    The effects of swing-leg retraction on running performance: analysis, simulation, and experiment

    Using simple running models, researchers have argued that swing-leg retraction can improve running robot performance. In this paper, we investigate whether this holds for a more realistic simulation model validated against a physical running robot. We find that swing-leg retraction can improve stability and disturbance rejection. Alternatively, swing-leg retraction can simultaneously reduce touchdown forces, slipping likelihood, and impact energy losses. Surprisingly, swing-leg retraction barely affected net energetic efficiency. The retraction rates at which these effects are the greatest are strongly model-dependent, suggesting that robot designers cannot always rely on simplified models to accurately predict such complex behaviors

    A machine learning approach to explore predictors of graft detachment following posterior lamellar keratoplasty:a nationwide registry study

    Machine learning can be used to explore the complex multifactorial patterns underlying postsurgical graft detachment after endothelial corneal transplantation surgery and to evaluate the marginal effect of various practice pattern modulations. We included all posterior lamellar keratoplasty procedures recorded in the Dutch Cornea Transplant Registry from 2015 through 2018 and collected the center-specific practice patterns using a questionnaire. All available data regarding the donor, recipient, surgery, and practice pattern, were coded into 91 factors that might be associated with the occurrence of a graft detachment. In this research, we used three machine learning methods; a regularized logistic regression (lasso), classification tree analysis (CTA), and random forest classification (RFC), to select the most predictive subset of variables for graft detachment. A total of 3647 transplants were included in our analysis and the overall prevalence of graft detachment was 9.9%. In an independent test set the area under the curve for the lasso, CTA, and RFC was 0.70, 0.65, and 0.72, respectively. Identified risk factors included: a Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty procedure, prior graft failure, and the use of sulfur hexafluoride gas. Factors with a reduced risk included: performing combined procedures, using pre-cut donor tissue, and a pre-operative laser iridotomy. These results can help surgeons to review their practice patterns and generate hypotheses for empirical research regarding the origins of graft detachments

    Phenotypic variation in Vietnamese osteogenesis imperfecta patients sharing a recessive P3H1 pathogenic variant

    Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a syndromic disorder of bone fragility with high variation in its clinical presentation. Equally variable is molecular aetiology; recessive forms are caused by approximately 20 different genes, many of which are directly implicated in collagen type I biosynthesis. Biallelic variants in prolyl 3-hydroxylase 1 (P3H1) are known to cause severe OI by affecting the competence of the prolyl 3-hydroxylation—cartilage associated protein—peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase B (P3H1-CRTAP-CyPB) complex, which acts on the Pro986 residue of collagen type I α 1 (COL1A1) and Pro707 collagen type I α 2 (COL1A2) chains. The investigation of an OI cohort of 146 patients in Vietnam identified 14 families with P3H1 variants. The c.1170+5G>C variant was found to be very prevalent (12/14) and accounted for 10.3% of the Vietnamese OI cohort. New P3H1 variants were also identified in this population. Interestingly, the c.1170+5G>C variants were found in families with the severe clinical Sillence types 2 and 3 but also the milder types 1 and 4. This is the first time that OI type 1 is reported in patients with P3H1 variants expanding the clinical spectrum. Patients with a homozygous c.1170+5G>C variant shared severe progressively deforming OI type 3: bowed long bones, deformities of ribcage, long phalanges and hands, bluish sclera, brachycephaly, and early intrauterine fractures. Although it remains unclear if the c.1170+5G>C variant constitutes a founder mutation in the Vietnamese population, its prevalence makes it valuable for the molecular diagnosis of OI in patients of the Kinh ethnicity. Our study provides insight into the clinical and genetic variation of P3H1-related OI in the Vietnamese population

    Aerodynamic investigations of ventilated brake discs.

    The heat dissipation and performance of a ventilated brake disc strongly depends on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flow through the rotor passages. The aim of this investigation was to provide an improved understanding of ventilated brake rotor flow phenomena, with a view to improving heat dissipation, as well as providing a measurement data set for validation of computational fluid dynamics methods. The flow fields at the exit of four different brake rotor geometries, rotated in free air, were measured using a five-hole pressure probe and a hot-wire anemometry system. The principal measurements were taken using two-component hot-wire techniques and were used to determine mean and unsteady flow characteristics at the exit of the brake rotors. Using phase-locked data processing, it was possible to reveal the spatial and temporal flow variation within individual rotor passages. The effects of disc geometry and rotational speed on the mean flow, passage turbulence intensity, and mass flow were determined. The rotor exit jet and wake flow were clearly observed as characterized by the passage geometry as well as definite regions of high and low turbulence. The aerodynamic flow characteristics were found to be reasonably independent of rotational speed but highly dependent upon rotor geometry

    This document presents the 2011 edition of the team Dutch Robotics from The Netherlands. Our team gathers three Dutch technical universities, namely Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Twente, and the commercial company Philips. We contribute an adult-size humanoid robot TUlip, which is designed based on theory of the limit cycle walking developed in our earlier research. The key of our theory is that stable periodic walking gaits can be achieved even without high-bandwidth robot position control. Our control approach is based on simultaneous position and force control. For accurate force control, we make use of the Series Elastic Actuation. The control software of TUlip is based on the Darmstadt’s RoboFrame, and it runs on a PC104 computer with Linux Xenomai. The vision system consists of two wide-angle cameras, each interfaced with a dedicated Blackfin processor running vision algorithms, and a wireless networking interface

    A low-carbohydrate diet may prevent end-stage renal failure in type 2 diabetes. A case report

    An obese patient with type 2 diabetes whose diet was changed from the recommended high-carbohydrate, low-fat type to a low-carbohydrate diet showed a significant reduction in bodyweight, improved glycemic control and a reversal of a six year long decline of renal function. The reversal of the renal function was likely caused by both improved glycemic control and elimination of the patient's obesity. Insulin treatment in type 2 diabetes patients usually leads to weight increase which may cause further injury to the kidney. Although other unknown metabolic mechanisms cannot be excluded, it is likely that the obesity caused by the combination of high-carbohydrate diet and insulin in this case contributed to the patient's deteriorating kidney function. In such patients, where control of bodyweight and hyperglycemia is vital, a trial with a low-carbohydrate diet may be appropriate to avoid the risk of adding obesity-associated renal failure to already failing kidneys
