    Tropical summer induces DNA fragmentation in boar spermatozoa: implications for evaluating seasonal infertility

    Summer infertility continues to undermine pig productivity, costing the pig industry millions in annual losses. The boar’s inefficient capacity to sweat, non-pendulous scrotum and the extensive use of European breeds in tropical conditions, can make the boar particularly vulnerable to the effects of heat stress; however, the link between summer heat stress and boar sperm DNA damage has not yet been demonstrated. Semen from five Large White boars was collected and evaluated during the early dry, late dry and peak wet seasons to determine the effect of seasonal heat stress on the quality and DNA integrity of boar spermatozoa. DNA damage in spermatozoa during the peak wet was 16-fold greater than during the early dry and nearly 9-fold greater than during the late dry season. Sperm concentration was 1.6-fold lower in the peak wet than early dry whereas no difference was found across several motility parameters as determined by computer-assisted sperm analysis. These results demonstrate that tropical summer (peak wet season) induces DNA damage and reduces concentration without depressing motility in boar spermatozoa, suggesting that traditional methods of evaluating sperm motility may not detect inherently compromised spermatozoa. Boar management strategies (such as antioxidant supplementation) need to be developed to specifically mitigate this problem

    The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope: I. Overview of the instrument and its capabilities

    We provide an overview of the design and capabilities of the near-infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope. NIRSpec is designed to be capable of carrying out low-resolution (R ⁣=30 ⁣−330R\!=30\!-330) prism spectroscopy over the wavelength range 0.6−5.3â€‰âŁÂ ÎŒ0.6-5.3\!~\mum and higher resolution (R ⁣=500 ⁣−1340R\!=500\!-1340 or R ⁣=1320 ⁣−3600R\!=1320\!-3600) grating spectroscopy over 0.7−5.2â€‰âŁÂ ÎŒ0.7-5.2\!~\mum, both in single-object mode employing any one of five fixed slits, or a 3.1×\times3.2 arcsec2^2 integral field unit, or in multiobject mode employing a novel programmable micro-shutter device covering a 3.6×\times3.4~arcmin2^2 field of view. The all-reflective optical chain of NIRSpec and the performance of its different components are described, and some of the trade-offs made in designing the instrument are touched upon. The faint-end spectrophotometric sensitivity expected of NIRSpec, as well as its dependency on the energetic particle environment that its two detector arrays are likely to be subjected to in orbit are also discussed

    THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PLASMA PROGESTERONE AND LH AND THE NUMBERS OF CORPORA LUTEA AND EMBRYOS IN PUREBRED AND CROSSBRED GILTS

    Relationships between plasma progesterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) and the numbers of corpora lutea and embryos were determined in 133 8-month-old purebred Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire gilts and two-breed crosses among the three breeds. The numbers of corpora lutea and normal embryos were determined at slaughteronday 30.8 ± .2 of pregnancy, and progesterone and LH were quantified in plasma obtained the previous day. Progesterone concentrations in plasma were influenced by sire (P\u3c.10), breed of dam (P\u3c.05) and breed of sire x breed of dam (P\u3c.05). Hampshire gilts had higher concentrations of progesterone in plasma than did Durocs (P\u3c.05) and Yorkshires (P\u3c.01). None of the effects in the model was significant for LH. Plasma progesterone and LH had heritability estimates of .48 ± .41 and .29 ± .40, respectively. Most genetic and phenotypic correlations of plasma progesterone and LH with other traits were small. These data indicate that progesterone concentrations in plasma at 30 days of pregnancy are not a satisfactory predictor of the numbers of corpora lutea and embryos. The differences in plasma progesterone between breeds illustrate the need to consider the breed of gilts when selecting animals for the study of luteal function or physiological factors that may influence progesterone concentrations in plasma
