    [[abstract]]The spin-splitting energies of the conduction band for ideal wurtzite materials are calculated within the nearest-neighbor tight-binding method. It is found that ideal wurtzite bulk inversion asymmetry yields not only a spin-degenerate line (along the kz axis) but also a minimum-spin-splitting surface, which can be regarded as a spin-degenerate surface in the form of bkz2−k‖2 = 0 (b ≈ 4) near the Γ point. This phenomenon is referred to as the Dresselhaus effect (defined as the cubic-in-k term) in bulk wurtzite materials because it generates a term γwz(bkz2−k‖2)(σxky−σykx) in the two-band k∙p Hamiltonian.[[booktype]]紙

    Precipitation controls on nutrient budgets in subtropical and tropical forests and the implications under changing climate

    Biological, geological and hydrological drivers collectively control forest biogeochemical cycling. However, based on a close examination of recent literature, we argue that the role of hydrological control particularly precipitation on nutrient budgets is significantly underestimated in subtropical and tropical forests, hindering our predictions of future forest nutrient status under a changing climate in these systems. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed two decades of monthly nutrient input and output data in precipitation and streamwater from a subtropical forested watershed in Taiwan, one of the few sites that has long-term nutrient input-output data in the tropics and subtropics. The results showed that monthly input and output of all ions and budgets (output – input) of most ions were positively correlated with precipitation quantity and there was a surprisingly greater net ion export during the wet growing season, indicating strong precipitation control on the nutrient budget. The strong precipitation control is also supported by the divergence of acidic precipitation and near neutral acidity of streamwater, with the former being independent from precipitation quantity but the latter being positively related to precipitation quantity. An additional synthesis of annual precipitation quantity and nutrient budgets of 32 forests across the globe showed a strong correlation between precipitation quantity and nutrient output-input budget, indicating that strong precipitation control is ubiquitous at the global scale and is particularly important in the humid tropical and subtropical forests. Our results imply that climate change could directly affect ecosystem nutrient cycling in the tropics through changes in precipitation pattern and amount

    Different Brain Network Activations Induced by Modulation and Nonmodulation Laser Acupuncture

    The aim of this study is to compare the distinct cerebral activation with continued wave (CW) and 10 Hz-modulated wave (MW) stimulation during low-level laser acupuncture. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies were performed to investigate the possible mechanism during laser acupuncture stimulation at the left foot's yongquan (K1) acupoint. There are 12 healthy right-handed volunteers for each type of laser stimulation (10-Hz-Modulated wave: 8 males and 4 females; continued wave: 9 males and 3 females). The analysis of multisubjects in this experiment was applied by random-effect (RFX) analysis. In CW groups, significant activations were found within the inferior parietal lobule, the primary somatosensory cortex, and the precuneus of left parietal lobe. Medial and superior frontal gyrus of left frontal lobe were also aroused. In MW groups, significant activations were found within the primary motor cortex and middle temporal gyrus of left hemisphere and bilateral cuneus. Placebo stimulation did not show any activation. Most activation areas were involved in the functions of memory, attention, and self-consciousness. The results showed the cerebral hemodynamic responses of two laser acupuncture stimulation modes and implied that its mechanism was not only based upon afferent sensory information processing, but that it also had the hemodynamic property altered during external stimulation

    Changing trends in antimicrobial resistance of major bacterial pathogens, 1985–2005: A study from a medical center in northern Taiwan

    BackgroundAntimicrobial resistance is a major health problem worldwide. We evaluated the antimicrobial resistance trends of 16 major bacterial pathogens at a tertiary medical center in northern Taiwan.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of annual summary documents for antimicrobial susceptibility of clinically isolated gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria from 1985 to 2005. The numbers of isolates and susceptibilities were calculated for three 7-year periods: first period, 1985–1991; second period, 1992–1998; and the third period, 1999–2005.ResultsDuring the 21-year period, 219,715 bacterial pathogens were identified. A significant increase in incidence over time was found for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S epidermidis, penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, erythromycin-resistant S pneumoniae, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, cefotaxime/ceftriaxone-resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Additionally, a significant increase in ciprofloxacin resistance rates over time from 1996 to 2005 was noted for E coli, Enterobacter cloacae, and A baumannii (through 1997 to 2005). However, a significant decrease in erythromycin resistance rate with time from 1999 to 2005 was found for Groups A and B streptococci, non-A, B, D streptococci, and S pneumoniae.ConclusionResistance to antimicrobial agents increased rapidly in the past two decades in Taiwan and has become very common in major bacterial pathogens. Continuous enforcement of policies to limit use of antimicrobial agents and active surveillance of antimicrobial resistance through a nationwide system are both warranted

    Temporal and Spatial Variations in spatial variations in symbiont communities of catch bowl coral Isopora palifera (Scleractinia: Acroporidae) on reefs in Kenting National Park, Taiwan

    Acclimatization through Symbiodinium shuffling is one of potential mechanisms in reef-building corals to survive environmental stress. In our previous study, the catch bowl coral Isopora palifera in Tantzei Bay (TZB), Nanwan, Kenting National Park (KNP), southern Taiwan was demonstrated to shuffle thermal-tolerant Symbiodinium D1a and thermal-sensitive Symbiodinium C3 in response to seasonal variations in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in 2000 and 2001. In this study, we reexamined the temporal dynamics of the Symbiodinium community of I. palifera in TZB in 2006-2009. In addition, spatial variations in Symbiodinium communities in I. palifera were also examined at 6 other sites of Nanwan, KNP in 2009, including a site located at a nuclear power plant outlet (NPP-OL) in southern Taiwan with a yearly mean SST 0.6-1.5 degrees C higher compared to the other sites. Phylotyping and DNA sequence analyses of Symbiodinium ribosomal 28S and ITS2 markers showed that I. palifera colonies at TZB continued to show seasonal shuffling, but shifted to thermal-sensitive type C3 dominant in 2006-2009. This differed from the symbiont community originally dominated by the thermal-tolerant Symbiodinium D1a in 2000 and 2001 after the 1998 mass-bleaching event. Significant differences in spatial variations of the symbiont community in Nanwan were detected with I. palifera colonies at the NPP-OL dominated by Symbiodinium D1a. Our study results suggest that I. palifera can acclimatize to SST anomalies by shuffling to thermal-tolerant Symbiodinium D1a and can revert to thermal-sensitive C3 when the stress disappears, but will maintain the thermally tolerant Symbiodinium D1a as the dominant symbiont if the heat stress continues

    Timing of CFTR Pore Opening and Structure of Its Transition State

    In CFTR, the chloride ion channel mutated in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, pore opening is coupled to ATP-binding-induced dimerization of two cytosolic nucleotide binding domains (NBDs) and closure to dimer disruption following ATP hydrolysis. CFTR opening rate, unusually slow because of its high-energy transition state, is further slowed by CF mutation DeltaF508. Here, we exploit equilibrium gating of hydrolysis-deficient CFTR mutant D1370N and apply rate-equilibrium free-energy relationship analysis to estimate relative timing of opening movements in distinct protein regions. We find clear directionality of motion along the longitudinal protein axis and identify an opening transition-state structure with the NBD dimer formed but the pore still closed. Thus, strain at the NBD/pore-domain interface, the DeltaF508 mutation locus, underlies the energetic barrier for opening. Our findings suggest a therapeutic opportunity to stabilize this transition-state structure pharmacologically in DeltaF508-CFTR to correct its opening defect, an essential step toward restoring CFTR function

    Correlation of virulence genes to clinical manifestations and outcome in patients with Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis bacteremia

    Background/PurposeStreptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) is increasingly recognized as a human pathogen responsible for invasive infection and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). The pathogen possesses virulence genes that resemble those found in Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS). We analyzed the association between these specific toxic genes, clinical presentations, and outcome in patients with SDSE infections.MethodsPatients (older than 18 years) with community-acquired invasive bacteremia caused by SDSE bacteremia who were undergoing treatment at China Medical University Hospital from June 2007 to December 2010 were included in this study. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction was performed to identify virulence genes of the SDSE isolates. Demographic data, clinical presentations, and outcome in patients with SDSE infections were reviewed and analyzed.ResultsForty patients with 41 episodes of SDSE bacteremia were reviewed. The median age of the patients with SDSE infection was 69.7 years; 55% were female and 78% had underlying diseases. Malignancy (13, 33%) and diabetes mellitus (13, 33%) were the most common comorbidities. The 30-day mortality rate was 12%. Compared with the survivors, the non-survivors had a higher rate of diabetes mellitus (80% vs. 26%), liver cirrhosis (60% vs.11%), shock (60% vs.17%), STSS (60% vs. 8%), and a high Pittsburgh bacteremia score >4 (40% vs. 6%). Most isolates had scpA, ska, saga, and slo genes, whereas speC, speG, speH, speI, speK, smez, and ssa genes were not detected. speA gene was identified only in one patient with STSS (1/6, 17%). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin, cefotaxime, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, vancomycin, and linezolid.ConclusionIn invasive SDSE infections, most isolates carry putative virulence genes, such as scpA, ska, saga, and slo. Clinical SDSE isolates in Taiwan remain susceptible to penicillin cefotaxime, and levofloxacin
