The house by the sea — Maison en Bord de Mer — formed the basis of Eileen Gray’s spatial research, in this case applied to a vacation residence. The subsequent sequences of programmatic and typological researches into summer vacation facilities exemplifies Eileen Gray’s interest in generalizing the comprehension and acceptance of compact places of abode during vacations. Her ability to thoroughly project a comprehensive and mutually supportive program for a large organization such as a vacation center was the ultimate result of these paths of research. Even though the project was never realized, its timing and documentation proves Eileen Gray’s pioneering spirit
Descriptions of two new species of Tarachoptera from Burmese amber (Insecta, Amphiesmenoptera: Tarachoptera)

Error linear complexity measures for multisequences
Complexity measures for sequences over finite fields, such as the linear complexity and the k-error linear complexity, play an important role in cryptology. Recent developments in stream ciphers point towards an interest in word-based stream ciphers, which require the study of the complexity of multisequences. We introduce various options for error linear complexity measures for multisequences. For finite multisequences as well as for periodic multisequences with prime period, we present formulas for the number of multisequences with given error linear complexity for several cases, and we present lower bounds for the expected error linear complexity
Semi-supervised classification of polarimetric SAR images using Markov random field and two-level Wishart mixture model
In this work, we propose a semi-supervised method for classification of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. In the proposed method, a 2-level mixture model is constructed by associating each component density with a unique Wishart mixture model (instead of a single Wishart distribution as that in the conventional Wishart mixture model). This modeling scheme facilitates the accurate description of data for the categories, each of which includes multiple subcategories. The learning algorithm for the proposed model is developed based on variational inference and all the update equations are obtained in closed form. In the learning algorithm, the spatial interdependencies are incorporated by imposing a Markov random field prior on the indicator variable to alleviate the speckle effect on the classification results. The experimental results demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed method compared with the unsupervised version and supervised version of the proposed model as well as an existing method for semi-supervised classification
Effects of phthalate exposure on asthma may be mediated through alterations in DNA methylation
Background: phthalates may increase the asthma risk in children. Mechanisms underlying this association remain to be addressed. This study assesses the effect of phthalate exposures on epigenetic changes and the role of epigenetic changes for asthma. In the first step, urine and blood samples from 256 children of the Childhood Environment and Allergic diseases Study (CEAS) were analyzed. Urine 5OH-MEHP levels were quantified as an indicator of exposure, and asthma information was collected. DNA methylation (DNA-M) was measured by quantitative PCR. In the screening part of step 1, DNA-M of 21 potential human candidate genes suggested by a toxicogenomic data were investigated in 22 blood samples. Then, in the testing part of step 1, positively screened genes were tested in a larger sample of 256 children and then validated by protein measurements. In step 2, we replicated the association between phthalate exposure and gene-specific DNA-M in 54 children in the phthalate contaminated food event. In step 3, the risk of DNA-M for asthma was tested in 256 children from CEAS and corroborated in 270 children from the Isle of Wight (IOW) birth cohort. Results: differential methylation in three genes (AR, TNF?, and IL-4) was identified through screening. Testing in 256 children showed that methylation of the TNF? gene promoter was lower when children had higher urine 5OH-MEHP values (??=??0.138, P?=?0.040). Functional validation revealed that TNF? methylation was inversely correlated with TNF? protein levels (??=??0.18, P?=?0.041). In an additional sample of 54 children, we corroborated that methylation of the TNF? gene promoter was lower when urine 5OH-MEHP concentrations were higher. Finally, we found that a lower methylation of 5?CGI region of TNF? was associated with asthma in 256 CEAS children (OR?=?2.15, 95% CI?=?1.01 to 4.62). We replicated this in 270 children from the IOW birth cohort study. Methylation of the CpG site cg10717214 was negatively associated with asthma, when children had ‘AA’ or ‘AG’ genotype of the TNF? single nucleotide rs1800610. Conclusions: effects of phthalate exposure on asthma may be mediated through alterations in DNA methylatio
Enhanced effective mass in doped SrTiO3 and related perovskites
The effective mass is one of the main factors determining the Seebeck
coefficient and electronic conductivity. Nb-doping increases the effective mass
because of two reasons, lattice constants increase and electronic effects. In
this ab-initio study the effective mass is estimated from the curvature of
electronic bands and it could be clarified that the deformation of SrTiO3
crystals has a significant influence on bandgap and effective DOS and band
mass, which are both in excellent agreement to experimental data. However, the
electronic effect due to the e2g- band flattening near the Gamma-point due to
Nb-doping up to 0.2 at% is the main factor for the increase of effective mass.
Doping of La shows a linear decrease of the effective mass; this is explained
by the different surrounding of A- and B-site. Substitution of other elements
like Ba on the A-site and V on the B-site in SrTiO3 were also found to increase
the effective mass.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 3 table
