    Extragalactic Point Source Search in Five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz Maps

    We present the results of an extragalactic point source search using the five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz (Q-, V- and W-band) temperature maps. This work is an extension of our point source search in the WMAP maps applying a CMB-free technique. An internal linear combination (ILC) map has been formed from the three-band maps, with the weights chosen to remove the CMB anisotropy signal as well as to favor a selection of flat-spectrum sources. We find 381 sources at the > 5 sigma level outside the WMAP point source detection mask in the ILC map, among which 89 are "new" (i.e., not present in the WMAP catalog). Source fluxes have been calculated and corrected for the Eddington bias. We have solidly identified 367 (96.3%) of our sources. The 1 sigma positional uncertainty is estimated to be 2'. The 14 unidentified sources could be either extended radio structure or obscured by Galactic emission. We have also applied the same detection process on simulated maps and found 364+/-21 detections on average.     Biparametric Adaptive Filter: detection of compact sources in complex microwave backgrounds

    In this article we consider the detection of compact sources in maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) following the philosophy behind the Mexican Hat Wavelet Family (MHWn) of linear filters. We present a new analytical filter, the Biparametric Adaptive Filter (BAF), that is able to adapt itself to the statistical properties of the background as well as to the profile of the compact sources, maximizing the amplification and improving the detection process. We have tested the performance of this filter using realistic simulations of the microwave sky between 30 and 857 GHz as observed by the Planck satellite, where complex backgrounds can be found. We demonstrate that doing a local analysis on flat patches allows one to find a combination of the optimal scale of the filter R and the index of the filter g that will produce a global maximum in the amplification, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the detected sources in the filtered map and improving the total number of detections above a threshold. We conclude that the new filter is able to improve the overall performance of the MHW2, increasing the SNR of the detections and, therefore, the number of detections above a 5 sigma threshold. The improvement of the new filter in terms of SNR is particularly important in the vicinity of the galactic plane and in the presence of strong galactic emission. Finally, we compare the sources detected by each method and find that the new filter is able to detect more new sources than the MHW2 at all frequencies and in clean regions of the sky. The BAF is also less affected by spurious detections, associated to compact structures in the vicinity of the galactic plane.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures and 3 tables.     Statistical properties of extragalactic sources in the New Extragalactic WMAP Point Source (NEWPS) catalogue

    We present results on spectral index distributions, number counts, redshift distribution and other general statistical properties of extragalactic point sources in the NEWPS5 sample L\'opez-Caniego et al. (2007). The flux calibrations at all the WMAP channels have been reassessed both by comparison with ground based observations and through estimates of the effective beam areas. The two methods yield consistent statistical correction factors. A search of the NED has yielded optical identifications for 89% of sources in the complete sub-sample of 252 sources with S/N>5 and S>1.1 Jy at 23 GHz; 5 sources turned out to be Galactic and were removed. The NED also yielded redshifts for 92% of the extragalactic sources at |b|>10deg. Their distribution was compared with model predictions; the agreement is generally good but a possible discrepancy is noted. Using the 5 GHz fluxes from the GB6 or PMN surveys, we find that 76% of the 191 extragalactic sources with S_23GHz>1.3,Jy can be classified as flat-spectrum sources between 5 and 23 GHz. A spectral steepening is observed at higher frequencies: only 59% of our sources are still flat-spectrum sources between 23 and 61 GHz and the average spectral indexes steepen from = 0.01\pm 0.03 to = 0.37\pm 0.03. We think, however, that the difference may be due to a selection effect. The source number counts have a close to Euclidean slope and are in good agreement with the predictions of the cosmological evolution model by De Zotti et al. (2005). The observed spectral index distributions were exploited to get model-independent extrapolations of counts to higher frequencies. The risks of such operations are discussed and reasons of discrepancies with other recent estimates are clarified.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Radio emission from the high-mass X-ray binary BP Cru: first detection

    BP Cru is a well known high-mass X-ray binary composed of a late B hypergiant (Wray 977) and a neutron star, also observed as the X-ray pulsar GX 301-2. No information about emission from BP Cru in other bands than X-rays and optical has been reported to date in the literature, though massive X-ray binaries containing black holes can have radio emission from a jet. In order to assess the presence of a radio jet, we searched for radio emission towards BP Cru using the Australia Compact Array Telescope during a survey for radio emission from Be/X-ray transients. We probed the 41.5d orbit of BP Cru with the Australia Telescope Compact Array not only close to periastron but also close to apastron. BP Cru was clearly detected in our data on 4, possibly 6, of 12 occasions at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. Our data suggest that the spectral index of the radio emission is modulated either by the X-ray flux or the orbital phase of the system. We propose that the radio emission of BP Cru probably arises from two components: a persistent component, coming from the mass donor Wray 977, and a periodic component connected to the accretion onto the neutron star, possibly coming from a (weak and short lived) jet.Comment: 2 figures, accepted for publication in A+A letter

    Two Jupiter-Mass Planets Orbiting HD 154672 and HD 205739

    We report the detection of the first two planets from the N2K Doppler planet search program at the Magellan telescopes. The first planet has a mass of M sin i = 4.96 M_Jup and is orbiting the G3 IV star HD154672 with an orbital period of 163.9 days. The second planet is orbiting the F7 V star HD205739 with an orbital period of 279.8 days and has a mass of M sin i = 1.37 M_Jup. Both planets are in eccentric orbits, with eccentricities e = 0.61 and e = 0.27, respectively. Both stars are metal rich and appear to be chromospherically inactive, based on inspection of their Ca II H and K lines. Finally, the best Keplerian model fit to HD205739b shows a trend of 0.0649 m/s/day, suggesting the presence of an additional outer body in that system.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication on A

    Polarization of the WMAP Point Sources

    The detection of polarized sources in the WMAP 5-year data is a very difficult task. The maps are dominated by instrumental noise and only a handful of sources show up as clear peaks in the Q and U maps. Optimal linear filters applied at the position of known bright sources detect with a high level of significance a polarized flux P from many more sources, but estimates of P are liable to biases. Using a new technique, named the "filtered fusion technique", we have detected in polarization, with a significance level greater than 99.99% in at least one WMAP channel, 22 objects, 5 of which, however, do not have a plausible low radio frequency counterpart and are therefore doubtful. Estimated polarized fluxes P < 400 mJy at 23 GHz were found to be severely affected by the Eddington bias. The corresponding polarized flux limit for Planck/LFI at 30 GHz, obtained via realistic simulations, is 300 mJy. We have also obtained statistical estimates of, or upper limits to the mean polarization degrees of bright WMAP sources at 23, 33, 41, and 61 GHz, finding that they are of a few percent.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     A multifrequency method based on the Matched Multifilter for the detection of point sources in CMB maps

    In this work we deal with the problem of simultaneous multifrequency detection of extragalactic point sources in maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background. We apply a linear filtering technique that uses spatial information and the cross-power spectrum. To make this, we simulate realistic and non-realistic flat patches of the sky at two frequencies of Planck: 44 and 100 GHz. We filter to detect and estimate the point sources and compare this technique with the monofrequency matched filter in terms of completeness, reliability, flux and spectral index accuracy.     New insights on neutral binary representations for evolutionary optimization

    This paper studies a family of redundant binary representations NNg(l, k), which are based on the mathematical formulation of error control codes, in particular, on linear block codes, which are used to add redundancy and neutrality to the representations. The analysis of the properties of uniformity, connectivity, synonymity, locality and topology of the NNg(l, k) representations is presented, as well as the way an (1+1)-ES can be modeled using Markov chains and applied to NK fitness landscapes with adjacent neighborhood.The results show that it is possible to design synonymously redundant representations that allow an increase of the connectivity between phenotypes. For easy problems, synonymously NNg(l, k) representations, with high locality, and where it is not necessary to present high values of connectivity are the most suitable for an efficient evolutionary search. On the contrary, for difficult problems, NNg(l, k) representations with low locality, which present connectivity between intermediate to high and with intermediate values of synonymity are the best ones. These results allow to conclude that NNg(l, k) representations with better performance in NK fitness landscapes with adjacent neighborhood do not exhibit extreme values of any of the properties commonly considered in the literature of evolutionary computation. This conclusion is contrary to what one would expect when taking into account the literature recommendations. This may help understand the current difficulty to formulate redundant representations, which are proven to be successful in evolutionary computation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Quantitative Genetic Effects of Bottlenecks: Experimental Evidence from a Wild Plant Species, Nigella degenii

    Understanding the genetic consequences of changes in population size is fundamental in a variety of contexts, such as adaptation and conservation biology. In the study presented here, we have performed a replicated experiment with the plant Nigella degenii to explore the quantitative genetic effects of a single-founder bottleneck. In agreement with additive theory, the bottleneck reduced the mean (co)variance within lines and caused stochastic, line-specific changes in the genetic (co)variance structure. However, a significant portion of the (co)variance structure was conserved, and 2 characters—leaf and flower (sepal) size—turned out to be positively correlated in all data sets, indicating a potential for correlated evolution in these characters, even after a severe bottleneck. The hierarchical partitioning of genetic variance for flower size was in good agreement with predictions from additive theory, whereas the remaining characters showed an excess of within-line variance and a deficiency of among-line variance. The latter discrepancies were most likely a result of selection, given the small proportion of lines (23%) that remained viable until the end of the experiment. Our results suggest that bottlenecked populations of N. degenii generally have a lower adaptive potential than the ancestral population but also highlight the idiosyncratic nature of bottleneck effects

    The role of school enjoyment and connectedness in the association between depressive and externalising symptoms and academic attainment:Findings from a UK prospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Previous research on the relationship between children's depressive and externalising symptoms, experience of school, and academic attainment is inconclusive. The aims of this study were (i) to test bidirectional associations between children's school experience and depressive and externalising symptoms at age 10-11 and 13-14, (ii) to ascertain whether school experience age 13-14 is associated with academic attainment age 16, and (iii) to test whether school experience mediates the relationship between depressive or externalising symptoms and attainment. METHODS: Data was used from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (n=6,409). A cross-lagged model was used to investigate bidirectional associations between school experience (enjoyment and connectedness) and depression and externalising at age 10-11 and 13-14. The same framework was used to test if school experience aged 13-14 mediated associations of depressive and externalising symptoms with later attainment. RESULTS: Depressive and externalising symptoms at 10-11 were negatively associated with school connectedness (depressive: standardised β=-0.06, CI: -0.11, 0.01; externalizing: β=-0.13, CI: -0.17, -0.08), and school enjoyment at 13-14 (depressive β=-0.04, -0.08, 0.03; externalising: β=-0.08, CI: -0.13, -0.03). School enjoyment at 13-14 was positively associated with attainment at 16 (β=0.10, CI: 0.04, 0.15), and partially mediated associations between depressive and externalising symptoms at 10-11 and attainment at 16 (depressive: proportion mediated 2.2%, CI: -1.5, 5.9; externalising: proportion mediated; 4.7%, CI: 0.7, 10.1,). LIMITATIONS: Results may be subject to residual confounding. CONCLUSIONS: School enjoyment is a potentially modifiable risk factor that may affect educational attainment of adolescents with depressive or externalising symptoms
