Pride and Prejudice: Same-Sex Marriage Legalization Announcements and Hate Crimes
In this paper, we examine whether same-sex marriage legalization announcements impact the occurrence of hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Using a difference-in-differences design, we exploit the variation in the timing of same-sex marriage legalization announcements across states. On average, a same-sex marriage legalization announcement reduces the anti-LGBT hate crime rate by .112 per 100,000 people, although some additional analyses have weaker results. Decreases are mostly driven by reductions in violent crimes. Event-study estimates show that results fade after 1 year and provide evidence that reductions are not due to changes in social trends before an announcement. Our results demonstrate that salient, progressive LGBT policy announcements may, by themselves, effectively reduce anti-LGBT hate crimes
Racing Towards Reinforcement Learning based control of an Autonomous Formula SAE Car
With the rising popularity of autonomous navigation research, Formula Student
(FS) events are introducing a Driverless Vehicle (DV) category to their event
list. This paper presents the initial investigation into utilising Deep
Reinforcement Learning (RL) for end-to-end control of an autonomous FS race car
for these competitions. We train two state-of-the-art RL algorithms in
simulation on tracks analogous to the full-scale design on a Turtlebot2
platform. The results demonstrate that our approach can successfully learn to
race in simulation and then transfer to a real-world racetrack on the physical
platform. Finally, we provide insights into the limitations of the presented
approach and guidance into the future directions for applying RL toward
full-scale autonomous FS racing.Comment: Accepted at the Australasian Conference on Robotics and Automation

The habitability of super-Earths in Gliese 581
Aims: The planetary system around the M star Gliese 581 consists of a hot
Neptune (Gl 581b) and two super-Earths (Gl 581c and Gl 581d). The habitability
of this system with respect to the super-Earths is investigated following a
concept that studies the long-term possibility of photosynthetic biomass
production on a dynamically active planet. Methods: A thermal evolution model
for a super-Earth is used to calculate the sources and sinks of atmospheric
carbon dioxide. The habitable zone is determined by the limits of biological
productivity on the planetary surface. Models with different ratios of land /
ocean coverage are investigated. Results: The super-Earth Gl 581c is clearly
outside the habitable zone, since it is too close to the star. In contrast, Gl
581d is a tidally locked habitable super-Earth near the outer edge of the
habitable zone. Despite the adverse conditions on this planet, at least some
primitive forms of life may be able to exist on its surface. Therefore, Gl 581d
is an interesting target for the planned TPF/Darwin missions to search for
biomarkers in planetary atmospheres.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
How to Weigh a Star Using a Moon
We show that for a transiting exoplanet accompanied by a moon which also
transits, the absolute masses and radii of the star, planet and moon are
determinable. For a planet-star system, it is well known that the density of
the star is calculable from the lightcurve by manipulation of Kepler's Third
Law. In an analogous way, the planetary density is calculable for a planet-moon
system which transits a star, and thus the ratio-of-densities is known. By
combining this ratio with the observed ratio-of-radii and the radial velocity
measurements of the system, we show that the absolute dimensions of the star
and planet are determinable. This means such systems could be used as
calibrators of stellar evolution. The detection of dynamical effects, such as
transit timing variations, allows the absolute mass of the moon to be
determined as well, which may be combined with the radius to infer the
satellite's composition.Comment: 5 pages; Accepted in MNRA
Experiences of registered nurses with regard to accessing health information at the point-of-care via mobile computing devices
Background: The volume of health information necessary to provide competent health care today has become overwhelming. Mobile computing devices are fast becoming an essential clinical tool for accessing health information at the point-of-care of patients.
Objectives: This study explored and described how registered nurses experienced accessing information at the point-of-care via mobile computing devices (MCDs).
Method: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was used. Ten in–depth interviews were conducted with purposively sampled registered nurses employed by a state hospital in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM). Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Tesch’s data analysis technique. Ethical principles were adhered to throughout the study. Guba’s model of trustworthiness was used to confirm integrity of the study.
Results: Four themes emerged which revealed that the registered nurses benefited from the training they received by enabling them to develop, and improve, their computer literacy levels. Emphasis was placed on the benefits that the accessed information had for educational purposes for patients and the public, for colleagues and students. Furthermore the ability to access information at the point-of-care was considered by registered nurses as valuable to improve patient care because of the wide range of accurate and readily accessible information available via the mobile computing device.
Conclusion: The registered nurses in this study felt that being able to access information at the point-of-care increased their confidence and facilitated the provision of quality care because it assisted them in being accurate and sure of what they were doing
