Interstellar Sodium and Calcium Absorption toward SN 2011dh in M51
We present high-resolution echelle observations of SN 2011dh, which exploded
in the nearby, nearly face-on spiral galaxy M51. Our data, acquired on three
nights when the supernova was near maximum brightness, reveal multiple
absorption components in Na I D and Ca II H and K, which we identify with
gaseous material in the Galactic disk or low halo and in the disk and halo of
M51. The M51 components span a velocity range of over 140 km s^-1, extending
well beyond the range exhibited by H I 21 cm emission at the position of the
supernova. Since none of the prominent Na I or Ca II components appear to
coincide with the peak in H I emission, the supernova may lie just in front of
the bulk of the H I disk. The Na I/Ca II ratios for the components with the
most extreme positive and negative velocities relative to the disk are ~1.0,
similar to those for more quiescent components, suggesting that the absorption
originates in relatively cool gas. Production scenarios involving a galactic
fountain and/or tidal interactions between M51 and its companion would be
consistent with these results. The overall weakness of Na I D absorption in the
direction of SN 2011dh confirms a low foreground and host galaxy extinction for

Hidden magnetic order in CuNCN
We report a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the
quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet CuNCN. Based on magnetization measurements
above room temperature as well as muon spin rotation and electron spin
resonance measurements, we unequivocally establish the localized Cu+2-based
magnetism and the magnetic transition around 70 K, both controversially
discussed in the previous literature. Thermodynamic data conform to the
uniform-spin-chain model with a nearest-neighbor intrachain coupling of about
2300 K, in remarkable agreement with the microscopic magnetic model based on
density functional theory band-structure calculations. Using exact
diagonalization and the coupled-cluster method, we derive a collinear
antiferromagnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered moment of about 0.4
mu_B, indicating strong quantum fluctuations inherent to this
quasi-one-dimensional spin system. We re-analyze the available
neutron-scattering data, and conclude that they are not sufficient to resolve
or disprove the magnetic order in CuNCN. By contrast, spectroscopic techniques
indeed show signatures of long-range magnetic order below 70 K, yet with a
rather broad distribution of internal field probed by implanted muons. We
contemplate the possible structural origin of this effect and emphasize
peculiar features of the microstructure studied with synchrotron powder x-ray

Lopsided Galaxies, Weak Interactions and Boosting the Star Formation Rate
To investigate the link between weak tidal interactions in disk galaxies and
the boosting of their recent star formation, we obtain images and spatially
integrated spectra (3615A < lambda < 5315A) for 40 late-type spiral galaxies
(Sab-Sbc) with varying degrees of lopsidedness (a dynamical indicator of weak
interactions). We quantify lopsidedness as the amplitude of the m=1
Fourier component of the azimuthal surface brightness distribution, averaged
over a range of radii. We compare the young stellar content, quantified by
EW(H\delta_abs) and the strength of the 4000 Angstrom break (D_4000), with
lopsidedness and find a 3-4 sigma correlation between the two. We also find a
3.2 sigma correlation between EW(H\beta_emission) and lopsidedness. Using the
evolutionary population synthesis code of Bruzual & Charlot we model the
spectra as an ``underlying population'' and a superimposed ``boost population''
with the aim of constraining the fractional boost in the SFR averaged over the
past 0.5 Gyr (the characteristic lifetime of lopsidedness). From the difference
in both EW(H\delta_abs) and D_4000 between the most and least symmetric thirds
of our sample, we infer that ~ 1x10^9 M_solar of stars are formed over the
duration of a lopsided event in addition to the ``underlying'' SFH (assuming a
final galactic stellar mass of 10^10 M_solar). This corresponds to a factor of
8 increase in the SFR over the past 5x10^8 years. For the nuclear spectra, all
of the above correlations except D_4000 vs. are weaker than for the disk,
indicating that in lopsided galaxies, the SF boost is not dominated by the

A low H I column density filament in NGC 2403 : signature of interaction or accretion
Date of acceptance: 12/07/2014Observed H i accretion around nearby galaxies can only account for a fraction of the gas supply needed to sustain the currently observed star formation rates. It is possible that additional accretion occurs in the form of low column density cold flows, as predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation. To constrain the presence and properties of such flows, we present deep H i observations obtained with the NRAO Green Bank Telescope of an area measuring 4° × 4° around NGC 2403. These observations, with a 5σ detection limit of 2.4 × 1018 cm-2 over a 20 km s-1 linewidth, reveal a low column density, extended cloud outside the main H i disk, about 17′ (~ 16 kpc or ~ 2 R25) to the NW of the center of the galaxy. The total H i mass of the cloud is 6.3 × 106 M⊙, or 0.15 percent of the total H i mass of NGC 2403. The cloud is associated with an 8 kpc anomalous-velocity H i filament in the inner disk, that was previously observed in deep VLA observations. We discuss several scenarios for the origin of the cloud, and conclude that it is either accreting from the intergalactic medium, or is the result of a minor interaction with a neigboring dwarf galaxyPeer reviewe

The dynamics of polymers on the nm and ns scales inside responsive microgels was probed by means of Neutron Spin Echo (NSE) experiments. Four different microgels were studied: poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAAM) microgels, a P(NIPAM-co-DEAAM) copolymer microgel and a core-shell microgel with a PDEAAM core and a PNIPAM shell. These four different microgel systems were investigated in a D(2)O/CD(3)OD solvent mixture with a molar CD(3)OD fraction of x(MeOD) = 0.2 at 10 °C. The PNIPAM and the P(NIPAM-co-DEAAM) microgels are in the collapsed state under these conditions. They behave as solid diffusing objects with only very small additional contributions from internal motions. The PDEAAM particle is swollen under these conditions and mainly Zimm segmental dynamics can be detected in the intermediate scattering function at high momentum transfer. A cross-over to a collective diffusive motion is found for smaller q-values. The shell of the PDEAAM-core-PNIPAM-shell particle is collapsed, which leads to a static contribution to S(q,t); the core, however, is swollen and Zimm segmental dynamics are observed. However, the contributions of the Zimm segmental dynamics to the scattering function are smaller as compared to the pure PDEAAM particle. Interestingly the values of the apparent solvent viscosities inside the microgels as obtained from the NSE experiments are higher than for the bulk solvent. In addition different values were obtained for the PDEAAM microgel, and the PDEAAM-core of the PDEAAM-core-PNIPAM-shell particle, respectively. We attribute the strongly increased viscosity in the PDEAAM particle to enhanced inhomogeneities, which are induced by the swelling of the particle. The different viscosity inside the PDEAAM-core of the PDEAAM-core-PNIPAM-shell microgel could be due to a confinement effect: the collapsed PNIPAM-shell restricts the swelling of the PDEAAM-core and may modify the hydrodynamic interactions in this restricted environment inside the microgel
