Pt decorated amorphous RuIr alloys as high efficiency electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation
This study focuses primarily on improving the utilization and
activity of anodic catalysts for methanol electro-oxidation. The
Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) anodic catalyst, a carbon
supported Pt decorated amorphous RuIr nanoparticles catalyst
(Pt@RuIr/C) was prepared by a two-step reduction method. The
structure of Pt@RuIr/C nanoparticles was confirmed by
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Diffraction
(XRD). The Pt@RuIr electrocatalysts exhibited good uniformity in
distribution. Cyclic Voltammetry experiments showed that under
the same quality of noble-metal, the Pt@RuIr/C catalyst had higher
activity than the PtRuIr/C catalyst for methanol oxidation. It was
also shown that the as-prepared structure of the Pt decorated
amorphous RuIr alloys could obviously decrease the usage of
noble-metal and enhance its catalytic activity at the same time.Web of Scienc
Ultrastrong conductive in situ composite composed of nanodiamond incoherently embedded in disordered multilayer graphene
Traditional ceramics or metals cannot simultaneously achieve ultrahigh strength and high electrical conductivity. The elemental carbon can form a variety of allotropes with entirely different physical properties, providing versatility for tuning mechanical and electrical properties in a wide range. Here, by precisely controlling the extent of transformation of amorphous carbon into diamond within a narrow temperature–pressure range, we synthesize an in situ composite consisting of ultrafine nanodiamond homogeneously dispersed in disordered multilayer graphene with incoherent interfaces, which demonstrates a Knoop hardness of up to ~53 GPa, a compressive strength of up to ~54 GPa and an electrical conductivity of 670–1,240 S m(–1) at room temperature. With atomically resolving interface structures and molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that amorphous carbon transforms into diamond through a nucleation process via a local rearrangement of carbon atoms and diffusion-driven growth, different from the transformation of graphite into diamond. The complex bonding between the diamond-like and graphite-like components greatly improves the mechanical properties of the composite. This superhard, ultrastrong, conductive elemental carbon composite has comprehensive properties that are superior to those of the known conductive ceramics and C/C composites. The intermediate hybridization state at the interfaces also provides insights into the amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition of carbon
Large extraordinary Hall effect in [Pt/Co]5/Ru/[Co/Pt]5 multilayer
This Brief Report presents giant extraordinary Hall effect (EHE) in the Ru-mediated antiferromagnetically coupled [Pt/Co]5/Ru/[Co/Pt]5 multilayers (MLs) compared with those MLs without the Ru spacer. The enhancement of the EHE is attributed to the strong Ru/Co interface scattering. Through the variation in the Pt layer thickness and the temperature, we determine the relation between the Hall voltage and the longitudinal resistivity. It is found that the conventional scaling analysis has difficulties in consistently interpreting our data
Deficiency of Th17 cells in hyper IgE syndrome due to mutations in STAT3
Hyper–immunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES) is a primary immune deficiency characterized by abnormal and devastating susceptibility to a narrow spectrum of infections, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Recent investigations have identified mutations in STAT3 in the majority of HIES patients studied. Despite the identification of the genetic cause of HIES, the mechanisms underlying the pathological features of this disease remain to be elucidated. Here, we demonstrate a failure of CD4+ T cells harboring heterozygous STAT3 mutations to generate interleukin 17–secreting (i.e., T helper [Th]17) cells in vivo and in vitro due to a failure to express sufficient levels of the Th17-specific transcriptional regulator retinoid-related orphan receptor γt. Because Th17 cells are enriched for cells with specificities against fungal antigens, our results may explain the pattern of infection susceptibility characteristic of patients with HIES. Furthermore, they underscore the importance of Th17 responses in normal host defense against the common pathogens S. aureus and C. albicans
Possible implications of the channeling effect in NaI(Tl) crystals
The channeling effect of low energy ions along the crystallographic axes and
planes of NaI(Tl) crystals is discussed in the framework of corollary
investigations on WIMP Dark Matter candidates. In fact, the modeling of this
existing effect implies a more complex evaluation of the luminosity yield for
low energy recoiling Na and I ions. In the present paper related
phenomenological arguments are developed and possible implications are
discussed at some extent.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, preprint ROM2F/2007/15, submitted for

Semileptonic decays and Charmonium distribution amplitude
In this paper we study the semileptonic decays of the meson in the
Light-Cone Sum Rule (LCSR) approach. The result for each channel depends on the
corresponding distribution amplitude of the final meson. For the case of
decaying into a pseudoscalar meson, to twist-3 accuracy only the leading twist
distribution amplitude (DA) is involved if we start from a chiral current. If
we choose a suitable chiral current in the vector meson case, the main twist-3
contributions are also eliminated and we can consider the leading twist
contribution only. The leading twist distribution amplitudes of the charmonium
and other heavy mesons are given by a model approach in the reasonable way.
Employing this charmonium distribution amplitude we find the cross section
which is consistent with Belle
and BaBar's data. Based on this model, we calculate the form factors for
various decay modes in the corresponding regions. Extrapolating the form
factors to the whole kinetic regions, we get the decay widths and branching
ratios for various decay modes including their modes when they are
kinematically accessible.Comment: Changed content partially, Added references, 16 pages,2 figure

Controllable Laser Ion Acceleration
In this paper a future laser ion accelerator is discussed to make the laser-based ion accelerator compact and controllable. Especially a collimation device is focused in this paper. The future laser ion accelerator should have an ion source, ion collimators, ion beam bunchers, and ion post acceleration devices [Laser Therapy 22, 103(2013)]: the ion particle energy and the ion energy spectrum are controlled to meet requirements for a future compact laser ion accelerator for ion cancer therapy or for other purposes. The energy efficiency from the laser to ions is improved by using a solid target with a fine sub-wavelength structure or a near-critical density gas plasma. The ion beam collimation is performed by holes behind the solid target or a multi-layered solid target. The control of the ion energy spectrum and the ion particle energy, and the ion beam bunching would be successfully realized by a multistage laser-target interaction
Mass measurements of neutron-deficient Y, Zr, and Nb isotopes and their impact on rp and νp nucleosynthesis processes

For further details please see: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of 82Zr and 84Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of ∼10 keV, and the masses of 79Y, 81Zr, and 83Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low α separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr–Nb cycle in the rp-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of 83Nb was determined to be 490(400) keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the p-nucleus 84Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous νp-process simulations.Peer reviewe
