    Inverse Iron Isotope Effect on the transition temperature of the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconductor

    We report that (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconductor (a transition temperature, Tc = 38 K) shows inverse Iron isotope effect (-0.18) (the sample including the larger atomic weight of Fe depicts higher Tc). Measurements of both temperature dependent magnetization and resistivity reveal a clear inverse shift by systematic studies on Tc using three types of Fe-isotopes (Fe-54, natural Fe and Fe-57). This indicates the first evidence of the inverse isotope effect in high-Tc superconductors. This atomic mass dependence on Tc implies the exotic coupling mechanism.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Unusual cause of a painful right testicle in a 16-year-old man: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Urgent surgical exploration of the scrotum of a child or teenager who presents with a painful and swollen testicle is paramount if testicular torsion is not to be missed. It is extremely rare for a non-scrotal pathology to present with acute scrotal signs. Here we present such a rare case and emphasize the importance of being aware of this potential clinical pitfall.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 16-year-old Caucasian man presented as a surgical emergency with a five to six hour history of a painful, red, and swollen right hemiscrotum. He also complained of vague lower abdominal pain, vomiting, and watery diarrhea. He had a temperature of 38.5°C and a tender, red, and swollen right hemiscrotum. The right testicle appeared elevated. He was mildly tender in his central and upper abdomen and less so in the lower abdomen. No convincing localizing abdominal signs were noted. He had an increased white cell count (15 × 10<sup>9</sup>/L) and C-reactive protein (CRP; 300 mg/L). Urgent right hemiscrotal exploration revealed about 5 ml of pus in the tunica vaginalis and a normal testicle. A right iliac fossa incision identified the cause: a perforated retrocecal appendix. Appendectomy was performed, and both the abdomen and scrotum washed copiously with saline before closure. The patient made an uneventful recovery.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Acute appendicitis presenting with scrotal signs due to a patent processus vaginalis is an extremely rare clinical entity. To date, fewer than five such cases have been reported in the medical literature. It is, therefore, extremely important to be aware of this unusual clinical scenario, as only a high index of suspicion will enable prompt, successful management of both the appendicitis and the scrotal abscess.</p

    Cooperative Effect of Coulomb Interaction and Electron-Phonon Coupling on the Heavy Fermion State in the Two-Orbital Periodic Anderson Model

    We investigate the two-orbital periodic Anderson model, where the local orbital fluctuations of f-electrons couple with a two-fold degenerate Jahn-Teller phonon, by using the dynamical mean-field theory. It is found that the heavy fermion state caused by the Coulomb interaction between f-electrons U is largely enhanced due to the electron-phonon coupling g, in contrast to the case with the single-orbital periodic Anderson model where the effects of U and g compete to each other. In the heavy fermion state for large UU and g, both the orbital and lattice fluctuations are enhanced, while the charge (valence) and spin fluctuations are suppressed. In the strong coupling regime, a sharp soft phonon mode with a large spectral weight is observed for small U, while a broad soft phonon mode with a small spectral weight is observed for large U. The cooperative effect of U and g for half-filling with two f-electrons per atom nf=2n_f=2 is more pronounced than that for quarter-filling with nf=1n_f=1.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in JPS

    Effects of an anionic surfactant (FFD-6) on the energy and information flow between a primary producer (Scenedesmus obliquus) and a consumer (Daphnia magna)

    The effects of a commercially available anionic surfactant solution (FFD-6) on growth and morphology of a common green alga (Scenedesmus obliquus) and on survival and clearance rates of the water flea Daphnia magna were studied. The surfactant-solution elicited a morphological response (formation of colonies) in Scenedesmus at concentrations of 10–100 μl l−1 that were far below the No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) value of 1,000 μl l−1 for growth inhibition. The NOEC-value of FFD-6 for colony-induction was 3 μl l−1. Daphnia survival was strongly affected by FFD-6, yielding LC50–24h and LC50–48h of 148 and 26 μl l−1, respectively. In addition, clearance rates of Daphnia feeding on unicellular Scenedesmus were inhibited by FFD-6, yielding a 50% inhibition (EC50–1.5h) at 5.2 μl l−1 with a NOEC of 0.5 μl l−1. When Daphnia were offered FFD-6-induced food in which eight-celled colonies (43 × 29 μm) were most abundant, clearance rates (~0.14 ml ind.−1 h−1) were only 25% the rates of animals that were offered non-induced unicellular (15 × 5 μm) Scenedesmus (~0.56 ml ind.−1 h−1). As FFD-6 concentrations in the treated food used in the experiments were far below the NOEC for clearance rate inhibition, it is concluded that the feeding rate depression was caused by the altered morphology of the Scenedesmus moving them out of the feeding window of the daphnids. The surfactant evoked a response in Scenedesmus that is similar to the natural chemically induced defensive reaction against grazers and could disrupt the natural information conveyance between these plankton organisms

    Phase Transition in \nu=2 Bilayer Quantum Hall State

    The Hall-plateau width and the activation energy were measured in the bilayer quantum Hall state at filling factor \nu=2, 1 and 2/3, by changing the total electron density and the density ratio in the two quantum wells. Their behavior are remarkably different from one to another. The \nu=1 state is found stable over all measured range of the density difference, while the \nu=2/3$ state is stable only around the balanced point.     Heat exposure assessment based on individual daily mobility patterns in Dhaka, Bangladesh

    Despite a growing body of evidence indicating increasing health impacts from heat exposure secondary to climate change, previous studies have assessed heat exposure based only on the residential locations of individuals. Such assessments may be imprecise as they do not reflect the impact of people's daily mobility patterns. Furthermore, most studies have focused on urban areas in developed countries, whilst relatively little is known about the situation in developing nations, particularly a tropical climate region where heat exposure is severe for residents. As a case study in Dhaka, Bangladesh, we conducted a heat exposure assessment by integrating individual mobility data which was obtained from a questionnaire survey. Estimates of heat exposure were made using remotely sensed land surface temperature data. Population exposures based on residential locations were compared to a dynamic exposure model that incorporated mobility. Especially for people in suburban areas, we found the traditional assessment method based on the static residential model underestimated exposure compared to the dynamic model owing to the fact that some residents migrate into the city center each day where they tend to experience higher temperatures. We found small differences in heat exposure levels between social groups stratified by gender, age, and income based on the dynamic and static models. These results demonstrate that integration of mobility patterns may be important when comparing exposure levels between urban and suburban populations. Our findings may raise issues regarding new remediation measures against urban heat islands, such as reviewing the distribution of health resources or generating a risk map

    Dermatitis associated with exposure to a marine cyanobacterium during recreational water exposure

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Anecdotal evidence reported an outbreak of symptoms on Fraser Island during the late 1990s similar to those expected from exposure to dermotoxins found in the cyanobacterium <it>L. majuscula</it>. This coincided with the presence of a bloom of <it>L. majuscula</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Records from the Fraser Island National Parks First aid station were examined. Information on cyanobacterial blooms at Fraser Island were obtained from Queensland National Parks rangers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Examination of first aid records from Fraser Island revealed an outbreak of symptoms predominantly in January and February 1998.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>During a bloom of <it>L. majuscula </it>there were numerous reports of symptoms that could be attributed to dermotoxins found in <it>L. majuscula</it>. The other four years examined had no <it>L. majuscula </it>blooms and the number of <it>L. majuscula </it>symptoms was much reduced. These cases comprised a high percentage of the cases treated at the first aid station.</p
