This thesis explores process-forward visual arts education in the Greater Providence arts education community. The researcher conducted interviews with arts educators as well as administrators working within organizations guided by a “process-forward” philosophy. Interview transcripts are analyzed to identify any emergent themes of intended and actualized student learning outcomes as well as other commonalities which exist among the interviewed organizations. This investigation found that, within these organizations, multiple, significant forms of student learning outcomes were identified that extended well beyond any particular aesthetic merits of the artistic products created by students The author calls, in this thesis, for a recalibration and expansion of existing methods of assessing visual arts learning in order to take greater account of process-forward learning outcomes, which will, the author argues, provide a much more comprehensive view of what students gain through engaging in the visual arts

Correlation between Grafting Density and Confined Crystallization Behavior of Poly(ethylene glycol) Grafted to Silica

The interfacial interactions of polymer-nanoparticles have dramatical effects on the crystallization behavior of grafted polymers. In this study, methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG) (molecular weights 750, 2000 and 4000 g mol−1) was grafted onto amino-modified nanosized silica (SiO2-NH2) by the “grafting to” method. The effects of the grafting density and molecular weight on the confined crystallization of grafted MPEG (MPEG-g-SiO2) were systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). It was found that confinement effects are stronger when lower molecular weights of grafted MPEG are employed. These grafted MPEG chains are more difficult to stretch out on SiO2-NH2 surfaces than when they are free in the bulk polymer. Both crystallization temperature (Tc) and crystallinity of grafted MPEG chains decrease with reductions of grafting density. Additionally, covalent bonding effects and interfacial interaction confinement effects are strengthened by the decrease in grafting density, leading to an increase in decomposition temperature and to the disappearance of the self-nucleation Domain (i.e., Domain II), when self-nucleation experiments are performed by DSC. Overall isothermal crystallization kinetics was studied by DSC and the results were analyzed with the Avrami equation. An Avrami index of n≈3 was obtained for neat MPEG (indicating that instantaneous spherulites are formed). However, in the case of MPEG-g-SiO2 with the lowest grafting density, the Avrami index of (n) was less than 1 (first order kinetics or lower), indicating that nucleation is the determining factor of the overall crystallization kinetics, a signature for confined crystallization. At the same time, the crystallization from the melt for this MPEG-g-SiO2 with the lowest grafting density occurs at Tc ≈-30 ºC, a temperature close to the glass transition temperature (Tg) of MPEG, indicating that this confined MPEG crystallizes from homogeneous nuclei. This project was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (21574141) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (2017YFE0117800). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 100 loci associated with schizophrenia. Most of these studies test genetic variants for association one at a time. In this study, we performed GWAS of the molecular genetics of schizophrenia (MGS) dataset with 5334 subjects using multivariate Bayesian variable selection (BVS) method Posterior Inference via Model Averaging and Subset Selection (piMASS) and compared our results with the previous univariate analysis of the MGS dataset. We showed that piMASS can improve the power of detecting schizophrenia-associated SNPs, potentially leading to new discoveries from existing data without increasing the sample size. We tested SNPs in groups to allow for local additive effects and used permutation test to determine statistical significance in order to compare our results with univariate method. The previous univariate analysis of the MGS dataset revealed no genome-wide significant loci. Using the same dataset, we identified a single region that exceeded the genome-wide significance. The result was replicated using an independent Swedish Schizophrenia Case–Control Study (SSCCS) dataset. Based on the SZGR 2.0 database we found 63 SNPs from the best performing regions that are mapped to 27 genes known to be associated with schizophrenia. Overall, we demonstrated that piMASS could discover association signals that otherwise would need a much larger sample size. Our study has important implication that reanalyzing published datasets with BVS methods like piMASS might have more power to discover new risk variants for many diseases without new sample collection, ascertainment, and genotyping

For intelligent DC distributed power systems, data communication plays a vital role in system control and device monitoring. To achieve communication in a cost effective way, power/signal dual modulation (PSDM), a method that integrates data transmission with power conversion, can be utilized. In this paper, an improved PSDM method using phase shift full bridge (PSFB) converter is proposed. This method introduces a phase control based freedom in the conventional PSFB control loop to realize communication using the same power conversion circuit. In this way, decoupled data modulation and power conversion are realized without extra wiring and coupling units, and thus the system structure is simplified. More importantly, the signal intensity can be regulated by the proposed perturbation depth, and so this method can adapt to different operating conditions. Application of the proposed method to a DC distributed power system composed of several PSFB converters is discussed. A 2kW prototype system with an embedded 5kbps communication link has been implemented, and the effectiveness of the method is verified by experimental results

Switched mode power supplies (SMPSs) are essential components in many applications, and electromagnetic interference is an important consideration in the SMPS design. Spread spectrum based PWM strategies have been used in SMPS designs to reduce the switching harmonics. This paper proposes a novel method to integrate a communication function into spread spectrum based PWM strategy without extra hardware costs. Direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) and phase shift keying (PSK) data modulation are employed to the PWM of the SMPS, so that it has reduced switching harmonics and the input and output power line voltage ripples contain data. A data demodulation algorithm has been developed for receivers, and code division multiple access (CDMA) concept is employed as communication method for a system with multiple SMPSs. The proposed method has been implemented in both Buck and Boost converters. The experimental results validated the proposed DSSS based PWM strategy for both harmonic reduction and communication

Embedding Power Line Communication in Photovoltaic Optimizer by Modulating Data in Power Control Loop

In Photovoltaic (PV) system, dc-dc power optimizer (DCPO) is an option to maximize output power. At the same time, data links among DCPOs are often required for system monitoring and controlling. This paper proposes a novel power line communication (PLC) method for the DCPOs, in which the data of a DCPO is modulated into the control loop of power converter, and then transmitted through the series-connected dc power line to other DCPOs. In the process of communication, differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation and discrete Fourier transformation (DFT) demodulation are employed. To analyze the quality of communication, the communication model of the system is built, based on small-signal model. Furthermore, the noises of the system, including switching, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), are discussed and measured to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). At last, an experimental system including 6 DCPOs is established and tested, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method

Zero-voltage-switching buck converter with low-voltage stress using coupled inductor

This study presents a new zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) buck converter. The proposed converter utilises a coupled inductor to implement the output filter inductor as well as the auxiliary inductor which is commonly employed to realise ZVS for switches. Additional magnetic core for the auxiliary inductor in traditional ZVS converters is eliminated and hence reduced cost is achieved. Moreover, thanks to the series connection between the input and output, the switch voltage stress in the steady state is reduced and thus the ZVS operation can be easier achieved. Then the leakage inductor current circulating in the auxiliary switch is decreased, contributing to reduced conduction losses. In particular, low-voltage rating devices with low on-state resistance can be adopted to further improve efficiency in applications with non-zero output voltage all the time, such as the battery charger. Furthermore, the reverse-recovery problem of the diode is significantly alleviated by the leakage inductor of coupled inductor. In the study, operation principle and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are presented in detail. Meanwhile, design considerations are given to obtain circuit parameters. Finally, simulations and experiments on a 200 W prototype circuit validate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed converter

The energy internet concept has been considered as a new development stage of the Smart Grid, which aims to increase the energy transmission efficiency and optimise the energy dispatching in time and space. Energy router is a core device in the energy internet and it connects all the devices together into a net structure and manages power flows among them. The research work presented in this paper described the energy router’s structure and function expectations from the network perspective, and improved the existing energy router design. Open-shortest-path first (OSPF) protocol and virtual circuit switching mode are referenced from the Internet in the energy local area network (e-LAN) design. This paper proposed a design of an energy routing algorithm based on graph theory in an e-LAN. A lowest-cost routing selection algorithm is designed according to the features of power transmission, and a source selection and routing design algorithm is proposed for very heavy load conditions. Both algorithms have been verified by case analyses
