    Monitoring of abiotic degradation of photocrosslinked silicone acrylate coatings: the fate of the photoinitiator

    International audiencePhotocrosslinked silicone acrylates are used in a variety of applications, such as printing inks, adhesives, or adhesive release liners. Their production requires the use of a photoinitiator. Even if the photoinitiator represents a minor mass in the photocurable formulation (2–10%), it is used in excess and residual amounts may therefore remain in the polymerized products and possibly migrate into the environment during the use of the products and/or at their end-of-life stage. Little is known on the possible degradation of silicone acrylate which may increase the potential release. The present study investigated the release of Darocur 1173, the most commonly used photoinitiator, from silicone matrix and the effect of accelerated photoageing on the extent of the phenomenon. Leaching tests in water were conducted on thin-coated plastic film (release liners) made of a mixture of polypropylene and polyethylene. Results showed that 44% of the Darocur 1173 photoinitiator initially used in silicone formulation was released from silicone matrix in the leaching test. Accelerated photoageing obtained by UV irradiation of the films for up to 200 h was found to favor photoinitiator degradation but also induced a strong and fast oxidation of silicone-coated liners as compared to that of uncoated ones

    High peak-power stretcher-free femtosecond fiber amplifier using passive spatio-temporal coherent combining

    International audienceWe report on the passive coherent combining of up to 8 temporally and spatially separated ultrashort pulses amplified in a stretcher-free ytterbium-doped fiber system. An initial femtosecond pulse is split into 4 temporal replicas using divided-pulse amplification, and subsequently divided in two counter-propagating beams in a Sagnac interferometer containing a fiber amplifier. The spatio-temporal distribution of the peak-power inside the amplifier allows the generation of record 3.1 ”J and 50 fs pulses at 1 MHz of repetition rate with 52 MW of peak-power from a stretcher-free fiber amplifier and without additional nonlinear post-compression stages

    CamemBERT: a Tasty French Language Model

    Pretrained language models are now ubiquitous in Natural Language Processing. Despite their success, most available models have either been trained on English data or on the concatenation of data in multiple languages. This makes practical use of such models --in all languages except English-- very limited. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of training monolingual Transformer-based language models for other languages, taking French as an example and evaluating our language models on part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing, named entity recognition and natural language inference tasks. We show that the use of web crawled data is preferable to the use of Wikipedia data. More surprisingly, we show that a relatively small web crawled dataset (4GB) leads to results that are as good as those obtained using larger datasets (130+GB).     Cervical Spine Hyperextension and Altered Posturo-Respiratory Coupling in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

    Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with postural dysfunction characterized by abnormal spinal curvature and disturbance of balance and walking, whose pathophysiology is poorly understood. We hypothesized that it may be the result of a pathological interaction between postural and ventilatory functions. Twelve patients with OSAS (4 women, age 53 years [51-63] (median [quartiles]), apnea hypopnea index 31/h [24-41]) were compared with 12 healthy matched controls. Low dose biplanar X-rays (EOSÂź system) were acquired and personalized three-dimensional models of the spine and pelvis were reconstructed. We also estimated posturo-respiratory coupling by measurement of respiratory emergence, obtaining synchronized center of pressure data from a stabilometric platform and ventilation data recorded by an optico-electronic system of movement analysis. Compared with controls, OSAS patients, had cervical hyperextension with anterior projection of the head (angle OD-C7 12° [8; 14] vs. 5° [4; 8]; p = 0.002), and thoracic hyperkyphosis (angle T1-T12 65° [51; 71] vs. 49° [42; 59]; p = 0.039). Along the mediolateral axis: (1) center of pressure displacement was greater in OSAS patients, whose balance was poorer (19.2 mm [14.2; 31.5] vs. 8.5 [1.4; 17.8]; p = 0.008); (2) respiratory emergence was greater in OSAS patients, who showed increased postural disturbance of respiratory origin (19.2% [9.9; 24.0] vs. 8.1% [6.4; 10.4]; p = 0.028). These results are evidence for the centrally-mediated and primarily respiratory origin of the postural dysfunction in OSAS. It is characterized by an hyperextension of the cervical spine with a compensatory hyperkyphosis, and an alteration in posturo-respiratory coupling, apparently secondary to upper airway instability.This work was supported in part by the Legs Poix (LEG 1604) of the Chancellerie des UniversitĂ©s de Paris.     Le site de La Boudine est localisĂ© sur la commune de Saumane-de-Vaucluse. Le mobilier archĂ©ologique dĂ©couvert ensurface a pu ĂȘtre attribuĂ© au NĂ©olithique moyen. Cette homogĂ©nĂ©itĂ© et la proximitĂ© du site avec les gisements de silex bĂ©doulien des monts de Vaucluse, ont motivĂ© une opĂ©ration de sondage. Des lambeaux d’occupation nĂ©olithique ont pu ĂȘtre dĂ©couverts. Le site a Ă©tĂ© fortement Ă©rodĂ© mais cette opĂ©ration permet de documenter positivement l’occupation humaine dans les piĂ©monts des monts de Vaucluse.The site of La Boudine is located on the municipality of Saumane-de-Vaucluse. The artefacts on surface can be attributed to middle Neolithic. This homogeneity and the proximity with the deposits of bedoulian flint of Monts de Vaucluse, have motivated an excavation. Remaining of Neolithic activity have been discovered. The site was strongly affected by erosion. However, this studies allows to document the human activity in piedmont of monts de Vaucluse

    Risk Score, Causes, and Clinical Impact of Failure of Transradial Approach for Percutaneous Coronary Interventions

    ObjectivesTo study the causes of and to develop a risk score for failure of transradial approach (TRA) for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).BackgroundTRA-PCI failure has been reported in 5% to 10% of cases.MethodsTRA-PCI failure was categorized as primary (clinical reasons) or crossover failure. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine independent predictors of TRA-PCI failure, and an integer risk score was developed.ResultsFrom January to June 2010, TRA-PCI was attempted in 1,609 (97.3%) consecutive patients, whereas 45 (2.7%) had primary TRA-PCI failure. Crossover TRA-PCI failure occurred in 30 (1.8%) patients. Causes of primary TRA-PCI failure included chronic radial artery occlusion (11%), previous coronary artery bypass graft (27%), and cardiogenic shock (20%). Causes for crossover TRA-PCI failure included: inadequate puncture in 17 patients (57%); radial artery spasm in 5 (17%); radial loop in 4 (13%); subclavian tortuosity in 2 (7%); and inadequate guide catheter support in 2 (7%) patients. Female sex (odds ratio [OR]: 3.2; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.95 to 5.26, p < 0.0001), previous coronary artery bypass graft (OR: 6.1; 95% CI: 3.63 to 10.05, p < 0.0001), and cardiogenic shock (OR: 11.2; 95% CI: 2.78 to 41.2, p = 0.0011) were independent predictors of TRA-PCI failure. Risk score values from 0 to 7 predicted a TRA-PCI failure rate from 2% to 80%.ConclusionsIn a high-volume radial center, 2.7% of patients undergoing PCI are excluded from initial TRA on clinical grounds, whereas crossover to femoral approach is required in only 1.8% of the cases. A new simple clinical risk score is developed to predict TRA-PCI failure

These data are still extremely difficult to obtain. Methods currently used are based on dietary questionnaires which have inherent limitations linked to self-reporting. A complementary approach to questionnaires is the use of biomarkers. However, only a few biomarkers have been properly validated, which do not cover the wide range offoods consumed. Metabolomics has emerged as a promising approach to discover nutritional biomarkers. Typically, plasma or urine samples collected before and after acute intake of a specific food are profiled using NMR or high resolution Mass Spectrometry (MS) and compared usingmultivariate statistics to pinpoint the signals reflecting the consumption of the target food. In a proof-of-concept study on citrus, we showed that urine profiling of cohort subjects stratified by consumption could be a more effective strategy for discovery of sensitive biomarkers of intake

    Dominant-negative mutations in human IL6ST underlie hyper-IgE syndrome

    Autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome (AD-HIES) is typically caused by dominant-negative (DN) STAT3 mutations. Patients suffer from cold staphylococcal lesions and mucocutaneous candidiasis, severe allergy, and skeletal abnormalities. We report 12 patients from 8 unrelated kindreds with AD-HIES due to DN IL6ST mutations. We identified seven different truncating mutations, one of which was recurrent. The mutant alleles encode GP130 receptors bearing the transmembrane domain but lacking both the recycling motif and all four STAT3-recruiting tyrosine residues. Upon overexpression, the mutant proteins accumulate at the cell surface and are loss of function and DN for cellular responses to IL-6, IL-11, LIF, and OSM. Moreover, the patients’ heterozygous leukocytes and fibroblasts respond poorly to IL-6 and IL-11. Consistently, patients with STAT3 and IL6ST mutations display infectious and allergic manifestations of IL-6R deficiency, and some of the skeletal abnormalities of IL-11R deficiency. DN STAT3 and IL6ST mutations thus appear to underlie clinical phenocopies through impairment of the IL-6 and IL-11 response pathways

    Impaired IL-23-dependent induction of IFN-gamma underlies mycobacterial disease in patients with inherited TYK2 deficiency

    Human cells homozygous for rare loss-of-expression (LOE) TYK2 alleles have impaired, but not abolished, cellular responses to IFN-alpha/beta (underlying viral diseases in the patients) and to IL-12 and IL-23 (underlying mycobacterial diseases). Cells homozygous for the common P1104A TYK2 allele have selectively impaired responses to IL-23 (underlying isolated mycobacterial disease). We report three new forms of TYK2 deficiency in six patients from five families homozygous for rare TYK2 alleles (R864C, G996R, G634E, or G1010D) or compound heterozygous for P1104A and a rare allele (A928V). All these missense alleles encode detectable proteins. The R864C and G1010D alleles are hypomorphic and loss-of-function (LOF), respectively, across signaling pathways. By contrast, hypomorphic G996R, G634E, and A928V mutations selectively impair responses to IL-23, like P1104A.
