Quasicontinuum -decay of Zr: benchmarking indirect () cross section measurements for the -process
Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and -ray strength functions
(SFs) have been extracted from particle- coincidences of the
Zr()Zr and Zr()Zr
reactions using the Oslo method. The new Zr SF data, combined
with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from ~MeV up to the giant dipole resonance at ~MeV. The wide-range SF data display structures at ~MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip
resonance and a pygmy resonance. Furthermore, the SF shows a
minimum at ~MeV and an increase at lower -ray
energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and SFs are shown to
reproduce known () and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for
Zr using the {\sf TALYS} reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark
for this indirect method of estimating () cross sections for Zr
isotopes.Comment: 10 pages and 9 figure

Small States in the Rearview Mirror: Legitimacy in the Management of Economy and Society
Small States in World Markets is about political efficacy and legitimation rather than scoring who is ahead in the economic sweepstakes. Its case for democratic corporatism rests on norms, particularly stability, rather than on narrow measures of economic efficiency. But stability and the efficacious management of the economy and social problems requires a degree of technocracy that undermines the legitimacy of the management process itself by helping to produce populist revolts
Murder in Jerba : honour, shame and hospitality among Maltese in Ottoman Tunisia
Little is known about the sizeable Maltese communities developing along the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean in the mid-nineteenth century and the extent to which the migrants reproduced Maltese cultural traditions and practices overseas. This article considers this question through a microhistorical analysis of events culminating in the murder of a Maltese woman in the Ottoman Regency of Tunis in 1866. A close reading of transcripts from the interrogation of witnesses and the accused, all members of a Maltese community in Jerba reveals their shared cultural practices and beliefs surrounding the provision of hospitality, honour and shame. Viewed from this perspective, the curious responses of the witnesses to the murder of their compatriot become meaningful, and the crime is reframed as an honour killing.peer-reviewe
Infectious causes of microcephaly: epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.
Microcephaly is an important sign of neurological malformation and a predictor of future disability. The 2015-16 outbreak of Zika virus and congenital Zika infection brought the world's attention to links between Zika infection and microcephaly. However, Zika virus is only one of the infectious causes of microcephaly and, although the contexts in which they occur vary greatly, all are of concern. In this Review, we summarise important aspects of major congenital infections that can cause microcephaly, and describe the epidemiology, transmission, clinical features, pathogenesis, management, and long-term consequences of these infections. We include infections that cause substantial impairment: cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, rubella virus, Toxoplasma gondii, and Zika virus. We highlight potential issues with classification of microcephaly and show how some infants affected by congenital infection might be missed or incorrectly diagnosed. Although Zika virus has brought the attention of the world to the problem of microcephaly, prevention of all infectious causes of microcephaly and appropriately managing its consequences remain important global public health priorities
