    Lay Spirituality, Crusading, and Reform in the Sermons of Jacques de Vitry

    Thirteenth-century papal reforms tied together crusading endeavors, clerical reform, the eradication of heresy, proper ecclesiastical governance, and the management of Christian-Jewish relations into a vision of a global Christendom. But it was men like Jacques de Vitry, a prominent preacher and Bishop of Acre, who strived to make these ideals a reality. He was involved in the key events and intellectual trends of the later twelfth and early thirteenth century. Trained at the University of Paris, Jacques worked among the female religious communities in the Southern Low Countries, preached against heresy and for crusade, and travelled to the Holy Land where he served as the bishop of Acre and participated in the Fifth Crusade. This dissertation examines his multifaceted work as a valuable lens into the various arenas he participated in. Based upon a programmatic examination of Jacques’ sermon collections in their manuscript context, this project reveals development in their form, and the expansion of their content to suit later readers’ needs. Second, it reconstructs in detail several aspects of Jacques’ thought, which in turn influenced the broader academic discussions in the Middle Ages. It argues that Jacques’ message, just as his life, depended on an affirmation of collaboration between the sexes, whether between clerics and holy women or husbands and wives. This work, therefore, evaluates the relationship between clerics and holy women and notions of clerical masculinity. Through situating these relationships within the context of reported violence against holy women at the Siege of Liège, this investigation examines the possible impact of violence and trauma on Jacques’ investment in these communities and his understanding of gender. This dependence on women to assist his message by embodying and transmitting it can be seen, as well, in his involvement in the Fifth Crusade. Therefore, it traces connections between gendered pastoral care and crusade propaganda in the twelfth and thirteenth century to reveal the interest of both men and women in policing and defining gendered boundaries within the context of war. This dissertation, therefore, uncovers the vital relationship between crusade initiatives and a specifically gendered pastoral care in the early thirteenth century

    Production of linguistic prosody in subjects with left hemisphere damage.

    This study examined the production of linguistic prosody in left hemisphere damaged (LHD) and control subjects. Preliminary findings indicated that the control group produced duration, F0 and amplitude cues within prosodic structures to convey differences in lexical stress and syntactic boundaries. Whereas, the LHD group produced variations only in F0 and amplitude to convey nouns, duration to convey verbs and did not produce prosodic variations in syllables located at syntactic junctures. The productions of both groups will be played for listeners to determine if the acoustic patterns are adequate to convey differences in nouns and verbs and syntactic boundaries

    Development, Implementation and Evaluation of Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones: A National Survey

    Entry-level clinical doctorate degrees are becoming more prevalent in the United States for occupational therapy. As indicated by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education® standards, the doctoral capstone is an essential component to the entry-level doctorate degree. Despite the importance of the doctoral capstone, there have been limited publications about doctoral capstone development, implementation, and evaluation. A retrospective review was completed on qualitative descriptive data from a national electronic survey of entry-level occupational therapy doctoral (EL-OTD) programs regarding implementation of the doctoral capstone experience and project. Fifteen EL-OTD programs responded to the survey. Based on results, there was not one universal framework used for development, implementation, or evaluation. Aggregate data is presented for the timeframe of the doctoral capstone, role of faculty advisors, professions of capstone site mentors, number of students completing the experience at more than one site, and methods used for evaluation of student performance. Of the eight possible focus areas for the doctoral capstone, advanced clinical skills was the focus most frequently selected followed by program and policy development. Understanding current methods used for development, implementation, and evaluation of the doctoral capstone allows mentors, community leaders, and occupational therapy educators to gain a greater understanding of the implications the doctoral capstone may have on student outcomes. Survey results indicate great variety in approaches to design, implementation, and evaluation of the doctoral capstone

    Forecasting domestic water consumption from smart meter readings using statistical methods and artificial neural networks

    PublishedThis paper presents an artificial neural network-based model of domestic water consumption. The model is based on real-world data collected from smart meters, and represents a step toward being able to model real-time smart meter data. A range of input schemas are examined, including real meter readings and summary statistics derived from readings, and it is found that the models can predict some consumption but struggle to accurately match in cases of peak usage

    Bisperoxovanadium promotes motor neuron survival and neuromuscular innervation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron (MN) disease, with no present cure. The progressive loss of MNs is the hallmark of ALS. We have previously shown the therapeutic effects of the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) inhibitor, potassium bisperoxo (picolinato) vanadium (bpV[pic]), in models of neurological injury and demonstrated significant neuroprotective effects on MN survival. However, accumulating evidence suggests PTEN is detrimental for MN survival in ALS. Therefore, we hypothesized that treating the mutant superoxide dismutase 1 G93A (mSOD1G93A) mouse model of ALS during motor neuron degeneration and an in vitro model of mSOD1G93A motor neuron injury with bpV(pic) would prevent motor neuron loss. To test our hypothesis, we treated mSOD1G93A mice intraperitoneally daily with 400 ÎĽg/kg bpV(pic) from 70 to 90 days of age. Immunolabeled MNs and microglial reactivity were analyzed in lumbar spinal cord tissue, and bpV(pic) treatment significantly ameliorated ventral horn motor neuron loss in mSOD1G93A mice (p = 0.003) while not significantly altering microglial reactivity (p = 0.701). Treatment with bpV(pic) also significantly increased neuromuscular innervation (p = 0.018) but did not affect muscle atrophy. We also cultured motor neuron-like NSC-34 cells transfected with a plasmid to overexpress mutant SOD1G93A and starved them in serum-free medium for 24 h with and without bpV(pic) and downstream inhibitor of Akt signaling, LY294002. In vitro, bpV(pic) improved neuronal viability, and Akt inhibition reversed this protective effect (p < 0.05). In conclusion, our study indicates systemic bpV(pic) treatment could be a valuable neuroprotective therapy for ALS

    Evaluation of Alcohol Preference and Drinking in msP Rats Bearing a Crhr1 Promoter Polymorphism

    Alcoholism is a pervasive societal problem, yet available pharmacotherapies fail to treat most sufferers. The type 1 corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF1) receptor has received much attention for its putative role in the progression to alcohol dependence, although at present its success in clinical trials has been limited. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the rat Crhr1 promoter have been identified in the Marchigian substrain of Sardinian alcohol-preferring (msP) rats. Unlike other Wistar-derived alcohol-preferring lines, nondependent msP rats reduce their alcohol self-administration in response to CRF1 antagonists and show increased brain CRF1 expression. The current study tested the hypotheses that the A alleles in the Crhr1 promoter polymorphisms are: (1) unique to msP (vs. CRF1 antagonist-insensitive) alcohol-preferring lines and (2) associate with greater alcohol preference or intake. Two related polymorphisms were observed in which both loci on a given chromosome were either mutant variant (A) or wild-type (G) alleles within the distal Crhr1 promoter of 17/25 msP rats (68%), as compared to 0/23 Indiana P rats, 0/20 Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats bred at Scripps (Scr:sP) and 0/21 outbred Wistar rats. Alcohol consumption in msP rats did not differ according to the presence of Crhr1 A alleles, but greater alcohol preference (98%) was observed in A allele homozygous msP rats (AA) compared to msP rats with wild-type (GG, 91%) or heterozygous (GA, 91%) genotypes. The greater alcohol preference reflected decreased water intake, accompanied by reduced total calories consumed by AA rats. The data show that msP rats differentially possess mutant A variant alleles in the polymorphic promoter region of the Crhr1 gene that may differentially regulate consumption

    Spectral variability in fine-scale drone-based imaging spectroscopy does not impede detection of target invasive plant species

    Land managers are making concerted efforts to control the spread of invasive plants, a task that demands extensive ecosystem monitoring, for which unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) are becoming increasingly popular. The high spatial resolution of unoccupied aerial vehicles imagery may positively or negatively affect plant species differentiation, as reflectance spectra of pixels may be highly variable when finely resolved. We assessed this impact on detection of invasive plant species Ailanthus altissima (tree of heaven) and Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn olive) using fine-resolution images collected in northwestern Virginia in June 2020 by a unoccupied aerial vehicles with a Headwall Hyperspec visible and near-infrared hyperspectral imager. Though E. umbellata had greater intraspecific variability relative to interspecific variability over more wavelengths than A. altissima, the classification accuracy was greater for E. umbellata (95%) than for A. altissima (66%). This suggests that spectral differences between species of interest and others are not necessarily obscured by intraspecific variability. Therefore, the use of unoccupied aerial vehicles-based spectroscopy for species identification may overcome reflectance variability in fine resolution imagery

    What Predicts Hospital Admissions in Community-Dwelling People With Parkinsonism?

    Objectives: Previous studies have looked at the reasons for hospital admission in people with parkinsonism (PwP), yet few have looked at factors that precipitate admission. Methods: People with parkinsonism with a diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson disease of Hoehn and Yahr stage III-V and those with Parkinson plus syndromes were assessed for motor and nonmotor symptoms, quality of life, and functional performance. Logistic regression was used to investigate predictors of hospital admission over the subsequent 2 years. Results: Overall, 162 patients consented to be part of the study. Seventy-one PwP (43.8%) had at least 1 hospital admission, and 17 (10.5%) patients had 3 or more admissions to hospital. Poorer cognition, more nonmotor symptoms, poorer quality of life, slower timed-up-and-go test scores, and abnormal swallow predicted a subsequent hospital admission. Discussion: Our study emphasizes the importance of nonmotor symptoms in predicting admission. A cost–benefit analysis of early intervention to prevent admission should be considered
