    Lymphoma Therapy and Adverse Events: Nursing Strategies for Thinking Critically and Acting Decisively

    BACKGROUND: Multiple treatment options, combined with disease heterogeneity, have created nursing challenges in the management of adverse events (AEs) during antilymphoma therapy. Testing has revealed that less than half of participating nurses correctly graded peripheral neuropathy and neutropenia related to antilymphoma regimens. OBJECTIVES: This article identifies nursing challenges in the management of AEs associated with therapy for lymphomas and describes how strategies in critical thinking can help meet those challenges. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search in oncology nursing, nursing education, and critical thinking was conducted; participant responses to pre- and post-tests at nursing education programs were evaluated; and a roundtable meeting of authors was convened. FINDINGS: Oncology nurses can cultivate critical thinking skills, practice thinking critically in relation to team members and patients, leverage information from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, and manage workflow to allow more opportunity for critical thinking

    How Job Changes Affect People’s Lives: Evidence from Subjective Well-being Data

    Starting a new job is able to boost people's careers, but might come at the expense of other areas of life. To investigate individual implications of job mobility, we analyse the effects of job changes on time‐use and indicators of subjective well‐being using rich data from a representative German panel survey. We find that job switchers report relatively high levels of life satisfaction, at least for the first time after the job change. There is no such ‘honeymoon’ period for job changes triggered by plant closures. Instead, we find evidence for a harmful impact of involuntary mobility on family life

    The effect of scale-free topology on the robustness and evolvability of genetic regulatory networks

    We investigate how scale-free (SF) and Erdos-Renyi (ER) topologies affect the interplay between evolvability and robustness of model gene regulatory networks with Boolean threshold dynamics. In agreement with Oikonomou and Cluzel (2006) we find that networks with SFin topologies, that is SF topology for incoming nodes and ER topology for outgoing nodes, are significantly more evolvable towards specific oscillatory targets than networks with ER topology for both incoming and outgoing nodes. Similar results are found for networks with SFboth and SFout topologies. The functionality of the SFout topology, which most closely resembles the structure of biological gene networks (Babu et al., 2004), is compared to the ER topology in further detail through an extension to multiple target outputs, with either an oscillatory or a non-oscillatory nature. For multiple oscillatory targets of the same length, the differences between SFout and ER networks are enhanced, but for non-oscillatory targets both types of networks show fairly similar evolvability. We find that SF networks generate oscillations much more easily than ER networks do, and this may explain why SF networks are more evolvable than ER networks are for oscillatory phenotypes. In spite of their greater evolvability, we find that networks with SFout topologies are also more robust to mutations than ER networks. Furthermore, the SFout topologies are more robust to changes in initial conditions (environmental robustness). For both topologies, we find that once a population of networks has reached the target state, further neutral evolution can lead to an increase in both the mutational robustness and the environmental robustness to changes in initial conditions.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure

    The Optical Polarisation of the Vela Pulsar revisited

    In this work we present a revised measurement of the phase-averaged optical polarisation of the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45), for which only one value has been published so far (Wagner & Seifert 2000). Our measurement has been obtained through an accurate reanalysis of archival polarisation observations obtained with the FORS instrument at the VLT. We have measured a phase-averaged linear polarisation degree P=9.4% +/- 4% and a position angle 146 +/- 11 deg, very close to the ones of the axis of symmetry of the X-ray arcs and jets detected by Chandra and of the pulsar proper motion.We have compared the measured phase-averaged optical polarisation with the expectations of different pulsars' magnetosphere models. We have found that all models consistently predict too large values of the phase-averaged linear polarization with respect to the observed one. This is probably a consequence of present models' limitations which neglect the contributions of various depolarisation effects. Interestingly, for the outer gap model we have found that, assuming synchrotron radiation for the optical emission, the observed polarisation position angle also implies an alignment between the pulsar rotational axis and the axis of symmetry of the X-ray arcs and jets.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Passive Attitude Control to Decrease CubeSatellite Complexity

    Attitude control is often a requirement for the optimal functionality of satellite payloads. The McMaster Neutron Dosimetry and Exploration (NEUDOSE) mission aims to measure charged and neutral radiation in Low Earth Orbit. NEUDOSE can detect particles effectively from any direction due to its spherical symmetry, meaning unlike most satellite missions, it does not require attitude control to function. The attitude is still crucial for the mission in order to achieve optimal communication. The NEUDOSE satellite utilizes Ultra High Frequency and Very High Frequency dipole antennas for communication. If the satellite’s attitude lines up in a specific orientation, communication will be hindered due to the nature of the antenna’s radiation pattern. With short access times to the ground station, and relatively small amounts of data being transferred, effective communication is important for the success of the mission. Initially the NEUDOSE mission had an active attitude control system, but with the lack of pointing requirements for the payload’s operation, and a stringent power budget, the active system was removed. A passive magnetic attitude control system was then explored as a solution to optimize communication, without adding much complexity or burden on the power budget
