    Motion Minima for Different Directions in Color Space

    AbstractWe have used the minimum-motion stimulus of Cavanagh, MacLeod and Anstis (1987) [Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 4, 1428–1438] to examine how signals along different directions in color space interact in motion perception. Stimuli were pairs of counterphasing gratings combined 90 deg out of phase in both space and time and modulated along different color-luminance axes. The axis for one of the gratings was fixed, while the axis for the second was varied so as to null perceived motion in the stimulus. The motion nulls show that observers are sensitive to motion signals carried by each of the cardinal directions of color space [an achromatic axis and L-M and S-(L + M) chromatic axes], but that signals along different cardinal axes are not combined to yield a net direction of motion. Pairing an achromatic and chromatic grating resulted in a motion null regardless of the relative or overall contrast of the two gratings, while the null directions for intermediate axes shifted depending on contrast. This result points to the special status of the luminance and chromatic axes. However, our results do not reveal a special pair of axes within the equiluminant plane. When contrasts along the cardinal axes are scaled for equal multiples of their respective detection thresholds, the L-M and S chromatic contrasts contribute roughly equally to the perceived motion, but are many times weaker than luminance contrast. Moreover, sensitivity to luminance motion is little affected by the presence of chromatic contrast, whereas sensitivity to chromatic motion is strongly masked by either luminance or chromatic contrast. These asymmetric interactions suggest that the motion of the luminance and chromatic components is encoded in qualitatively different ways. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd

    Identification of a 33-kilodalton immunodominant antigen of Trypanosoma congolense as a cysteine protease

    A 33-kDa protein of Trypanosoma congolense is a major antigen in infected cattle and the production of antibody to this antigen appeared to correlate with enhanced resistance to trypanosomiasis [4]. Immunoelectron microscopy using a monoclonal antibody (mAb 4C5) raised against the 33-kDa antigen showed a lysosomal localisation, similar to that of a previously described 32-kDa cysteine protease of T. congolense. Both mAb 4C5 and anti-33 kDa antibody from infected cattle bound on Western blots to the cysteine protease that had been purified by affinity chromatography on cystatin-Sepharose. Sepharose-coupled mAb 4C5 was used to affinity purify the antigen from bloodstream forms of T. congolense. On sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), the affinity-purified antigen had a molecular mass of 33 kDa under non-reducing conditions, and 40 kDa under reducing conditions. Anti-33-kDa antibody from infected cattle bound to both non-reduced and reduced affinity-purified antigen on Western blots. Serum from a rabbit immunised with the biochemically purified enzyme also bound the affinity-purified antigen. The affinity-purified antigen displayed proteolytic activity in fibrinogen-containing SDS-PAGE and against Azocoll. It hydrolysed benzyloxycarbonyl-Phe-Arg-7-amino-methyl coumarin (Z-Phe-Arg-NHMec) with a K, similar to that of the biochemically purified enzyme. Proteolytic and peptidolytic activities of the antigen were inhibited by the inhibitors of cysteine proteases, cystatin and trans-epoxysuccinyl-L-leucyl-amido (4-guanidin0)butane (E-64). On two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, the antigen displayed similar characteristics to those of the biochemically purified enzyme.     Evaluation of effectiveness and efficiency of wild bird surveillance for avian influenza

    This study aimed to assess which method of wild waterbird surveillance had the greatest probability of detecting highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 during a period of surveillance activity, the cost of each method was also considered. Lake Constance is a major wintering centre for migratory waterbirds and in 2006 it was the site of an HPAI H5N1 epidemic in wild birds. Avian influenza surveillance was conducted using harmonised approaches in the three countries around the lake, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, from 2006–2009. The surveillance consisted of testing birds sampled by the following methods: live birds caught in traps, birds killed by hunters, birds caught in fishing nets, dead birds found by the public and catching live Mute Swans (Cygnus olor); sentinel flocks of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were also used. Scenario tree analysis was performed including sensitivity analysis, followed by assessment of cost-effectiveness. Results indicated that if HPAI H5N1 was present at 1% prevalence and assuming HPAI resulted in bird mortality, sampling dead birds found by the public and sentinel surveillance were the most sensitive approaches despite residual uncertainty over some parameters. The uncertainty over the mortality of infected birds was an influential factor. Sampling birds found dead was most cost-effective, but strongly dependent on mortality and awareness of the public. Trapping live birds was least cost-effective. Based on our results, we recommend that future HPAI H5N1 surveillance around Lake Constance should prioritise sentinel surveillance and, if high mortality is expected, the testing of birds found dead

    Religious Values, Practices and Pregnancy Outcomes: A Comparison of the Impact of Sect and Mainstream Christian Affiliation

    In this report 6566 women enrolled in the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) were separated into three groups; members of religious sects, Christians who attend church frequently and Christians who are infrequent attenders. These three groups, respectively labelled Christian sects, Christian attenders and lukewarm Christians were compared on a number of social background, lifestyle and pregnancy outcome variables. The sect members appeared to have the most favourable health, lifestyles and healthy babies at delivery, though this latter finding appears attributable to specific characteristics of the mother and her lifestyle. On most measures the children of lukewarm Christians appear to manifest the worst health while Christian attenders form a group whose children's health is between that of sect members and lukewarm Christians

    Landscape-scale drivers of glacial ecosystem change in the montane forests of the eastern Andean flank, Ecuador

    Understanding the impact of landscape-scale disturbance events during the last glacial period is vital in accu- rately reconstructing the ecosystem dynamics of montane environments. Here, a sedimentary succession from the tropical montane cloud forest of the eastern Andean flank of Ecuador provides evidence of the role of non- climate drivers of vegetation change (volcanic events, fire regime and herbivory) during the late-Pleistocene. Multiproxy analysis (pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal, geochemistry and carbon content) of the se- diments, radiocarbon dated to ca. 45–42 ka, provide a snap shot of the depositional environment, vegetation community and non-climate drivers of ecosystem dynamics. The geomorphology of the Vinillos study area, along with the organic‐carbon content, and aquatic remains suggest deposition took place near a valley floor in a swamp or shallow water environment. The pollen assemblage initially composed primarily of herbaceous types (Poaceae-Asteraceae-Solanaceae) is replaced by assemblages characterised by Andean forest taxa, (first Melastomataceae-Weinmannia-Ilex, and later, Alnus-Hedyosmum-Myrica). The pollen assemblages have no modern analogues in the tropical montane cloud forest of Ecuador. High micro-charcoal and rare macro-charcoal abundances co-occur with volcanic tephra deposits suggesting transportation from extra-local regions and that volcanic eruptions were an important source of ignition in the wider glacial landscape. The presence of the coprophilous fungi Sporormiella reveals the occurrence of herbivores in the glacial montane forest landscape. Pollen analysis indicates a stable regional vegetation community, with changes in vegetation population co- varying with large volcanic tephra deposits suggesting that the structure of glacial vegetation at Vinillos was driven by volcanic activity

    Effect of summer grazing on welfare of dairy cows reared in mountain tie-stall barns

    Traditional mountain farms have an important economic, social and environmental role. The Alps management system for dairy cows consists of animals kept indoors from autumn to spring, mostly in tie-stalls, and moved to mountain pasture in summer. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of mountain summer grazing on the welfare of dairy cows housed in tie-stall barns. Twenty-four farms were considered. In twelve of them, animals were reared in tie-stalls and moved to mountain pasture for three months in summer; they were visited three times: (i) four weeks before grazing during the indoor period in the stall; (ii) about three weeks after the start of grazing; and (iii) in the stall, in autumn, at least three weeks after returning from grazing. The other twelve farms kept the animals in tie-stalls all year; they were visited once in autumn. Data were collected following a protocol that considers animal-based measures and structure information on the basis of Quality Welfare Consortium® indications. Data allowed the calculation of both the Animal Needs Index score (ANI 35L) and an overall assessment of the cows' welfare obtained from three general aspects: housing, animal's physical condition, and animal's behaviour. Summer grazing had a significant positive effect on injuries, lameness and animal's rising duration but a negative effect on faeces consistency. Moreover, a reduction of tongue playing was observed. The ANI 35L and the overall assessment did not show significant differences linked to summer grazing, which tended to have a positive but temporary effect on animal behaviour
