    Deterritorializing Dichotomies in Teacher Induction: A (Post)Ethnographic Study of Un/Becoming an Elementary Science Teacher

    Un/becoming an elementary science teacher is a dynamic phenomenon, yet the process is often intentionally limited to several taken-for-granted assumptions in research on science teacher induction. Inherent to research on beginning science teacher induction is also the construction of certain truths beginning science teachers, science teacher educators, and researchers think, feel, and live. This study complicates prevailing truths shaping notions of beginner, novice, induction, and traditions of inquiry as an ethicopolitical commitment to those implicated. In doing so, this study illuminates more expansive ways science teacher educators and those studying induction might study and understand the experiences of beginning science teachers from both humanist and post-humanist ontological paradigms. To provide an intimate, in-depth, and multidimensional analysis of elementary science teacher induction experiences, feminist post-structural theory was employed throughout the study. This perspective further informed the post-foundational ethnographic practices shaping the structure of the study as an always-already emergent process. Taking form as a (post)ethnographic inquiry, the study specifically examined the induction experiences of two beginning elementary science teachers alongside three ontological dichotomies in research shaping science teacher induction: (a) the beginning science teacher subject; (b) the concept of induction; and (c) the mode of inquiry. Employing both conventional humanist qualitative methods and post-qualitative inquiry, this study reveals the multifaceted ways in which beginning elementary science teacher subjectivity, research assumptions, and definitions framing the very notion of elementary science teacher induction intra-act. Offering a series of provocations as lines of flight, researchers of science teacher induction and science teacher educators might begin to re-conceptualize ways beginning science teachers un/become known and get re/produced

    Biocompatible micellar nanoparticles provide a platform to increase drug solubility, increasing cellular uptake, and leading to increased control of virus infection We are interested in the utility of pH responsive nanoparticles possessing the ability to deliver drug cargo intracellularly, in a pH dependent manner, coupled with known and novel antiviral compounds The presented research describes the assembly and characterization of mPEG PAE methoxy polyethylene glycol PEG Poly(β amino ester) micelles These micelles have been designed and synthesized to possess the ability to disassemble at pH 6 0 the pH of the trans Golgi this will result in the release of encapsulated drug cargo, and presumably lead to failure of virus proteins to add complex sugars to high mannose chains and subsequent decrease in virus particle assembly and suppression of virus replication Described in this poster is the synthesis of mPEG PAE polymers and experiments leading to micellar formation of these polymers and biophysical characterization following encapsulation of with ribavirin, a broad spectrum antiviral Results show the proper formation and characterization of ribavirin encapsulated mPEG PAE micellar nanoparticles and give promise to their use in suppression of virus infectio

    Control of biodegradation of a Mg alloy in simulated body fluid

    Mg alloy AZ31 is an attractive candidate for coronary artery stents, as it possesses excellent biocompatibility in human body and good mechanical properties. However, AZ31 magnesium alloys generally have poor corrosion resistance in the body environment. This paper reports on the early stages of an investigation into the corrosion mechanism and the morphology of corrosion of AZ31 in simulated body fluid (SBF). The investigation will also consider ways of improving corrosion resistance of this alloy in SBF through the use of ionic liquids. The results to date have shown that AZ31 suffers severe localized pitting corrosion in SBF. The pits mainly develop adjacent to the Al-Mn intermetallic second phase in the α matrix. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy results revealed the presence of Mg, O, Ca, and P in the layer of corrosion product. Treatment of the AZ31 alloy prior to corrosion testing in SBF with the ionic liquid trimethyl (butyl) phosphonium diphenyl phosphate (P1444DPP) produced some increase in the corrosion resistance of the alloy

    As a leader in the global quick service restaurant market, McDonald’s USA, LLC aims to push the limits of their energy efficiency and tasked the Duke team with exploring the possibility of a ‘net zero energy’ restaurant. This exploration includes researching and proposing design aspects and technologies for a restaurant in the Chicago, IL area to achieve net zero energy (NZE) consumption onsite utilizing the LEED Volume Prototype restaurant as a baseline comparison. The project focused on improving current technologies and building design aspects including, but not limited to, the following areas: the building envelope, including roof and wall insulation and window design; the service hot water system (SHW); lighting fixtures and systems; and ventilation system. Due to the heavy influence of McDonald’s operational design on its brand, the recommendations included in the analysis account for the restaurant’s operational constraints. The final deliverable presents maximum energy savings possible without violating most of these constraints and estimates the amount of renewable energy necessary to meet the resulting decreased energy demand of the proposed ‘Net Zero Restaurant’ to meet the goal of a net zero energy site

    Public Health Nurses’ Perceptions of High School Dropout Rates as a Public Health Issue

    Education is one of the strongest predictors of health, and well-being. Early termination of education can lead to poorer health, shorter lifespans, and increased stress on the healthcare system. Improving overall high school graduation rates has been debated and discussed by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Ministry of Education, however, there is a paucity of research on increased graduation rates as they relate to public health in the Canadian context. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of liaison public health nurses (PHNs) who worked directly with the TDSB regarding their roles in terms of influencing students in Toronto, Ontario to complete high school. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model was the underlying conceptual framework for the study.Purposive sampling was used to select 10 PHNs who were interviewed regarding their role and involvement in high schools. The data was subjected to triangulation and analyzed to identify commonalities, trends and patterns. Findings from this study indicated that liaison PHNs believe that high school dropout rates are a public health issue and collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Public Health is needed to take action. Recommendations include more Canadian research that explores connections between health and school achievements and the expanded role of PHNs in Canadian high schools. Social change implications for this research include highlighting high school dropout rates as a public health concern in Canadian schools, particularly in communities of lower socioeconomic status. With increased research and resources, the Toronto public health system may work toward making improving graduation rates among their core mandate
