nontransferrin-bound iron.

    No full text
The major ligands of nontransferrin-bound iron (NTBI) are suggested to be citrate and albumin. The proportion of iron binding to albumin is influenced by the degree of oxidation and glycation of the protein. LC-ICP-MS is demonstrated to be a useful technique for the speciation of NTBI, with unprocessed serum being subjected to analysis. Ferritin iron, citrate iron, and ferrioxamine can be quantified using this technique. This review describes the use of a new fluorescent probe for NTBI quantification

A constraint-based methodology for product design with virtual reality

This paper presents a constraint-based methodology for product design with advanced virtual reality technologies. A hierarchically structured and constraint-based data model is developed to support product design from features to parts and further to assemblies in a VR environment. Product design in the VR environment is performed in an intuitive manner through precise constraint-based manipulations. Constraint-based manipulations are accompanied with automatic constraint recognition and precise constraint satisfaction to establish constraints between objects, and are further realized by allowable motions for precise 3D interactions in the VR environment. The allowable motions are represented as a mathematical matrix and derived from constraints between objects by constraint solving. A procedure-based degrees-of-freedom combination approach is presented for 3D constraint solving. A rule-based constraint recognition engine is developed for both constraint-based manipulations and implicitly incorporating constraints into the VR environment. An intuitive method is presented for recognizing pairs of mating features between assembly components. Examples are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology

Deferiprone–resveratrol hybrid attenuates iron accumulation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defenses in iron-loaded human Huh7 hepatic cells

Chronic liver diseases are complications of thalassemia with iron overload. Iron chelators are required to remove excessive iron, and antioxidants are supplemented to diminish harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), purposing to ameliorate oxidative liver damage and dysfunctions. The deferiprone–resveratrol hybrid (DFP–RVT) is a synthetic iron chelator possessing anti-β-amyloid peptide aggregation, anti-malarial activity, and hepatoprotection in plasmodium-infected mice. The study focuses on investigating the antioxidant, cytotoxicity, iron-chelating, anti-lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense properties of DFP–RVT in iron-loaded human hepatocellular carcinoma (Huh7) cells. In the findings, DFP–RVT dose dependently bound Fe(II) and Fe(III) and exerted stronger ABTS•- and DPPH•-scavenging (IC50 = 8.0 and 164 μM, respectively) and anti-RBC hemolytic activities (IC50 = 640 μM) than DFP but weaker than RVT (p < 0.01). DFP–RVT was neither toxic to Huh7 cells nor PBMCs. In addition, DFP–RVT diminished the level of redox-active iron (p < 0.01) and decreased the non-heme iron content (p < 0.01) in iron-loaded Huh7 cells effectively when compared without treatment in the order of DFP–RVT > RVT ∼ DFP treatments (50 µM each). Moreover, the compound decreased levels of hepatic ROS in a dose-dependent manner and the level of malondialdehyde, which was stronger than DFP but weaker than RVT. Furthermore, DFP–RVT restored the decrease in the GSH content and GPX and SOD activities (p < 0.01) in iron-loaded Huh7 cells in the dose-dependent manner, consistently in the order of RVT > DFP–RVT > DFP. Thus, the DFP–RVT hybrid possesses potent iron chelation, antioxidation, anti-lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense against oxidative liver damage under iron overload

ICT Adoption and Innovation in Ghana

Using survey data collected in 2013, and multivariate probit estimation, this chapter examines the effect of ICT on innovation performance of manufacturing firms in Ghana. The estimation results suggest that ICT not only leads to a higher likelihood of firms to innovate but also directly enhances the growth of sales in new innovative products. In particular, our results show that the internet serves as the most important source of information, enabling local firms to transcend borders and integrate and take advantage of existing and developed infrastructure existing elsewhere for local innovation activities. The results suggest that knowledge is now a click away and policy must encourage firms to participate and take advantage of the knowledge economy by engaging and interacting with frontier firms
