    The thesis aims to consider some aspects of British theology in the first half of the twentieth century through the thinking of five representative figures on the theme of grace. The first two chapters give a broad historical introduction (I) and an outline of theological thinking in Britain during the period (II).James Denney (III) is chosen as a representative of an 'orthodox' Protestant approach. Arguing chiefly from the Pauline epistles he defends a 'substitutionary' view of atonement. In contrast Hastings Rashdall (IV) working largely from a historical survey and trying to present a moral view acceptable to modern man criticised 'substitutionary' thinking and advocated an 'Abelardian' or 'moral influence' view. This chapter concludes with a discussion of the two views so far considered. John Oman (v) criticises traditional ideas of grace as omnipotent power and advances the view of grace as 'fatherly persuasion' which is always available. This rests on his view of the relation between the Natural and the Supernatural. Oliver Quick (VI) is chosen for his more Catholic approach. He understands the work of Christ under the 'sacrificial' model and has a richer view of worship and sacraments underlying this is the idea of a sacramental universe. Finally, Donald Baillie (VII) is seen as a mediating figure. Here the stress is more on the experience of grace, and the use of the 'paradox of g race' as an approach to Christology is considered. The conclusion (VIII) suggests that there have been two traditional approaches to the understanding of grace, the Protestant and the Catholic, but that a third has emerged which begins from creation rather than redemption. As far as British theology is concerned it is chiefly represented by Oman. It is widely influential but its influence is not always recognised

    Algon: a framework for supporting comparison of distributed algorithm performance

    Programmers often need to use distributed algorithms to add non-functional behaviour such as mutual exclusion, deadlock detection and termination, to a distributed application. They find the selection and implementation of these algorithms daunting. Consequently, they have no idea which algorithm will be best for their particular application. To address this difficulty the Algon framework provides a set of pre-coded distributed algorithms for programmers to choose from, and provides a special performance display tool to support choice between algorithms. The performance tool is discussed. The developer of a distributed application will be able to observe the performance of each of the available algorithms according to a set of of widely accepted and easily-understandable performance metrics and compare and contrast the behaviour of the algorithms to support an informed choice. The strength of the Algon framework is that it does not require a working knowledge of algorithmic theory or functionality in order for the developer to use the algorithms

    We present the results of a multi-frequency study of the inversion symmetric radio galaxy NGC326 based on Very Large Array observations at 1.4, 1.6, 4.8, 8.5 and 14.9 GHz. The morphological, spectral and polarization properties of this peculiar object are studied at different levels of spatial resolutions.     Separating the BL Lac and Cluster X-ray Emissions in Abell 689 with Chandra

    We present the results of a Chandra observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 689 (z=0.279). Abell 689 is one of the most luminous clusters detected in the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS), but was flagged as possibly including significant point source contamination. The small PSF of the Chandra telescope allows us to confirm this and separate the point source from the extended cluster X-ray emission. For the cluster we determine a bolometric luminosity of L_{bol}=(3.3+/-0.3)x10^{44} erg s-1 and a temperature of kT=5.1^{+2.2}_{-1.3} keV when including a physically motivated background model. We compare our measured luminosity for A689 to that quoted in the Rosat All Sky Survey (RASS) and find L_{0.1-2.4,keV}=2.8x10^{44} erg s-1, a value \sim10 times lower than the ROSAT measurement. Our analysis of the point source shows evidence for significant pileup, with a pile-up fraction of ~60%. SDSS spectra and HST images lead us to the conclusion that the point source within Abell 689 is a BL Lac object. Using radio and optical observations from the VLA and HST archives, we determine {\alpha}_{ro}=0.50, {\alpha}_{ox}=0.77 and {\alpha}_{rx}=0.58 for the BL Lac, which would classify it as being of 'High-energy peak BL Lac' (HBL) type. Spectra extracted of A689 show a hard X-ray excess at energies above 6 keV that we interpret as inverse Compton emission from aged electrons that may have been transported into the cluster from the BL Lac.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS in pres

    Discovery of a Jet-Like Structure at the High Redshift QSO CXOMP J084128.3+131107

    The Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) has discovered a jet-like structure associated with a newly recognized QSO at redshift z=1.866. The system was 9.4 arcmin off-axis during an observation of 3C 207. Although significantly distorted by the mirror PSF, we use both a raytrace and a nearby bright point source to show that the X-ray image must arise from some combination of point and extended sources, or else from a minimum of three distinct point sources. We favor the former situation, as three unrelated sources would have a small probability of occurring by chance in such a close alignment. We show that interpretation as a jet emitting X-rays via inverse Compton (IC) scattering on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is plausible. This would be a surprising and unique discovery of a radio-quiet QSO with an X-ray jet, since we have obtained upper limits of 100 microJy on the QSO emission at 8.46 GHz, and limits of 200 microJy for emission from the putative jet.Comment: 12 pages including 4 figures.     Conformational and thermodynamic hallmarks of DNA operator site specificity in the copper sensitive operon repressor from Streptomyces lividans

    Metal ion homeostasis in bacteria relies on metalloregulatory proteins to upregulate metal resistance genes and enable the organism to preclude metal toxicity. The copper sensitive operon repressor (CsoR) family is widely distributed in bacteria and controls the expression of copper efflux systems. CsoR operator sites consist of G-tract containing pseudopalindromes of which the mechanism of operator binding is poorly understood. Here, we use a structurally characterized CsoR from Streptomyces lividans (CsoRSl) together with three specific operator targets to reveal the salient features pertaining to the mechanism of DNA binding. We reveal that CsoRSl binds to its operator site through a 2-fold axis of symmetry centred on a conserved 5′-TAC/GTA-3′ inverted repeat. Operator recognition is stringently dependent not only on electropositive residues but also on a conserved polar glutamine residue. Thermodynamic and circular dichroic signatures of the CsoRSl-DNA interaction suggest selectivity towards the A-DNA-like topology of the G-tracts at the operator site. Such properties are enhanced on protein binding thus enabling the symmetrical binding of two CsoRSl tetramers. Finally, differential binding modes may exist in operator sites having more than one 5′-TAC/GTA-3′ inverted repeat with implications in vivo for a mechanism of modular control. © 2013 The Author(s)

    Economic evaluation protocol of a short, all-oral bedaquiline-containing regimen for the treatment of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis from the STREAM trial

    Introduction: A December 2019 WHO rapid communication recommended the use of 9-month all-oral regimens for treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Besides the clinical benefits, they are thought to be less costly than the injectable-containing regimens, for both the patient and the health system. STREAM is the first randomised controlled trial with an economical evaluation to compare all-oral and injectable-containing 9–11-month MDR-TB treatment regimens. Methods and analysis: Health system costs of delivering a 9-month injectable-containing regimen and a 9-month all-oral bedaquiline-containing regimen will be collected in Ethiopia, India, Moldova and Uganda, using ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ costing approaches. Patient costs will be collected using questionnaires that have been developed based on the STOP-TB questionnaire. The primary objective of the study is to estimate the cost utility of the two regimens, from a health system perspective. Secondary objectives: include estimating the cost utility from a societal perspective as well as evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the regimens, using both health system and societal perspectives. The effect measure for the cost–utility analysis will be the quality-adjusted life years (QALY), while the effect measure for the cost-effectiveness analysis will be the efficacy outcome from the clinical trial. Ethics and dissemination: The study has been evaluated and approved by the Ethics Advisory Group of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and also approved by ethics committees in all participating countries. All participants have provided written informed consent. The results of the economic evaluation will be published in a peer-reviewed journal
