    Historical development of the Regime Geometry Equations, Part-I

    The present study intended to review the historical development of the regime geometry equations proposed by many researchers since 1895. Kennedy started the search for the attributes of stable channels on the Upper Bari Doab Canal of Punjab in 1980-1984. The regime concept was presented by Lindley (1919) that later on Lacey (1930) modified to a set of most widely used regime relations. Later on, Blench (1941-1957), and Simons and Albertson (1960) presented their equations. This period is called ‘canal regime period’ because most of the research focused on canal design. The concept of regime was extended to river systems by Leopold and Maddock in 1953. In 1963, Henderson proposed some regime equations that can be applied for predicting canal and river geometry. This period was the transition from canal regime period to river regime period and from an empirical approach to analytical approach and is called as ‘Transitional Period’. Many other researchers written the information based on analytical approach, or a combination between analytical and empirical approaches, and more focused to river regime especially gravel bed river regime. This period is, called ‘River regime period’. Flow discharge, sediment size, and bed-load sediment are the three main factors that influence the geometry of alluvial channels. The hydraulic geometry relationships indicate that sediment size and bed-load sediment strongly influence the channel slope, moderately influence the flow velocity, and slightly influence the channel depth and the channel width. This study also shows that in terms of Shields parameter, the exponents of discharge, sediment size, and sediment transport are dependent on the relative submergence (D/d50)

    Fresh Records on Water Quality and Ichthyodiversity of River Swat at Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

    Abstract.-A study on the fish fauna and water quality parameters of River Swat at Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan was conducted, with an aim to determine fresh records of water quality variables and fish fauna after heavy floods of July, 2010 in the province. For fish distribution a 35 km belt of the river was explored for four months and every effort was made to collect the fish specimen by any legal mean. During this study the mean values recorded for physico-chemical parameters were water temperature 19.8°C, pH 7.6, dissolved oxygen 9.65 mg/l, electrical conductivity 199.47 µS/cm, TDS 127.66 mg/l, TSS 93.78 mg/l, total hardness 118.75 mg/l, calcium hardness 75 mg/l, magnesium hardness 43.75 mg/l, sodium 5.325 mg/l, potassium 3.175 mg/l, total alkalinity 97 mg/l, chloride 15.3 mg/l and nitrite 0.0092 mg/l. All these values were within the limits prescribed by the standard methods for the examination of water, sewage and industrial wastes. In the present study a total of 38 fish species belonging to; 6 orders, 9 families and 24 genera were recorded. Cyprinidae was the richest family and was represented by 20 species, Nemacheilidae by 4, Sisoridae by 6, Channidae and Schilbidae by 2, Mastacembelidae, Schilbidae, Belonidae and Chandidae by single species.     Impact of Length and Percent Dosage of Recycled Steel Fibers on the Mechanical Properties of Concrete

    The global rapid increase in waste tyres accumulation, as well as the looming social and environmental concerns, have become major threats in recent times. The use of Recycled Steel Fiber (RSF) extracted from waste tyres in fiber reinforced concrete can be of great profitable engineering applications however the choice of suitable length and volume fractions of RSF is presently the key challenge that requires research exploration. The present experimental work aims at investigating the influence of varying lengths (7.62 and 10.16 cm) and dosages (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4%) of RSF on the various mechanical properties and durability of concrete. Test results revealed that the varying lengths and dosages of RSF significantly affect the mechanical properties of concrete. The improvements in the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of RSF reinforced concrete observed were about 26, 70, and 63%, respectively. Moreover, the RSF reinforced concrete showed an increase of about 20 and 15% in the yield load and ultimate load-carrying capacity, respectively. The durability test results showed a greater loss in compressive strength and modulus of elasticity and a smaller loss in concrete mass of SFRC. Based on the experimental findings of this study, the optimum dosages of RSF as 2.5 and 2% for the lengths 7.62 and 10.16 cm lengths, respectively are recommended for production of structural concrete. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091750 Full Text: PD

    Effect of Ascorbic Acid on the Wilting and Resistance of Capsicum Annum L. Plant

    The change from reversible to permanent wilting in whole red pepper(Capsicum annum) followed by a very harsh salt stress of root exposure to 200 mM  solution of NaCl.It was noticed that a seed or seedling present in saline soil was wilted very quickly, but if replaced to non-saline soil within 6 hours then seed start recovery however if the duration is increase and it reaches to 9 hour, then the salt stress make it plastic i-e remained wilt and died but the addition of antioxidant (0.5mM ascorbic acid) to the root medium and during at the time when the plant is in salt stress condition, it recover the stress almost 50% of wilted seedling others solution which containing organic solution they does not effective like anti-oxidants (vitamin C), The salt severely damage the root, stem and leaves by accumulation in them.     The Effects of Osmosis and Thermo-Priming on Salinity Stress Tolerance in Vigna radiata L.

    A plant’s response to osmotic stress is a complex phenomenon that causes many abnormal symptoms due to limitations in growth and development or even the loss of yield. The current research aimed to analyze the agronomical, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms accompanying the acquisition of salt resistance in the Vigna radiata L. variety ‘Ramzan’ using seed osmo- and thermopriming in the presence of PEG-4000 and 4 °C under induced salinity stresses of 100 and 150 mM NaCl. Seeds were collected from CCRI, Nowshera, and sowing was undertaken in triplicate at the Department of Botany, Peshawar University, during the 2018–2019 growing season. Rhizospheric soil pH (6.0), E.C (2.41 ds/m), field capacity, and moisture content level were estimated in the present study. We observed from the estimated results that the agronomic characteristics, i.e., shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight in T9 (4oC + 150 mM NaCl), root fresh weight and root dry weight in T4 (PEG + 100 mM NaCl), shoot moisture content in T5 (PEG + 100 mM NaCl), and root moisture content in T6 (PEG + 150 mM NaCl) were the highest, followed by the lowest in T1 (both shoot and root fresh weights) and T2 (shoot and root dry weights). Similarly, the shoot moisture content was the maximum in T5 and the minimum in T6, and root moisture was the highest in T6. We observed from the estimated results that agronomical parameters including dry masses (T4, T6, T4), leaf area index, germination index, leaf area, total biomass, seed vigor index under treatment T9, and relative water content and water use efficiency during T5 and T6 were the highest. Plant physiological traits such as proline, SOD enhanced by T1, carotenoids in treatment T2, and chlorophyll and protein levels were the highest under treatment T4, whereas sugar and POD were highest under treatments T7 and T8. The principal component analysis enclosed 63.75% of the total variation among all biological components. These estimated results confirmed the positive resistance by Vigna radiata during osmopriming (PEG) and thermopriming (4 °C) on most of the features with great tolerance under a low-saline treatment such as T4 (PEG), T5 (PEG + 100 mM NaCl), T7 (4 °C), and T8 (4 °C + 100 mM NaCl), while it was susceptible in the case of T6 (PEG + 150 mM NaCl) and T9 (4 °C + 150 mM NaCl) to high salt application. We found that the constraining impact of several priming techniques improved low salinity, which was regarded as economically inexpensive and initiated numerous metabolic processes in plants, hence decreasing germination time. The current study will have major applications for combatting the salinity problem induced by climate change in Pakistan

    Assessing the Formal and Informal Waste Recycling Business Processes through a Stakeholders Lens in Pakistan

    With this study, we aim to assess integration possibilities of formal and informal waste management approaches in a low-income country context by using recycling as a tool towards sustainability. Using a holistic approach, this study examines both formal and informal aspects of recycling value chains through a stakeholder lens. Pakistan is far from being a circular economy, as evident from the dismal levels of municipal solid waste collection and recycling. This problem calls for the effective integration of formal and informal recycling business processes to fill the void. With this study, we seek to assess various aspects of formal and informal waste recycling in Pakistan through an inductive qualitative research design by examining the case of one of the most populous cities, Lahore, in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Equal representation to various stakeholders is accorded, with 25 interviews each with managers of private companies, public companies, waste pickers and scrap dealers in the target area. The study highlights that recycling sector in Pakistan is completely informal and unregulated with no or little support available due to a lack of funds and systematic planning. The empirical evidence suggests that the formal sector lacks the capacity for proper waste disposal of total waste generated. The recycling aspects are left to informal sector stakeholders who improvise to extract value from MSW in an entrepreneurial manner. The formal sector holds a bias towards informal stakeholders due to the fact that their work also serves as a theft bargain and resale platform under the guise of waste collection and recycling. The study highlights the most and least sought after recyclables, identifies gray channel markets of spare parts, metal recycling and counterfeit products, and practices of adulteration in the target area. This study recommends as a policy input, to overcome bias towards the informal sector, the creation of a central recycling commission to overlook and regulate the affairs of hitherto unregulated and informal municipal solid waste and recycling value chains

    Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis and microbiome profile of patients in a referral gastrointestinal diseases centre in the Sudan

    Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) causes Johne’s disease in animals with zoonotic potential; it has been linked to many chronic diseases in humans, especially gastrointestinal diseases (GID). MAP has been extensively studied in Europe and America, but little reports were published from Africa. Sudan is a unique country with close contact between humans and livestock. Despite such interaction, the one health concept is neglected in dealing with cases of humans with GID. In this study, patients admitted to the reference GID hospital in the Sudan over a period of 8 months were screened for presence of MAP in their faeces or colonic biopsies. A total of 86 patients were recruited for this study, but only 67 were screened for MAP, as 19 did not provide the necessary samples for analysis. Both real-time PCR and culture were used to detect MAP in the collected samples and the microbial diversity in patients´ faecal samples was investigated using 16S rDNA nanopore sequencing. In total, 27 (40.3%) patients were MAP positive: they were 15 males and 12 females, of ages between 21 and 80 years. Logistic regression analysis revealed no statistical significance for all tested variables in MAP positive patients (occupation, gender, contact with animal, milk consumption, chronic disease, etc.). A unique microbiome profile of MAP-positive patients in comparison to MAP-negative was found. These findings suggest that a considerable proportion of the population could be MAP infected or carriers. Therefore, increase awareness at community level is urgently needed to decrease the risk of MAP at human/animal interface. This study represents the first report of MAP in humans in the Sudan; nevertheless, a better view of the situation of MAP in humans in the country requires a larger study including patients with other conditions.Additional co-authors: Ahmad Amanzada, Kamal H.     Effect of early tranexamic acid administration on mortality, hysterectomy, and other morbidities in women with post-partum haemorrhage (WOMAN): an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Early administration of tranexamic acid reduces deaths due to bleeding in trauma patients. We aimed to assess the effects of early administration of tranexamic acid on death, hysterectomy, and other relevant outcomes in women with post-partum haemorrhage. Methods In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we recruited women aged 16 years and older with a clinical diagnosis of post-partum haemorrhage after a vaginal birth or caesarean section from 193 hospitals in 21 countries. We randomly assigned women to receive either 1 g intravenous tranexamic acid or matching placebo in addition to usual care. If bleeding continued after 30 min, or stopped and restarted within 24 h of the first dose, a second dose of 1 g of tranexamic acid or placebo could be given. Patients were assigned by selection of a numbered treatment pack from a box containing eight numbered packs that were identical apart from the pack number. Participants, care givers, and those assessing outcomes were masked to allocation. We originally planned to enrol 15 000 women with a composite primary endpoint of death from all-causes or hysterectomy within 42 days of giving birth. However, during the trial it became apparent that the decision to conduct a hysterectomy was often made at the same time as randomisation. Although tranexamic acid could influence the risk of death in these cases, it could not affect the risk of hysterectomy. We therefore increased the sample size from 15 000 to 20 000 women in order to estimate the effect of tranexamic acid on the risk of death from post-partum haemorrhage. All analyses were done on an intention-to-treat basis. This trial is registered with ISRCTN76912190 (Dec 8, 2008); ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00872469; and PACTR201007000192283. Findings Between March, 2010, and April, 2016, 20 060 women were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive tranexamic acid (n=10 051) or placebo (n=10 009), of whom 10 036 and 9985, respectively, were included in the analysis. Death due to bleeding was significantly reduced in women given tranexamic acid (155 [1·5%] of 10 036 patients vs 191 [1·9%] of 9985 in the placebo group, risk ratio [RR] 0·81, 95% CI 0·65–1·00; p=0·045), especially in women given treatment within 3 h of giving birth (89 [1·2%] in the tranexamic acid group vs 127 [1·7%] in the placebo group, RR 0·69, 95% CI 0·52–0·91; p=0·008). All other causes of death did not differ significantly by group. Hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (358 [3·6%] patients in the tranexamic acid group vs 351 [3·5%] in the placebo group, RR 1·02, 95% CI 0·88–1·07; p=0·84). The composite primary endpoint of death from all causes or hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (534 [5·3%] deaths or hysterectomies in the tranexamic acid group vs 546 [5·5%] in the placebo group, RR 0·97, 95% CI 0·87-1·09; p=0·65). Adverse events (including thromboembolic events) did not differ significantly in the tranexamic acid versus placebo group. Interpretation Tranexamic acid reduces death due to bleeding in women with post-partum haemorrhage with no adverse effects. When used as a treatment for postpartum haemorrhage, tranexamic acid should be given as soon as possible after bleeding onset.
