Dust Formation and He II 4686 emission in the Dense Shell of the Peculiar Type Ib Supernova 2006jc
We present evidence for the formation of dust grains in an unusual Type Ib SN
based on late-time spectra of SN 2006jc. The progenitor suffered an LBV-like
outburst just 2 yr earlier, and we propose that the dust formation is a
consequence of the SN blast wave overtaking that LBV-like shell. The key
evidence for dust formation is (a) the appearance of a red/near-IR continuum
source fit by 1600 K graphite grains, and (b) fading of the redshifted sides of
He I emission lines, yielding progressively more asymmetric blueshifted lines
as dust obscures receding material. This provides the strongest case yet for
dust formation in any SN Ib/c. Both developments occurred between 51 and 75 d
after peak, while other SNe observed to form dust did so after a few hundred
days. Geometric considerations indicate that dust formed in the dense swept-up
shell between the forward and reverse shocks, and not in the freely expanding
SN ejecta. Rapid cooling leading to dust formation may have been aided by
extremely high shell densities, as indicated by He I line ratios. The brief
epoch of dust formation is accompanied by He II 4686 emission and enhanced
X-ray emission. These clues suggest that the unusual dust formation in this
object was not due to properties of the SN itself, but instead -- like most
peculiarities of SN 2006jc -- was a consequence of the dense environment

A scalable expressive ensemble learning using Random Prism: a MapReduce approach
The induction of classification rules from previously unseen examples is one of the most important data mining tasks in science as well as commercial applications. In order to reduce the influence of noise in the data, ensemble learners are often applied. However, most ensemble learners are based on decision tree classifiers which are affected by noise. The Random Prism classifier has recently been proposed as an alternative to the popular Random Forests classifier, which is based on decision trees. Random Prism is based on the Prism family of algorithms, which is more robust to noise. However, like most ensemble classification approaches, Random Prism also does not scale well on large training data. This paper presents a thorough discussion of Random Prism and a recently proposed parallel version of it called Parallel Random Prism. Parallel Random Prism is based on the MapReduce programming paradigm. The paper provides, for the first time, novel theoretical analysis of the proposed technique and in-depth experimental study that show that Parallel Random Prism scales well on a large number of training examples, a large number of data features and a large number of processors. Expressiveness of decision rules that our technique produces makes it a natural choice for Big Data applications where informed decision making increases the user’s trust in the system
The pricing behaviour of firms in the euro area: new survey evidence
This study investigates the pricing behaviour of firms in the euro area on the basis of surveys conducted by nine Eurosystem national central banks, covering more than 11,000 firms. The results, robust across countries, show that firms operate in monopolistically competitive markets, where prices are mostly set following markup rules and where price discrimination is common. Around one-third of firms follow mainly time-dependent pricing rules while twothirds allow for elements of state-dependence. The majority of firms take into account past and expected economic developments in their pricing decisions. Price stickiness is mainly driven by customer relationships – explicit and implicit contracts – and coordination failure. Firms adjust prices asymmetrically in response to shocks: while cost shocks have a greater impact when prices have to be raised than when they have to be reduced, reductions in demand are more likely to induce a price change than increases in demand. An experimental study on (2) modular symmetry in the quantum Hall system with a small spin-splitting
Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions were studied with a two-dimensional
electron AlGaAs/GaAs system. The temperature-driven flow diagram shows the
features of the (2) modular symmetry, which includes distorted
flowlines and shiftted critical point. The deviation of the critical
conductivities is attributed to a small but resolved spin splitting, which
reduces the symmetry in Landau quantization. [B. P. Dolan, Phys. Rev. B 62,
10278.] Universal scaling is found under the reduction of the modular symmetry.
It is also shown that the Hall conductivity could still be governed by the
scaling law when the semicircle law and the scaling on the longitudinal

Physical activity monitoring in Europe : the European physical activity surveillance system (EUPASS) approach and indicator testing.
Objectives: The main objective of this paper is to describe the approach and specific findings of the European Physical Activity Surveillance System (EUPASS) research project. In particular, the analysis presented aims at testing the reliability, comparability and predictive power of different sets of physical activity (PA) indicators. Design: First, a panel study based on computer-aided telephone interview (CATI) was designed to report PA data of a representative, selected group of about 100 persons per country at three points in time. Second, a CATI time series survey was carried out with the goal of realising about 100 interviews per month over six consecutive months. Setting: The project was carried out in eight European countries to support the development of the European Union's (EU) Health Monitoring Programme. Subjects: Random population samples (subjects aged 18 years and older) were drawn from each participating country. Results: While many PA indicators used in EU countries to date as well as the psychosocial and environmental measures tested in the present study had acceptable to good reliability coefficients, the test–retest reliability scores of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) version tested (the short (last 7 days) telephone interview IPAQ; IPAQ-S7T) were rather low. The comparability between extant national PA items and the IPAQ-S7T was low for all countries. The strongest predictors of perceived health were the psychosocial and environmental PA indicators. Conclusions: According to the results of the present study, more research is needed to further investigate and improve the quality of the IPAQ. In addition, the specific predictive power of the tested psychosocial and environmental PA indicators on perceived health should be of particular interest for designing health surveillance activities in the future
Unexpected population distribution in a microbial mat community: Sulfate-reducing bacteria localized to the highly oxic chemocline in contrast to a eukaryotic preference for anoxia
The distribution and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and eukaryotes within the upper 4 mm of a hypersaline cyanobacterial mat community were characterized at high resolution with group-specific hybridization probes to quantify 16S rRNA extracted from 100-mu m depth intervals. This revealed a preferential localization of SRB within the region defined by the oxygen chemocline. Among the different groups of SRB quantified, including members of the provisional families "Desulfovibrionaceae" and "Desulfobacteriaceae," Desulfonema-like populations dominated and accounted for up to 30% of total rRNA extracted from certain depth intervals of the chemocline. These data suggest that recognized genera of SRB are not necessarily restricted by high levels of oxygen in this mat community and the possibility of significant sulfur cycling within the chemocline. In marked contrast, eukaryotic populations in this community demonstrated a preference for regions of anoxia
MN112: a new Galactic candidate Luminous Blue Variable
We report the discovery of a new Galactic candidate Luminous Blue Variable
(cLBV) via detection of an infrared circular nebula and follow-up spectroscopy
of its central star. The nebula, MN112, is one of many dozens of circular
nebulae detected at m in the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope} archival
data, whose morphology is similar to that of nebulae associated with known
(c)LBVs and related evolved massive stars. Specifically, the core-halo
morphology of MN112 bears a striking resemblance to the circumstellar nebula
associated with the Galactic cLBV GAL 079.29+00.46, which suggests that both
nebulae might have a similar origin and that the central star of MN112 is a
LBV. The spectroscopy of the central star showed that its spectrum is almost
identical to that of the bona fide LBV P Cygni, which also supports the LBV
classification of the object. To further constrain the nature of MN112, we
searched for signatures of possible high-amplitude (\ga 1 mag) photometric
variability of the central star using archival and newly obtained photometric
data covering a 45 year period. We found that the B magnitude of the star was
constant ( 17.10.3 mag) over this period, while in the I band the
star brightened by mag during the last 17 years. Although the
non-detection of large photometric variability leads us to use the prefix
`candidate' in the classification of MN112, we remind that the long-term
photometric stability is not unusual for genuine LBVs and that the brightness
of P Cygni remains relatively stable during the last three centuries.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted to MNRA
Tracing the young massive high-eccentricity binary system Theta 1 Orionis C through periastron passage
The nearby high-mass star binary system Theta 1 Orionis C is the brightest
and most massive of the Trapezium OB stars at the core of the Orion Nebula
Cluster, and it represents a perfect laboratory to determine the fundamental
parameters of young hot stars and to constrain the distance of the Orion
Trapezium Cluster. Between January 2007 and March 2008, we observed T1OriC with
VLTI/AMBER near-infrared (H- and K-band) long-baseline interferometry, as well
as with bispectrum speckle interferometry with the ESO 3.6m and the BTA 6m
telescopes (B'- and V'-band). Combining AMBER data taken with three different
3-telescope array configurations, we reconstructed the first VLTI/AMBER
closure-phase aperture synthesis image, showing the T1OriC system with a
resolution of approx. 2 mas. To extract the astrometric data from our
spectrally dispersed AMBER data, we employed a new algorithm, which fits the
wavelength-differential visibility and closure phase modulations along the H-
and K-band and is insensitive to calibration errors induced, for instance, by
changing atmospheric conditions. Our new astrometric measurements show that the
companion has nearly completed one orbital revolution since its discovery in
1997. The derived orbital elements imply a short-period (P=11.3 yrs) and
high-eccentricity orbit (e=0.6) with periastron passage around 2002.6. The new
orbit is consistent with recently published radial velocity measurements, from
which we can also derive the first direct constraints on the mass ratio of the
binary components. We employ various methods to derive the system mass
(M_system=44+/-7 M_sun) and the dynamical distance (d=410+/-20 pc), which is in
remarkably good agreement with recently published trigonometric parallax
