    Przeprowadzka Instytutu Fizyki UJ ze starego budynku przy ulicy Reymonta 4 do nowych pomieszczeń na III Kampusie UJ dała możliwość stworzenia nowoczesnej, funkcjonalnej, spełniającej standardy europejskie biblioteki naukowej. Biblioteka w nowej, zmienionej formie, będącej wynikiem współpracy bibliotekarzy i architektów oferuje czytelnikom wolny dostęp do książek, stanowiska komputerowe, wygodne czytelnie, aneks wystawowy. Wprowadzony nowoczesny system technologii radiowej RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) połączony z komputerowym systemem bibliotecznym, identyfikuje czytelnika i książki. Nowoczesne urządzenia biblioteczne umożliwiają samodzielne wypożyczanie i zwrot książek. Biblioteka prowadzi działalność naukowo-bibliograficzną, edukacyjną, organizowane są wystawy. Rozpoczęto digitalizacjęThe big move of the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Physics from the old building at 4 Reymonta Street to the new premises of the 3rd Jagiellonian University Campus at 11 Prof. Stanisław Łojasiewicz Street provided a perfect opportunity for creating a practical, modern and up-to-all-European-standards academic library. Being the result of a close cooperation between the architects and the librarians, the Library in this new form offers a free access to books, computer consoles, comfortable reading rooms and an exhibition hall. Having been linked with a library computer system, a new radio-technology-based system called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) enables the identification of both library users and books. Modern technology based library devices allow the borrow – return procedures to be carried out by library users themselves. The Library runs a variety of activities including compiling reference materials, organising educational meetings and exhibitions. The digitalisation of selected 19th century works has just started, merging them with the contents of the Digital Jagiellonian Library.Переїзд Інституту фізики Ягеллонського університету зі старого будинку на вул. Реймонта до нових приміщень третього кампусу сприяв створенню сучасної багатофункціональної наукової бібліотеки згідно європейських стандартів. Нова модернізована бібліотека, що постала у результаті тісної співпраці бібліотекарів і архітекторів пропонує читачам вільний доступ до книжок, користувачам автоматизовані робочі місця, комфортні читальні зали, виставкові площі. Впровадження технології RFID в інтеграції з автоматизованою бібліотечною системою дає змогу ідентифікувати читачів і книжки. Сучасні автоматизовані бібліотечні пристрої уможливлюють самостійно здійснювати запис і реєстрацію документів на абонемент і повернення літератури.     Procedures for real time evaluation of the inflight health and performance of gas turbine engines and related systems were developed to enhance flight test safety and productivity. These techniques include the monitoring of the engine, the engine control system, thrust vectoring control system health, and the detection of engine stalls. Real time performance techniques were developed for the determination and display of inflight thrust and for aeroperformance drag polars. These new methods were successfully shown on various research aircraft at NASA-Dryden. The capability of NASA's Western Aeronautical Test Range and the advanced data acquisition systems were key factors for implementation and real time display of these methods

    Bicycle Infrastructure and Traffic Congestion: Evidence from DC\u27s Capital Bikeshare

    This study explores the impact of bicycle-sharing infrastructure on urban transportation. We estimate a causal effect of the Capital Bikeshare on traffic congestion in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. We exploit a unique traffic dataset that is finely defined on a spatial and temporal scale. Our approach examines within-city commuting decisions as opposed to traffic patterns on major thruways. Empirical results suggest that the availability of a bikeshare reduces traffic congestion upwards of 4% within a neighborhood. In addition, we estimate heterogeneous treatment effects using panel quantile regression. Results indicate that the congestion-reducing impact of bikeshares is concentrated in highly congested areas

    Environmental complexity: A buffer against stress in the domestic chick

    Birds kept in commercial production systems can be exposed to multiple stressors from early life and this alters the development of different morphological, immunological and behavioural indicators. We explore the hypothesis that provision of a complex environment during early life, better prepares birds to cope with stressful events as well as buffers them against future unpredictable stressful episodes. In this study, 96 one day old pullets were randomly distributed in eight pens (12 birds/pen). Half of the chicks (N = 48) were assigned to a Complex Environment (CENV: with perches, a dark brooder etc.) the others to a Simple Environment (SENV: without enrichment features). Half of the birds from each of these treatments were assigned to a No Stress (NSTR, 33C) or to an acute Cold Stress (CSTR, 18–20C) treatment during six hours on their second day of life. At four weeks of age, chicks with these four different backgrounds were exposed to an Intermittent Stressful Challenges Protocol (ISCP). In an immunological test indicative of pro-inflammatory status Phytohe-magglutinin-P (PHA-P), the response of CSTR birds was ameliorated by rearing chicks in a CENV as they had a similar response to NSTR chicks and a significantly better pro-inflammatory response than those CSTR birds reared in a SENV (five days after the CSTR treatment was applied). A similar better response when coping with new challenges (the ISCP) was observed in birds reared in a CENV compared to those from a SENV. Birds reared in the CENV had a lower heterophil/lymphocyte ratio after the ISCP than birds reared in SENV, independently of whether or not they had been exposed to CSTR early in life. No effects of stress on general behaviour were detected, however, the provision of a CENV increased resting behaviour, which may have favoured stress recover. Additionally, we found that exposure to cold stress at an early age might have rendered birds more vulnerable to future stressful events. CSTR birds had lower humoral immune responses (sheep red blood cells induced antibodies) after the ISCP and started using elevated structures in the CENV later compared to their NSTR conspecifics. Our study reflects the importance of the early provision of a CENV in commercial conditions to reduce negative stress-related effects. Within the context of the theory of adaptive plasticity, our results suggest that the early experience of the birds had long lasting effects on the modulation of their phenotypes.Fil: Campderrich, Irene.     Cracking during flame spread over pyrolyzing solids

    A theoretical and numerical model for the degradation of solid materials in combustion is developed. As solid materials are heated by the flame, they undergo an internal thermo- chemical breakdown process known as pyrolysis. As the pyrolysis front propagates into the sample, a charring layer is left behind which contains voids, fractures and defects. Cracks propagate to release tensile stresses accumulated when the sample is losing mass. The crack front may precede the pyrolysis front into the sample. Crack patterns and fracture behaviors vary depending on material properties and heating level and distribution. Cracks cause loss of material integrity by forming isolated loops or fragments. Cracks concentrate the stresses and reduce material ability to withstand external loads. Cracks expose uncharred materials to flame, accelerating combustion. The process is highly nonlinear: crack patterns display fractal behavior. Dimensionless groups that define the model are examined: each yields different crack patterns

    Relationships of Serum CC16 Levels with Smoking Status and Lung Function in COPD

    Background: The club cell secretory protein (CC16) has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and low CC16 serum levels have been associated with both risk and progression of COPD, yet the interaction between smoking and CC16 on lung function outcomes remains unknown. Methods: Utilizing cross-sectional data on United States veterans, CC16 serum concentrations were measured by ELISA and log transformed for analyses. Spirometry was conducted and COPD status was defined by post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio \u3c 0.7. Smoking measures were self-reported on questionnaire. Multivariable logistic and linear regression were employed to examine associations between CC16 levels and COPD, and lung function with adjustment for covariates. Unadjusted Pearson correlations described relationships between CC16 level and lung function measures, pack-years smoked, and years since smoking cessation. Results: The study population (N = 351) was mostly male, white, with an average age over 60 years. An interaction between CC16 and smoking status on FEV1/FVC ratio was demonstrated among subjects with COPD (N = 245, p = 0.01). There was a positive correlation among former smokers and negative correlation among current or never smokers with COPD. Among former smokers with COPD, CC16 levels were also positively correlated with years since smoking cessation, and inversely related with pack-years smoked. Increasing CC16 levels were associated with lower odds of COPD (ORadj = 0.36, 95% CI 0.22-0.57, Padj \u3c 0.0001). Conclusions: Smoking status is an important effect modifier of CC16 relationships with lung function. Increasing serum CC16 corresponded to increases in FEV1/FVC ratio in former smokers with COPD versus opposite relationships in current or never smokers. Additional longitudinal studies may be warranted to assess relationship of CC16 with smoking cessation on lung function among subjects with COPD

    Comparing Electronic Monitoring and human observer collected fishery data in the tropical purse seine operating in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean

    Electronic Monitory (EM) systems have been proven a valid tool for collecting fishery dependent data. They are being widely used in many fisheries as a complement or alternative to human observers to increase the monitoring coverage of fisheries. However, considering its wide application, following agreed minimum standard, it is important to compare the congruence between the information collected by EM and observers. We compared EM and two sets of different observer data collected on 6 trips of tuna purse seiners in the Eastern and Western and Central Pacific Ocean to analyze the similarity of fishing set type identification, estimation of tuna and bycatch catches between both monitoring systems. Overall EM was a valid tool to estimate the type of fishing set. Retained total catch of tunas by set was estimated by EM as reliable as that by both observer programs and logbook. When comparing the information by set, EM estimation of the main species, such as skipjack and bigeye and the combination of bigeye/yellowfin, was proven to be less accurate but statistically similar to the estimates made by both observers’ programs. EM tended to underestimate the retained catch of skipjack in comparison to both observers estimates and slightly overestimate bigeye and yellowfin, the overestimation being less pronounced for bigeye than for yellowfin. For bycatch species, EM is able to identify main bycatch species as observers do. However, the capability of EM to estimate the same number of bycatch items in comparison to IATTC and WCPFC observers varies greatly by species group. For sharks, which are the main bycatch issue in the FAD purse seine fishery, the overall congruence between EM and observers was high. EM and IATTC observer identified a similar overall number of individual sharks, however, WCPFC observers estimated lower number of shark individuals than the other two monitoring systems when considering all trips together.Versión del edito
