    TESS Duotransit Candidates from the Southern Ecliptic Hemisphere

    Discovering transiting exoplanets with long orbital periods allows us to study warm and cool planetary systems with temperatures similar to the planets in our own Solar system. The TESS mission has photometrically surveyed the entire Southern Ecliptic Hemisphere in Cycle 1 (August 2018 - July 2019), Cycle 3 (July 2020 - June 2021) and Cycle 5 (September 2022 - September 2023). We use the observations from Cycle 1 and Cycle 3 to search for exoplanet systems that show a single transit event in each year - which we call duotransits. The periods of these planet candidates are typically in excess of 20 days, with the lower limit determined by the duration of individual TESS observations. We find 85 duotransit candidates, which span a range of host star brightnesses between 8 < TmagT_{mag} < 14, transit depths between 0.1 per cent and 1.8 per cent, and transit durations between 2 and 10 hours with the upper limit determined by our normalisation function. Of these candidates, 25 are already known, and 60 are new.     NGTS clusters survey -- II. White-light flares from the youngest stars in Orion

    We present the detection of high energy white-light flares from pre-main sequence stars associated with the Orion complex, observed as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). With energies up to 5.2×10355.2\times10^{35} erg these flares are some of the most energetic white-light flare events seen to date. We have used the NGTS observations of flaring and non-flaring stars to measure the average flare occurrence rate for 4 Myr M0-M3 stars. We have also combined our results with those from previous studies to predict average rates for flares above 1×10351\times10^{35} ergs for early M stars in nearby young associations.STFC ST/M001962/1; ST/P000495/

    A multinuclear NMR study of six forms of AlPO-34:structure and motional broadening

    We report a study of the CHA-type aluminophosphate AlPO-34, prepared with six different structure-directing agents (SDAs): piperidine (pip), morpholine (mor), pyridine (pyr), 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam), 1,3 dimethylimidazolium (dmim) chloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (emim) bromide. Using a combination of solid-state NMR spectroscopy, periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we show that, even in crystallographically well-ordered materials such as AlPO-34 with dmim as the SDA, local disorder may be present. For such disordered structures, where it is challenging to use DFT to assign NMR spectra, we show that the 31P isotropic chemical shift can be predicted accurately using the mean P-O bond length and P-O-Al bond angle, in an extension of previous work. Variable-temperature 27Al NMR reveals the presence of microsecond-timescale dynamics in all forms of AlPO- 34, with two different motional regimes observed, depending on whether structural H2O is also present. H2O is detected in AlPO-34 prepared with mor as the SDA, although this material was previously reported as anhydrous, suggesting that this form of AlPO-34 may be hygroscopic despite the presence of the SDAs within the pores

    Scintillation-limited photometry with the 20-cm NGTS telescopes at Paranal Observatory

    Ground-based photometry of bright stars is expected to be limited by atmospheric scintillation, although in practice observations are often limited by other sources of systematic noise. We analyse 122 nights of bright star (Gmag ≲ 11.5) photometry using the 20-cm telescopes of the Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. We compare the noise properties to theoretical noise models and we demonstrate that NGTS photometry of bright stars is indeed limited by atmospheric scintillation. We determine a median scintillation coefficient at the Paranal Observatory of CY=1.54⁠, which is in good agreement with previous results derived from turbulence profiling measurements at the observatory. We find that separate NGTS telescopes make consistent measurements of scintillation when simultaneously monitoring the same field. Using contemporaneous meteorological data, we find that higher wind speeds at the tropopause correlate with a decrease in long-exposure (t = 10 s) scintillation. Hence, the winter months between June and August provide the best conditions for high-precision photometry of bright stars at the Paranal Observatory. This work demonstrates that NGTS photometric data, collected for searching for exoplanets, contains within it a record of the scintillation conditions at Paranal

    Automatic vetting of planet candidates from ground based surveys : machine learning with NGTS

    State of the art exoplanet transit surveys are producing ever increasing quantities of data. To make the best use of this resource, in detecting interesting planetary systems or in determining accurate planetary population statistics, requires new automated methods. Here we describe a machine learning algorithm that forms an integral part of the pipeline for the NGTS transit survey, demonstrating the efficacy of machine learning in selecting planetary candidates from multi-night ground based survey data. Our method uses a combination of random forests and self-organising-maps to rank planetary candidates, achieving an AUC score of 97.6% in ranking 12368 injected planets against 27496 false positives in the NGTS data. We build on past examples by using injected transit signals to form a training set, a necessary development for applying similar methods to upcoming surveys. We also make the autovet code used to implement the algorithm publicly accessible. autovet is designed to perform machine learned vetting of planetary candidates, and can utilise a variety of methods. The apparent robustness of machine learning techniques, whether on space-based or the qualitatively different ground-based data, highlights their importance to future surveys such as TESS and PLATO and the need to better understand their advantages and pitfalls in an exoplanetary context

    NGTS-21b: An Inflated Super-Jupiter Orbiting a Metal-poor K dwarf

    We report the discovery of NGTS-21b, a massive hot Jupiter orbiting a low-mass star as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The planet has a mass and radius of 2.36±0.212.36 \pm 0.21 MJ_{\rm J}, and 1.33±0.031.33 \pm 0.03 RJ_{\rm J}, and an orbital period of 1.543 days. The host is a K3V (Teff=4660±41T_{\rm eff}=4660 \pm 41, K) metal-poor ([Fe/H]=0.26±0.07{\rm [Fe/H]}=-0.26 \pm 0.07, dex) dwarf star with a mass and radius of 0.72±0.040.72 \pm 0.04, M_{\odot},and 0.86±0.040.86 \pm 0.04, R_{\odot}. Its age and rotation period of 10.027.30+3.2910.02^{+3.29}_{-7.30}, Gyr and 17.88±0.0817.88 \pm 0.08, d respectively, are in accordance with the observed moderately low stellar activity level. When comparing NGTS-21b with currently known transiting hot Jupiters with similar equilibrium temperatures, it is found to have one of the largest measured radii despite its large mass. Inflation-free planetary structure models suggest the planet's atmosphere is inflated by 21%\sim21\%, while inflationary models predict a radius consistent with observations, thus pointing to stellar irradiation as the probable origin of NGTS-21b's radius inflation. Additionally, NGTS-21b's bulk density (1.25±0.151.25 \pm 0.15, g/cm3^3) is also amongst the largest within the population of metal-poor giant hosts ([Fe/H] < 0.0), helping to reveal a falling upper boundary in metallicity-planet density parameter space that is in concordance with core accretion formation models. The discovery of rare planetary systems such as NGTS-21 greatly contributes towards better constraints being placed on the formation and evolution mechanisms of massive planets orbiting low-mass stars.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Heterogeneity of magnitude, allergen immunodominance, and cytokine polarization of cockroach allergen-specific T cell responses in allergic sensitized children.

    Background: Characterization of allergic responses to cockroach (CR), a common aeroallergen associated with asthma, has focused mainly on IgE reactivity, but little is known about T cell responses, particularly in children. We conducted a functional evaluation of CR allergen-specific T cell reactivity in a cohort of CR allergic children with asthma. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from 71 children, with mild-to-moderate asthma who were enrolled in a CR immunotherapy (IT) clinical trial, prior to treatment initiation. PBMC were stimulated with peptide pools derived from 11 CR allergens, and CD4+ T cell responses assessed by intracellular cytokine staining. Results: Highly heterogeneous responses in T cell reactivity were observed among participants, both in terms of the magnitude of cytokine response and allergen immunodominance. Reactivity against Bla g 9 and Bla g 5 was most frequent. The phenotype of the T cell response was dominated by IL-4 production and a Th2 polarized profile in 54.9% of participants, but IFNγ production and Th1 polarization was observed in 25.3% of the participants. The numbers of regulatory CD4+ T cells were also highly variable and the magnitude of effector responses and Th2 polarization were positively correlated with serum IgE levels specific to a clinical CR extract. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that in children with mild-to-moderate asthma, CR-specific T cell responses display a wide range of magnitude, allergen dominance, and polarization. These results will enable examination of whether any of the variables measured are affected by IT and/or are predictive of clinical outcomes

    NGTS-28Ab: A short period transiting brown dwarf

    We report the discovery of a brown dwarf orbiting a M1 host star. We first identified the brown dwarf within the Next Generation Transit Survey data, with supporting observations found in TESS sectors 11 and 38. We confirmed the discovery with follow-up photometry from the South African Astronomical Observatory, SPECULOOS-S, and TRAPPIST-S, and radial velocity measurements from HARPS, which allowed us to characterise the system. We find an orbital period of ~1.25 d, a mass of 69.0+5.3-4.8 MJ, close to the Hydrogen burning limit, and a radius of 0.95 +- 0.05 RJ. We determine the age to be >0.5 Gyr, using model isochrones, which is found to be in agreement with SED fitting within errors. NGTS-28Ab is one of the shortest period systems found within the brown dwarf desert, as well as one of the highest mass brown dwarfs that transits an M dwarf. This makes NGTS-28Ab another important discovery within this scarcely populated region.Comment: 20 pages (inc. appendices), 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    When it comes to work, tourism is very difficult and complex activity. In comparison to other sectors, tourism work is characterized by relatively low wages, the unfavourable working time that impoverishes family and social lives of employees, distinct subordination in labour relations, limited opportunities for advancement and due to all that high rates of turnover. Education of employees in tourism certainly mitigates these harsh conditions, and what is very important, education means a change in the values associated with the work. Transferring work values occurs intergenerational; it is the result of intergenerational communication. This research has thus focused on the extent to which the work values of the students studying in the field of tourism are similar to, or different from the values of the students from other academic areas. The results have shown that the current generations of students who are studying to work in the field of tourism activities are not any different from previous generations concerning those values that allow personal growth and development. However, a major difference has occurred in the area of utilitarian values. Modern generations have valued utilitarian values much higher than those generations 30 years ago, when the research which served as the basis for the study presented here was carried out.Turizam je, kada se govori o radu, vrlo teška i kompleksna djelatnost. Rad u turizmu karakteriziran je relativno niskim plaćama u usporedbi s drugim sektorima, nepovoljnim radnim vremenom koje osiromašuje obiteljski i društveni život zaposlenih, izrazitom podređenošću u radnim odnosima, malim mogućnostima napredovanja i zbog svega toga visokim stopama turnover. Obrazovanje radne snage svakako ublažava ove teške uvjete rada. Obrazovanje znači i promjenu u vrijednostima povezanim s radom. Prijenos radnih vrijednosti događa se međugeneracijski; on je rezultat međugeneracijske komunikacije. Inters ovog istraživanja bio je usmjeren prema tome u kojoj su mjeri radne vrijednosti studenata koji studiraju na području turizma slične ili različite studentima drugih akademskih područja. Rezultati su pokazali da se sadašnja generacija studenata koji se obrazuju za rad u području turističke djelatnosti ne razlikuje od ranijih generacija u području onih vrijednosti koje omogućuju osobni rast i razvoj. Bitna je razlika u području utalitarnih vrijednosti. Suvremene generacije vrednuju te vrijednosti znatno više nego one prije 30 godina, kada je izvedeno istraživanje koje je poslužilo kao osnova za istraživanje koje se ovdje prikazuje
