A Study of Sustainable Business Models For Small and Medium Enterprises in China

    Get PDF
Although studies of sustainability business models are increasingly popular in the literature, most businesses in China seldom include sustainability elements or the triple bottom line concept in their business model design. Given the fact that China has developed and become a stronger player in the global economy, sustainable practices and triple-bottom-line, business models (social, economic and environmental sustainability), should be better represented. This paper illustrates the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) concept of business models for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in China. It also examines Chinese SMEs’ perception of their own corporate development in reference to sustainability and their understanding of the TBL concept. A Pyramid of Chinese SMEs’ Sustainability Values and a Chinese SMEs’ Sustainability Credit Score (SCS) are designed and informed by the literature review; a SWOT analysis from the TBL perspective and a survey that focuses on Chinese SMEs’ perceptions of sustainability are developed. Sustainable business models for Chinese SMEs can be customized by using the two tools, SWOT analysis and SCS

A rare case of schizophrenia coexistence with antiphospholipid syndrome, β-thalassemia, and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance

A patient with schizophrenia who was treated with chlorpromazine developed lupus anticoagulant (LA) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). On protein electrophoresis, a monoclonal immunoglobulin A peak was seen in this patient, defining a condition of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Additionally, β-thalassemia was diagnosed with the CD41-42 genotype. This condition is extremely rare, particularly in patients with schizophrenia and APS. We present a case of a patient with schizophrenia and secondary APS who had a positive LA, a significantly prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time, endogenous coagulation factor deficiency and inhibitor, no bleeding, and an unexpected finding of β-thalassemia and monoclonal IgA. Following that, a literature review on the disorders was presented

Large Ecosystem Service Benefits of Assisted Natural Regeneration

China manages the largest monoculture plantations in the world, with 24% being Chinese fir plantations. Maximizing the ecosystem services of Chinese fir plantations has important implications in global carbon cycle and biodiversity protection. Assisted natural regeneration (ANR) is a practice to convert degraded lands into more productive forests with great ecosystems services. However, the quantitative understanding of ANR ecosystem service benefits is very limited. We conducted a comprehensive field manipulation experiment to evaluate the ANR potentials. We quantified and compared key ecosystem services including surface runoff, sediment yield, dissolved organic carbon export, plant diversity, and aboveground carbon accumulation of ANR of secondary forests dominated by Castanopsis carlesii to that of Chinese fir and C. carlesii plantations. Our results showed that ANR of C. carlesii forest reduced surface runoff and sediment yield up to 50% compared with other young plantations in the first 3 years and substantially increased plant diversity. ANR also reduced the export of dissolved organic carbon by 60–90% in the first 2 years. Aboveground biomass of the young ANR forest was approximately 3–4 times of that of other young plantations, while aboveground biomass of mature ANR forests was approximately 1.4 times of that of mature Chinese fir plantations of the same age. If all Chinese fir plantations in China were replaced by ANR forests, potentially 0.7 Pg more carbon will be stored in aboveground in one rotation (25 years). The results indicate that ANR triggers positive feedbacks among soil and water conservation, biodiversity protection, and biomass accumulation and thereby enhances ecosystem services

Genomes shed light on the evolution of Begonia, a mega‐diverse genus

Clarifying the evolutionary processes underlying species diversification and adaptation is a key focus of evolutionary biology. Begonia (Begoniaceae) is one of the most species-rich angiosperm genera with ~2,000 species, most of which are shade-adapted. Here, we present chromosome-scale genome assemblies for four species of Begonia (B. loranthoides, B. masoniana, B. darthvaderiana, and B. peltatifolia), and whole genome shot-gun data for an additional 74 Begonia representatives to investigate lineage evolution and shade adaptation of the genus. The four genome assemblies range in size from 331.75 Mb (B. peltatifolia) to 799.83 Mb (B. masoniana), and harbor 22,059 - 23,444 protein-coding genes. Synteny analysis revealed a lineage specific whole-genome duplication (WGD) that occurred just before the diversification of the Begonia. Functional enrichment of gene families retained after WGD highlight the significance of modified carbohydrate metabolism and photosynthesis possibly linked to shade-adaptation in the genus, which is further supported by expansions of gene families involved in light perception and harvesting. Phylogenomic reconstructions and genomics studies indicate that genomic introgression has also played a role in the evolution of Begonia. Overall, this study provides valuable genomic resources for Begonia and suggests potential drivers underlying the diversity and adaptive evolution of this mega-diverse clade

Chromosomes 4 and 8 implicated in a genome wide SNP linkage scan of 762 prostate cancer families collected by the ICPCG

BACKGROUND In spite of intensive efforts, understanding of the genetic aspects of familial prostate cancer (PC) remains largely incomplete. In a previous microsatellite‐based linkage scan of 1,233 PC families, we identified suggestive evidence for linkage (i.e., LOD ≥ 1.86) at 5q12, 15q11, 17q21, 22q12, and two loci on 8p, with additional regions implicated in subsets of families defined by age at diagnosis, disease aggressiveness, or number of affected members. METHODS In an attempt to replicate these findings and increase linkage resolution, we used the Illumina 6000 SNP linkage panel to perform a genome‐wide linkage scan of an independent set of 762 multiplex PC families, collected by 11 International Consortium for Prostate Cancer Genetics (ICPCG) groups. RESULTS Of the regions identified previously, modest evidence of replication was observed only on the short arm of chromosome 8, where HLOD scores of 1.63 and 3.60 were observed in the complete set of families and families with young average age at diagnosis, respectively. The most significant linkage signals found in the complete set of families were observed across a broad, 37 cM interval on 4q13–25, with LOD scores ranging from 2.02 to 2.62, increasing to 4.50 in families with older average age at diagnosis. In families with multiple cases presenting with more aggressive disease, LOD scores over 3.0 were observed at 8q24 in the vicinity of previously identified common PC risk variants, as well as MYC , an important gene in PC biology. CONCLUSIONS These results will be useful in prioritizing future susceptibility gene discovery efforts in this common cancer. MODEL STUDY AND APPLICATION ON SURFACE PRESSURE MEASUREMENT OF STRUCTURE WATER ENTRY

    No full text
There will be different loads along the structure surface when it impacts on the water, which has an important effect on the safety of the capsule structure and the people inside. So the research of water impact has a practical significance in the field of aerospace and military. Base on wedge and arc body model, the test of free fall on the water has been investigated on different situations. Firstly the parameter of PVDF is calibrated in the static and dynamic state, using which the distribution of surface pressure is obtained. Then different situations of the experiment are simulated by LS-DYNA and the test pressures are proved further. The pressures are analyzed by different factors. Finally base on the similarity criteria, the impact response of real aircraft structure are obtained by the test data, which has a valuable reference for the design of structure
