Bioluminescent signals spatially amplified by wavelength-specific diffusion through the shell of a marine snail
Some living organisms produce visible light (bioluminescence) for intra- or interspecific visual communication. Here, we describe a remarkable bioluminescent adaptation in the marine snail Hinea brasiliana. This species produces a luminous display in response to mechanical stimulation caused by encounters with other motile organisms. The light is produced from discrete areas on the snail's body beneath the snail's shell, and must thus overcome this structural barrier to be viewed by an external receiver. The diffusion and transmission efficiency of the shell is greater than a commercial diffuser reference material. Most strikingly, the shell, although opaque and pigmented, selectively diffuses the blue-green wavelength of the species bioluminescence. This diffusion generates a luminous display that is enlarged relative to the original light source. This unusual shell thus allows spatially amplified outward transmission of light communication signals from the snail, while allowing the animal to remain safely inside its hard protective shell

Magnetic permeability of stainless steel for use in accelerator beam transport systems
High-vacuum beam transport tubes are being designed for use in an accelerator under development at Los Alamos. In areas such as weld-heat-affected zones, the tubes will require localized magnetic permeability of less than 1.02. Seven austenitic stainless steel candidates, 304L, 310, 316L, 317LN, 20Cb-3, Nitronic 33, and Nitronic 40, have been evaluated to determine their permeability in cold-worked, annealed, and weld-affected zones. 310 and 20Cb-3 showed permeability after welding of less than 1.01. 1 ref., 1 fig., 1 tab
Critical exponents in zero dimensions
In the vicinity of the onset of an instability, we investigate the effect of
colored multiplicative noise on the scaling of the moments of the unstable mode
amplitude. We introduce a family of zero dimensional models for which we can
calculate the exact value of the critical exponents for all the
moments. The results are obtained through asymptotic expansions that use the
distance to onset as a small parameter. The examined family displays a variety
of behaviors of the critical exponents that includes anomalous exponents:
exponents that differ from the deterministic (mean-field) prediction, and
multiscaling: non-linear dependence of the exponents on the order of the
moment
Kafirin structure and functionality
The structural and functional properties of kafirins are reviewed. Three classes of kafirin: the a, Ă and ? forms have been identified at the protein level and one, the d, has been identified only at the gene and transcript levels. All forms show high homology with the equivalent zein proteins. By analogy with the zeins it is believed that the a-kafirins probably have an extended hairpin structure in solution, comprising elements of a-helix, Ă-sheet and turns folded back on itself. Kafirins are the most hydrophobic of the prolamins as shown by their solubility, and calculated hydration free energies. The proteins exhibit extensive cross-linking by disulphide bonds and on cooking form indigestible aggregates which are not solubilised by reduction of disulphide bonds. In spite of continuing studies, the reasons for the low digestibility of the protein remain uncertain and there may be several factors involved. Testing of vacuum pumps for the Accelerator Production of Tritium/Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator radio frequency quadrupole
Two vacuum systems were designed and built for the RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) cavity in the APT/LEDA (Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator) linac. The gas load from the proton beam required very high hydrogen pump speed and capacity. The gas load from the high power RF windows also required very high hydrogen pump speed for the RF window vacuum system. Cryopumps were chosen for the RFQ vacuum system and ST185 sintered non-evaporable getter (NEG) cartridges were chosen for the RF window vacuum system. Hydrogen pump speed and capacity measurements were carried out for a commercial cryopump and a NEG pump. This paper will discuss the test procedures and the results of the measurements
Reanalysis of two eclipsing binaries: EE Aqr and Z Vul
We study the radial-velocity and light curves of the two eclipsing binaries
EE Aqr and Z Vul. Using the latest version of the Wilson & Van Hamme (2003)
model, absolute parameters for the systems are determined. We find that EE Aqr
and Z Vul are near-contact and semi-detached systems, respectively. The primary
component of EE Aqr fills about 96% of its 'Roche lobe', while its secondary
one appears close to completely filling this limiting volume. In a similar way,
we find fill-out proportions of about 72 and 100% of these volumes for the
primary and secondary components of Z Vul respectively. We compare our results

Some Applications of the Extended Bendixson-Dulac Theorem
During the last years the authors have studied the number of limit cycles of
several families of planar vector fields. The common tool has been the use of
an extended version of the celebrated Bendixson-Dulac Theorem. The aim of this
work is to present an unified approach of some of these results, together with

Nonperturbative QCD Vacuum Effects in Nonlocal Quark Dynamics
A straightforward calculation reveals the essentially nonlocal character of
the leading heavy interaction arising from nonperturbative gluon
field correlations in the model of a fluctuating QCD vacuum. In light of this
quarkonium spin splitting ratio predictions which have supported the scalar
confinement ansatz are reconsidered as a specific example of possible

Factors Affecting European FarmersâParticipation in Biodiversity Policies
This article reports the major findings from an interdisciplinary research project that synthesises key insights into farmersâ willingness and ability to co-operate with biodiversity policies. The results of the study are based on an assessment of about 160
publications and research reports from six EU member states and from international comparative research.We developed a conceptual framework to systematically review the
existent literature relevant for our purposes. This framework provides a common structure for analysing farmersâ perspectives regarding the introduction into farming practices of measures relevant to biodiversity. The analysis is coupled and contrasted with a survey of experts. The results presented above suggest that it is important to view support for practices oriented towards biodiversity protection not in a static sense â as a situation determined by one or several influencing factors â but rather as a process marked by interaction. Financial compensation and incentives function as a necessary, though
clearly not sufficient condition in this process
