    An introduction to regular splines and their application for initial value problems of ordinary differential equations

    This report describes an application of the general method of integrating initial value problems by means of regular splines for equations with movable singularities. By defining the families of functions that make up the regular splines such that they closely resemble the behaviour of the solutions of the differential equation, it is possible to trace the location of the singularities very precisely. To demonstrate this we treat Riccati differential equations. These are known to possess solutions with poles, usually of the first order. This type of differential equation or system arises in describing chemical or biological processes or more general control processes. To make the report self contained it starts with an introduction to regular splines and develops the algebraic tools for the manipulation of rational splines. After the description of the integration procedure, the asymptotic behaviour of the systematic error is investigated. An example exhibits the results obtained from the program given in Appendix A. Then Riccati equations are introduced and methods for the determination of the singularities are developed. These methods are tested numerically with several examples. The results are given in Appendix B

    Mindful of the power of media in the ancient and medieval past, in modernity and in current biblical scholarship, this paper attempts an overview of the history of the biblical texts from their oral and papyrological beginnings all the way to their triumphant apotheosis in print culture.     During the 1969 and 1970 growing seasons research was conducted to investigate the relationship between remote sensing imagery and soil moisture. The research was accomplished under two completely different conditions: (1) cultivated cropland in east central South Dakota, and (2) rangeland in western South Dakota. Aerial and ground truth data are being studied and correlated in order to evaluate the moisture supply and water use. Results show that remote sensing is a feasible method for monitoring soil moisture

    Few topics are as suited for a celebration of Walter Ong's intellectual accomplishment as the Logos, for the Word in its kaleidoscopic manifestations and intriguing transformations constitutes the center of his lifelong scholarly attention. A masterful practitioner of words himself, he has repatterned the entire paradigm of Logos and logoi toward a new synthesis, the relevance of which extends beyond the broad range of the humanities and social sciences to the so-called hard sciences that shape our technocratic world. The Logos of the fourth gospel has served as a forceful intellectual stimulus both in biblical studies and in philosophical, theological deliberations on language and metaphysics. We wish here to pursue the study of the Logos in these two areas of biblical exegesis and philosophical, theological reflection. Because Ong's work has awakened sensibilities that are all too often left dormant in academia, it is incumbent on us to honor him by thinking through the issue of the Logos in a novel manner

    There is a growing body of opinion that we should view autism as fractionable into different, largely independent sets of clinical features. The alternative view is that autism is a coherent syndrome in which principal features of the disorder stand in intimate developmental relationship with each other. Studies of congenitally blind children offer support for the latter position and suggest that a source of coherence in autism is restriction in certain forms of perceptually dependent social experience

Published by the Royal Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/, which permits unrestricted use, provided the original author and source are credited.Interaction Computing (IC) is inspired by the observation that cell metabolic/regulatory systems construct order dynamically, through constrained interactions between their components and based on a wide range of possible inputs and environmental conditions. The goals of this work are (1) to identify and understand mathematically the natural subsystems and hierarchical relations in natural systems enabling this, and (2) to use the resulting insights to define a new model of computation based on interactions that is useful for both biology and computation. The dynamical characteristics of the cellular pathways studied in Systems Biology relate, mathematically, to the computational characteristics of automata derived from them, and their internal symmetry structures to computational power. Finite discrete automata models of biological systems such as the lac operon, Krebs cycle, and p53-mdm2 genetic regulation constructed from Systems Biology models have canonically associated algebraic structures { transformation semigroups. These contain permutation groups (local substructures exhibiting symmetry) that correspond to "pools of reversibility". These natural subsystems are related to one another in a hierarchical manner by the notion of "weak control ". We present natural subsystems arising from several biological examples and their weak control hierarchies in detail. Finite simple non-abelian groups (SNAGs) are found in biological examples and can be harnessed to realize nitary universal computation. This allows ensembles of cells to achieve any desired finitary computational transformation, depending on external inputs, via suitably constrained interactions. Based on this, interaction machines that grow and change their structure recursively are introduced and applied, providing a natural model of computation driven by interactions.Peer reviewe
