Magnetic vortex oscillator driven by dc spin-polarized current
Transfer of angular momentum from a spin-polarized current to a ferromagnet
provides an efficient means to control the dynamics of nanomagnets. A peculiar
consequence of this spin-torque, the ability to induce persistent oscillations
of a nanomagnet by applying a dc current, has previously been reported only for
spatially uniform nanomagnets. Here we demonstrate that a quintessentially
nonuniform magnetic structure, a magnetic vortex, isolated within a nanoscale
spin valve structure, can be excited into persistent microwave-frequency
oscillations by a spin-polarized dc current. Comparison to micromagnetic
simulations leads to identification of the oscillations with a precession of
the vortex core. The oscillations, which can be obtained in essentially zero
magnetic field, exhibit linewidths that can be narrower than 300 kHz, making
these highly compact spin-torque vortex oscillator devices potential candidates
for microwave signal-processing applications, and a powerful new tool for
fundamental studies of vortex dynamics in magnetic nanostructures.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Rhomboid family member 2 regulates cytoskeletal stress-associated Keratin 16.
Keratin 16 (K16) is a cytoskeletal scaffolding protein highly expressed at pressure-bearing sites of the mammalian footpad. It can be induced in hyperproliferative states such as wound healing, inflammation and cancer. Here we show that the inactive rhomboid protease RHBDF2 (iRHOM2) regulates thickening of the footpad epidermis through its interaction with K16. K16 expression is absent in the thinned footpads of irhom2-/- mice compared with irhom2+/+mice, due to reduced keratinocyte proliferation. Gain-of-function mutations in iRHOM2 underlie Tylosis with oesophageal cancer (TOC), characterized by palmoplantar thickening, upregulate K16 with robust downregulation of its type II keratin binding partner, K6. By orchestrating the remodelling and turnover of K16, and uncoupling it from K6, iRHOM2 regulates the epithelial response to physical stress. These findings contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying hyperproliferation of the palmoplantar epidermis in both physiological and disease states, and how this 'stress' keratin is regulated
The sudden change phenomenon of quantum discord
Even if the parameters determining a system's state are varied smoothly, the
behavior of quantum correlations alike to quantum discord, and of its classical
counterparts, can be very peculiar, with the appearance of non-analyticities in
its rate of change. Here we review this sudden change phenomenon (SCP)
discussing some important points related to it: Its uncovering,
interpretations, and experimental verifications, its use in the context of the
emergence of the pointer basis in a quantum measurement process, its appearance
and universality under Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, its theoretical
and experimental investigation in some other physical scenarios, and the
related phenomenon of double sudden change of trace distance discord. Several
open questions are identified, and we envisage that in answering them we will
gain significant further insight about the relation between the SCP and the
symmetry-geometric aspects of the quantum state space.Comment: Lectures on General Quantum Correlations and their Applications, F.

Beyond in-phase and anti-phase coordination in a model of joint action
In 1985, Haken, Kelso and Bunz proposed a system of coupled nonlinear oscillators as a model of rhythmic movement patterns in human bimanual coordination. Since then, the HakenâKelsoâBunz (HKB) model has become a modelling paradigm applied extensively in all areas of movement science, including interpersonal motor coordination. However, all previous studies have followed a line of analysis based on slowly varying amplitudes and rotating wave approximations. These approximations lead to a reduced system, consisting of a single differential equation representing the evolution of the relative phase of the two coupled oscillators: the HKB model of the relative phase. Here we take a different approach and systematically investigate the behaviour of the HKB model in the full four-dimensional state space and for general coupling strengths. We perform detailed numerical bifurcation analyses and reveal that the HKB model supports previously unreported dynamical regimes as well as bistability between a variety of coordination patterns. Furthermore, we identify the stability boundaries of distinct coordination regimes in the model and discuss the applicability of our findings to interpersonal coordination and other joint action tasks
Global nuts and local mangoes: a critical reading of the UNDP Growing Sustainable Business Initiative in Kenya
This article provides a conceptual and empirical assessment of UN brokered partnerships that seek to deepen or create inclusive and sustainable agricultural supply chains in sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically it appraises the decision-making mechanisms, processes of partnership brokerage and project implementation within the UNDP Growing Sustainable Business Initiative (GSB) in Kenya. The paper argues that the lack of bottom-up participation in decision-making mechanisms and the predominantly economic imperatives driving the GSB partnership projects have failed to reach out to the partnershipsâ intended beneficiariesâKenyan small producers of nuts and mangoes. In conclusion it is suggested that opening up the GSB platform might hold the promise of reconciling sustainable business models with (some) poverty reduction

Quantum probability in decision making from quantum information representation of neuronal states
The recent wave of interest to modeling the process of decision making with the aid of the quantum formalism gives rise to the following question: âHow can neurons generate quantum-like statistical data?â (There is a plenty of such data in cognitive psychology and social science.) Our model is based on quantum-like representation of uncertainty in generation of action potentials. This uncertainty is a consequence of complexity of electrochemical processes in the brain; in particular, uncertainty of triggering an action potential by the membrane potential. Quantum information state spaces can be considered as extensions of classical information spaces corresponding to neural codes; e.g., 0/1, quiescent/firing neural code. The key point is that processing of information by the brain involves superpositions of such states. Another key point is that a neuronal group performing some psychological function F is an open quantum system. It interacts with the surrounding electrochemical environment. The process of decision making is described as decoherence in the basis of eigenstates of F. A decision state is a steady state. This is a linear representation of complex nonlinear dynamics of electrochemical states. Linearity guarantees exponentially fast convergence to the decision state
Alcohol and cardio-respiratory deaths in Chinese: a population-based case-control study of 32,462 older Hong Kong adults
Background: In observational studies moderate alcohol use reduces cardio-respiratory mortality. However observational studies may be biased by many factors including residual confounding by unmeasured differences between moderate alcohol users and other groups or by changes in alcohol use with ill-health and aging. We used two different analytic strategies in an under-studied population, i.e. southern Chinese, to provide an assessment of the specific impact of moderate alcohol use on mortality from ischemic heart disease (IHD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Methods: In a population-based case-control study of all adult deaths in Hong Kong Chinese in 1998, we used adjusted logistic regression to compare alcohol use in decedents aged â„ 60 years from IHD (2270) and COPD (1441) with 10,320 living and 9043 dead controls (all non-alcohol related deaths). We also examined whether the association of alcohol use with death from IHD or COPD varied with sex or smoking status. Results: Using living controls and adjusted for age, socio-economic status and lifestyle, occasional and moderate alcohol use were generally associated with lower mortality from IHD and COPD. However, using dead controls the protection of occasional and moderate alcohol use appeared to be limited to ever-smokers for IHD (odds ratio (OR) 0.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.46 to 0.73 for moderate compared to never-use in ever-smokers, but OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.76 to 1.50 in never-smokers), and possibly to men for COPD. High alcohol use was associated with lower IHD mortality and possibly with lower COPD mortality. Conclusion: High levels of alcohol use in an older Chinese population were associated with lower IHD mortality. Moderate alcohol use was less consistently protective against IHD mortality. Alcohol use was associated with lower COPD mortality particularly in men, either due to some yet to be clarified properties of alcohol or as the artefactual result of genetic selection into alcohol use in a Chinese population. Given the increasing use of alcohol in China with economic development, other designs and analytic strategies are needed to assess the impact of alcohol in this population, so that an evidence-based public health policy can be formulated.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Search for Dark Matter Annihilation in the Galactic Center with IceCube-79
The Milky Way is expected to be embedded in a halo of dark matter particles,
with the highest density in the central region, and decreasing density with the
halo-centric radius. Dark matter might be indirectly detectable at Earth
through a flux of stable particles generated in dark matter annihilations and
peaked in the direction of the Galactic Center. We present a search for an
excess flux of muon (anti-) neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the
Galactic Center using the cubic-kilometer-sized IceCube neutrino detector at
the South Pole. There, the Galactic Center is always seen above the horizon.
Thus, new and dedicated veto techniques against atmospheric muons are required
to make the southern hemisphere accessible for IceCube. We used 319.7 live-days
of data from IceCube operating in its 79-string configuration during 2010 and
2011. No neutrino excess was found and the final result is compatible with the
background. We present upper limits on the self-annihilation cross-section,
\left, for WIMP masses ranging from 30 GeV up to
10 TeV, assuming cuspy (NFW) and flat-cored (Burkert) dark matter halo
profiles, reaching down to cm s, and
cm s for the
channel, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to EPJ-C, added references, extended
