Properties of a beam splitter entangler with Gaussian input states
An explicit formula is given for the quantity of entanglement in the output
state of a beam splitter, given the squeezed vacuum states input in each mode.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Multipartite entangled coherent states
We propose a scheme for generating multipartite entangled coherent states via
entanglement swapping, with an example of a physical realization in ion traps.
Bipartite entanglement of these multipartite states is quantified by the
concurrence. We also use the --tangle to compute multipartite entanglement
for certain systems. Finally we establish that these results for entanglement
can be applied to more general multipartite entangled nonorthogonal states.Comment: 7 pages, two figures. We added more detail discussions on the
generation of multipartite entangled coherent states and multipartite
entangelemen
Symplectic geometry of entanglement
We present a description of entanglement in composite quantum systems in
terms of symplectic geometry. We provide a symplectic characterization of sets
of equally entangled states as orbits of group actions in the space of states.
In particular, using Kostant-Sternberg theorem, we show that separable states
form a unique Kaehler orbit, whereas orbits of entanglement states are
characterized by different degrees of degeneracy of the canonical symplectic
form on the complex projective space. The degree of degeneracy may be thus used
as a new geometric measure of entanglement and we show how to calculate it for
various multiparticle systems providing also simple criteria of separability.
The presented method is general and can be applied also under different
additional symmetry conditions stemming, eg. from the indistinguishability of
particles.Comment: LaTex, 31 pages, typos correcte
Theoretical uncertainties in sparticle mass predictions from computational tools
We estimate the current theoretical uncertainty in sparticle mass predictions
by comparing several state-of-the-art computations within the minimal
supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We find that the theoretical uncertainty
is comparable to the expected statistical errors from the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC), and significantly larger than those expected from a future e+e- Linear
Collider (LC). We quantify the theoretical uncertainty on relevant sparticle
observables for both LHC and LC, and show that the value of the error is
significantly dependent upon the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking parameters. We
also present the theoretical uncertainty induced in fundamental-scale SUSY
breaking parameters when they are fitted from LHC measurements. Two regions of
the SUSY parameter space where accurate predictions are particularly difficult
are examined in detail: the large tan(beta) and focus point regimes.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; comment added pointing out that 2-loop QCD
corrections to mt are incorrect in some of the programs investigated. We give
the correct formul
Flavour violating squark and gluino decays
We consider scenarios with large flavour violating entries in the squark mass
matrices focusing on the mixing between second and third generation squarks.
These entries govern both, flavour violating low energy observables on the one
hand and squark and gluino decays on the other hand. We first discuss the
constraints on the parameter space due to the recent data on B mesons from the
B factories and Tevatron. We then consider flavour violating squark and gluino
decays and show that they can still be typically of order 10% despite the
stringent constraints from low energy data. Finally we briefly comment on the
impact for searches and parameter determinations at future collider experiments
such as the upcoming LHC or a future International Linear Collider.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, references update
Defining and characterizing team resilience in elite sport
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to develop a definition of team resilience and to identify the resilient characteristics of elite sport teams.
Design and Method: Focus groups consisting of a total of 31 participants were conducted with five elite teams from a range of sports. An interpretive thematic analysis using inductive and deductive reasoning was employed to analyze the data.
Results and Conclusions: Team resilience was defined as a dynamic, psychosocial process which protects a group of individuals from the potential negative effect of the stressors they collectively encounter. It comprises of processes whereby team members use their individual and combined resources to positively adapt when experiencing adversity. Findings revealed four main resilient characteristics of elite sport teams: group structure, mastery approaches, social capital, and collective efficacy. This study extends resilience research in sport psychology by providing greater conceptual clarity of resilience at a team level. The implications of the findings for those conducting research in this area and for those consulting with elite sport teams are discussed
Soliton back-action evading measurement using spectral filtering
We report on a back-action evading (BAE) measurement of the photon number of
fiber optical solitons operating in the quantum regime. We employ a novel
detection scheme based on spectral filtering of colliding optical solitons. The
measurements of the BAE criteria demonstrate significant quantum state
preparation and transfer of the input signal to the signal and probe outputs
exiting the apparatus, displaying the quantum-nondemolition (QND) behavior of
the experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Gravitational Lensing by Black Holes
We review the theoretical aspects of gravitational lensing by black holes,
and discuss the perspectives for realistic observations. We will first treat
lensing by spherically symmetric black holes, in which the formation of
infinite sequences of higher order images emerges in the clearest way. We will
then consider the effects of the spin of the black hole, with the formation of
giant higher order caustics and multiple images. Finally, we will consider the
perspectives for observations of black hole lensing, from the detection of
secondary images of stellar sources and spots on the accretion disk to the
interpretation of iron K-lines and direct imaging of the shadow of the black
hole.Comment: Invited article for the GRG special issue on lensing (P. Jetzer, Y.

Pion Freeze-Out Time in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV/c Studied via pi-/pi+ and K-/K+ Ratios
The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in
Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment
through the study of the pi-/pi+ and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of
transverse mass. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant transverse mass
dependence, the pi-/pi+ ratio is enhanced at small transverse mass values with
an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located
near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the
pi-/pi+ ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in
which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints
on the time of the pion freeze-out.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure
Search for antihelium in cosmic rays
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle
Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320
and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity
range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper
limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figure
