Patterns and universals of mate poaching across 53 nations : the effects of sex, culture, and personality on romantically attracting another personâs partner
As part of the International Sexuality Description Project, 16,954 participants from 53 nations were administered an anonymous survey about experiences with romantic attraction. Mate poaching--romantically attracting someone who is already in a relationship--was most common in Southern Europe, South America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and was relatively infrequent in Africa, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Evolutionary and social-role hypotheses received empirical support. Men were more likely than women to report having made and succumbed to short-term poaching across all regions, but differences between men and women were often smaller in more gender-egalitarian regions. People who try to steal another's mate possess similar personality traits across all regions, as do those who frequently receive and succumb to the poaching attempts by others. The authors conclude that human mate-poaching experiences are universally linked to sex, culture, and the robust influence of personal dispositions.peer-reviewe

samples used in this study.Gender differences in the dismissing form of adult romantic attachment were investigated as part of the International Sexuality Description Projectâa survey study of 17,804 people from 62 cultural regions. Contrary to research findings previously reported in Western cultures, we found that men were not significantly more dismissing than women across all cultural regions. Gender differences in dismissing romantic attachment were evident in most cultures, but were typically only small to moderate in magnitude. Looking across cultures, the degree of gender differentiation in dismissing romantic attachment was predictably associated with sociocultural indicators. Generally, these associations supported evolutionary theories of romantic attachment, with smaller gender differences evident in cultures with highâstress and highâfertility reproductive environments. Social role theories of human sexuality received less support in that more progressive sexârole ideologies and national gender equity indexes were not crossâculturally linked as expected to smaller gender differences in dismissing romantic attachment.peer-reviewe
Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world
Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.
Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States.
Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis.
Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

During the night from 18th to 19th of December 2004, at the Pyreneans Hospital Centre at PAU (France), Chantal Klimaszewski et Lucette Gariod, a nurse and her auxiliary, two of us, have been killed wildly and found by morning team. CUMPâs members (Medico-Psychological Urgency Cell) but also colleagues of the two victims, we were called at the very beginning to intervene. The question was, in accordance with of the CUMPâs missions, to help our fellow workers, families, and all participants with a psychological care, and we were also shocked by the tragedy. Over and above this the killer was a hospital patient (thatâs what the investigation had discovered)Weâll try a narrative of our action by one of the departmentâs members after some informationâs about CUMPSâs originâs and missionâs nature. This narrative is a debriefing; a real debriefing; limited in the theory because feelings and emotional experiences are showing though facts.Probably we are not objective enough about this experience, neither about our instantaneous action to propose you a deeply analysis. So we propose you some interrogations and our point of view, about the pertinence to intervene and the way that we answered at the request urgency action
Interpenetrated Si-HPMC/alginate hydrogels as a potential scaffold for human tissue regeneration
International audienceInterpenetrated gels of biocompatible polysaccharides alginate and silanized hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (Si-HPMC) have been studied in order to assess their potential as scaffolds for the regeneration of human tissues. Si-HPMC networks were formed by reduction of the pH to neutral and alginate networks were formed by progressive in situ release of Ca+. Linear and non-linear mechanical properties of the mixed gels at different polymer and calcium concentrations were compared with those of the corresponding single gels. The alginate/Si-HPMC gels were found to be stiffer than pure Si-HPMC gels, but weaker and more deformable than pure alginate gels. No significant difference was found for the maximum stress at rupture measured during compression for all these gels. The degrees of swelling or contraction in excess water at pH 7 as well as the release of Ca2+ was measured as a function of time. Pure alginate gels contracted by as much as 50 % and showed syneresis, which was much reduced or even eliminated for mixed gels. The important release of Ca2+ upon ageing for pure alginate gels was much reduced for the mixed gels. Furthermore, results of cytocompatibility assays indicated that there was no cytotoxicity of Si- HPMC/alginate hydrogels in 2D and 3D culture of human SW1353 cells. The results show that using interpenetrated Si-HPMC/alginate gels has clear advantages over the use of single gels for application in tissue regeneration
