Satellite on-board processing for earth resources data
Results of a survey of earth resources user applications and their data requirements, earth resources multispectral scanner sensor technology, and preprocessing algorithms for correcting the sensor outputs and for data bulk reduction are presented along with a candidate data format. Computational requirements required to implement the data analysis algorithms are included along with a review of computer architectures and organizations. Computer architectures capable of handling the algorithm computational requirements are suggested and the environmental effects of an on-board processor discussed. By relating performance parameters to the system requirements of each of the user requirements the feasibility of on-board processing is determined for each user. A tradeoff analysis is performed to determine the sensitivity of results to each of the system parameters. Significant results and conclusions are discussed, and recommendations are presented
Extracting the depolarization coefficient D_NN from data measured with a full acceptance detector
The spin transfer from vertically polarized beam protons to Lambda or Sigma
hyperons of the associated strangeness production pp -> pK Lambda (Sigma) is
described with the depolarization coefficient D_NN. As the polarization of the
hyperons is determined by their weak decays, detectors, which have a large
acceptance for the decay particles, are needed. In this paper a formula is
derived, which describes the depolarization coefficient D_NN by count rates of
a 4 pi detector. It is shown, that formulas, which are given in publications
for detectors with restricted acceptance, are specific cases of this formula

Area-Constrained Planar Elastica
We determine the equilibria of a rigid loop in the plane, subject to the
constraints of fixed length and fixed enclosed area. Rigidity is characterized
by an energy functional quadratic in the curvature of the loop. We find that
the area constraint gives rise to equilibria with remarkable geometrical
properties: not only can the Euler-Lagrange equation be integrated to provide a
quadrature for the curvature but, in addition, the embedding itself can be
expressed as a local function of the curvature. The configuration space is
shown to be essentially one-dimensional, with surprisingly rich structure.
Distinct branches of integer-indexed equilibria exhibit self-intersections and
bifurcations -- a gallery of plots is provided to highlight these findings.
Perturbations connecting equilibria are shown to satisfy a first order ODE
which is readily solved. We also obtain analytical expressions for the energy

Straightening of Thermal Fluctuations in Semi-Flexible Polymers by Applied Tension
We investigate the propagation of a suddenly applied tension along a
thermally excited semi-flexible polymer using analytical approximations,
scaling arguments and numerical simulation. This problem is inherently
non-linear. We find sub-diffusive propagation with a dynamical exponent of 1/4.
By generalizing the internal elasticity, we show that tense strings exhibit
qualitatively different tension profiles and propagation with an exponent of

High precision measurement of the associated strangeness production in proton proton interactions
A new high precision measurement of the reaction pp -> pK+Lambda at a beam
momentum of 2.95 GeV/c with more than 200,000 analyzed events allows a detailed
analysis of differential observables and their inter-dependencies. Correlations
of the angular distributions with momenta are examined. The invariant mass
distributions are compared for different regions in the Dalitz plots. The cusp
structure at the N Sigma threshold is described with the Flatt\'e formalism and
its variation in the Dalitz plot is analyzed.Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
Flavour physics from an approximate U(2)^3 symmetry
The quark sector of the Standard Model exhibits an approximate U(2)^3 flavour
symmetry. This symmetry, broken in specific directions dictated by minimality,
can explain the success of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa picture of flavour
mixing and CP violation, confirmed by the data so far, while allowing for
observable deviations from it, as expected in most models of ElectroWeak
Symmetry Breaking. Building on previous work in the specific context of
supersymmetry, we analyze the expected effects and we quantify the current
bounds in a general Effective Field Theory framework. As a further relevant
example we then show how the U(2)^3 symmetry and its breaking can be
implemented in a generic composite Higgs model and we make a first analysis of
its peculiar consequences. We also discuss how some partial extension of U(2)^3
to the lepton sector can arise, both in general and in composite Higgs models.
An optimistic though conceivable interpretation of the considerations developed
in this paper gives reasons to think that new physics searches in the flavour
sector may be about to explore an interesting realm of phenomena.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figure
On the SigmaN cusp in the pp -> pK+Lambda reaction
Measurements of the reaction at = 2.28 GeV have
been carried out at COSY-TOF. In addition to the FSI and
resonance excitation effects a pronounced narrow structure is observed in the
Dalitz plot and in its projection on the -invariant mass. The
structure appears at the N threshold and is interpreted as
N cusp effect. The observed width of 20 MeV/ is substantially
broader than anticipated from previous inclusive measurements. Angular
distributions of this cusp structure are shown to be dissimilar to those in the
residual channel, but similar to those observed in the
channel
Improved study of a possible Theta+ production in the pp -> p K0 sigma+ reaction with the COSY-TOF spectrometer
The pp -> p K0 Sigma+ reaction was investigated with the TOF spectrometer at
COSY at 3.059 GeV/c incident beam momentum. The main objective was to clarify
whether or not a narrow exotic S = +1 resnance, the Theta+ pentaquark, is
populated at 1.53 GeV/c2 in the K0 p subsystem with a data sample of much
higher statistical significance compared to the previously reported data in
this channel. An analysis of these data does not confirm the existence of the
Theta+ pentaquark. This is expressed as an upper limit for the cross section
sigma (pp -> p K0 Sigma+) < 0.15 microbarn at the 95 percent confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
