    A simple prescription for simulating and characterizing gravitational arcs

    Simple models of gravitational arcs are crucial to simulate large samples of these objects with full control of the input parameters. These models also provide crude and automated estimates of the shape and structure of the arcs, which are necessary when trying to detect and characterize these objects on massive wide area imaging surveys. We here present and explore the ArcEllipse, a simple prescription to create objects with shape similar to gravitational arcs. We also present PaintArcs, which is a code that couples this geometrical form with a brightness distribution and adds the resulting object to images. Finally, we introduce ArcFitting, which is a tool that fits ArcEllipses to images of real gravitational arcs. We validate this fitting technique using simulated arcs and apply it to CFHTLS and HST images of tangential arcs around clusters of galaxies. Our simple ArcEllipse model for the arc, associated to a S\'ersic profile for the source, recovers the total signal in real images typically within 10%-30%. The ArcEllipse+S\'ersic models also automatically recover visual estimates of length-to-width ratios of real arcs. Residual maps between data and model images reveal the incidence of arc substructure. They may thus be used as a diagnostic for arcs formed by the merging of multiple images. The incidence of these substructures is the main factor preventing ArcEllipse models from accurately describing real lensed systems.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Heart defibrillation : relationship between pacing threshold and defibrillation probability

    Considering the clinical importance of the ventricular fibrillation and that the most used therapy to reverse it has a critical side effect on the cardiac tissue, it is desirable to optimize defibrillation parameters to increase its efficiency. In this study, we investigated the influence of stimuli duration on the relationship between pacing threshold and defibrillation probability. We found out that 0.5-ms-long pulses had a lower ratio of defibrillation probability to the pacing threshold, although the higher the pulse duration the lower is the electric field intensity required to defibrillate the hearts. The appropriate choice of defibrillatory shock parameters is able to increase the efficiency of the defibrillation improving the survival chances after the occurrence of a severe arrhythmia.     Primeros reportes de Myotis riparius (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) en los altos Andes del sur del Ecuador

    The Vespertilionidae family is widely distributed in South America. In Ecuador, there are 20 species including Myotis riparius. The species has been recorded between 10 to 1240 m a.s.l. on the both eastern and western sides of the Andes cordillera. In this work we reported two new localities for southern Ecuador which include the highest records for the species and increasing in 1077 m the limit elevation previously known in Ecuador.La familia Vespertilionidae está ampliamente distribuida en América del Sur. En Ecuador habitan 20 especies incluyendo a Myotis riparius. Esta especie ha sido registrada entre 10 y 1240 metros de elevación en las estribaciones de la cordillera de los Andes. En este trabajo reportamos dos nuevas localidades para el sur del Ecuador las cuales incluyen los registros de mayor elevación para la especie e incrementan 1077 metros el límite altitudinal conocido en Ecuador

    INTERREG POCTEP GEO-FPI-(Ref. 0052-GEO-FPI-5-E) ALT20-03-0145-FEDER-000025 UID/CTM/50025/2019 Project (PA 18111)Mining activity in Algares (Aljustrel Mine, Portuguese sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, IPB) stems prior to Roman times. As the orebody is vertical and relatively thin, mining was carried out mainly along underground adits (galleries). Nowadays, the deposit is considered exhausted and the area is being rehabilitated for a different use. The Algares +30 level adit intersects two volcanic units of the IPB Volcano-Sedimentary Complex. The massive sulphide and related stockwork zone are hosted by the Mine Tuff volcanic unit and are exposed in the walls of the gallery, showing intense hydrothermal alteration. Along the mine adit, the geological sequence is affected by strong oxidation and supergene alteration, giving rise to the formation of secondary minerals through the oxidation of the sulphides. The most common minerals found were melanterite (FeSO4·7H2O) and chalcanthite (CuSO4·5H2O), forming essentially massive or crystalline aggregates, ranging from greenish to bluish colours. Melanterite from the walls revealed to be Cu-rich by opposition to that from stalactites/stalagmites formed below the old ore storage silo revealing the low-copper-grade ores exploited underground. The mineralogy of the efflorescent salts was used to ascertain the processes involved in their formation, and moreover, the inventory of minerals is presented, as well as their principal characteristics.publishersversionpublishe

    Choosing the most effective pattern classification model under learning-time constraint

However, methodologies to compare classifiers usually do not take into account the learning-time constraints required by applications. This work presents a methodology to compare classifiers with respect to their ability to learn from classification errors on a large learning set, within a given time limit. Faster techniques may acquire more training samples, but only when they are more effective will they achieve higher performance on unseen testing sets.     Nuevo registro de Promops centralis (Chiroptera: Molossidae) en el suroriente del Ecuador

    New record of Promops centralis  (Chiroptera:Molossidae) in south-eastern Ecuador Abstract: Promops centralis (Chiroptera: Molossidae) is reported for the first time in south-eastern Ecuador, province of Morona Santiago. In 1998, an adult female was collected at Limón-Indanza. The specimen was donated to the mastozoology collection of the Museo de Zoología, Universidad del Azuay (MZUA) in 2016. The specimen was collected in secondary low montane forest on the eastearn subtropical zoogeographic region. This record is a new locality for P. centralis, extending the species known distribution in Ecuador and providing its highest elevation record. Keywords. Resumen: Promops centralis (Chiroptera:Molossidae) es reportado por primera vez en el suroriente del Ecuador, provincia de Morona Santiago. En 1998, una hembra adulta fue colectada en la localidad de Limón-Indanza. El espécimen fue donado a la colección de mastozoología del Museo de Zoología de la Universidad del Azuay (MZUA) en 2016. El espécimen fue colectado en bosque montano bajo secundario en el piso zoogeográfico subtropical oriental. Este registro es una nueva localidad para P. centralis, que extiende la distribución conocida de la especie en Ecuador y provee la localidad de mayor elevación. Palabras Clave. Minerals from the halotrichite group were identified on the efflorescent salts, typically white fine-acicular crystals but also on aggregates with dark orange/brownish colour. Mineral characterization was performed using several methods and analytical techniques (XRD, XRF-WDS, SEM-EDS, DTA-TG), and the chemical formulas were calculated maintaining the ratio A:B∼= 1:2 in accordance with the general formula of the halotrichite group, AB2 (SO4 )4·22H2 O. This methodology allowed the assignment of the orange colour to the presence of trivalent iron on iron-rich pickeringite in partial substitution of aluminium.publishersversionpublishe
