Possible Microscopic Doping Mechanism in Tl-2201
X-ray absorption spectroscopy on oxygen-annealed, self-flux-grown single
crystals of Tl-2201 suggests a microscopic doping mechanism whereby
interstitial oxygens are attracted to copper substituted on the thallium site,
contributing holes to both the planes and to these coppers, and typically
promoting only one hole to the plane rather than two. These copper substituents
would provide an intrinsic hole doping. The evidence for this is discussed,

Encapsulated Single Crystal Growth and Annealing of the High-Temperature Superconductor Tl-2201
Highly-perfect platelet single crystals of Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+d} (Tl-2201) were
grown by a self-flux technique. A novel encapsulation scheme allowed the
precursors to react prior to the sealing required to contain volatile thallium
oxides, and permitted the removal of melt at the conclusion of growth,
reproducibly producing high yields of clean crystals. The crystals were
annealed under well-controlled oxygen partial pressures, then characterised.
They have sharp superconducting transitions, narrow X-ray rocking curves and a
low 4% substitution of thallium by copper, all evidence of their high
perfection and homogeneity. The crystals are orthorhombic at most dopings, and
a previously unreported commensurate superlattice distortion is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of Crystal Growt
Domain Wall Resistance in Perpendicular (Ga,Mn)As: dependence on pinning
We have investigated the domain wall resistance for two types of domain walls
in a (Ga,Mn)As Hall bar with perpendicular magnetization. A sizeable positive
intrinsic DWR is inferred for domain walls that are pinned at an etching step,
which is quite consistent with earlier observations. However, much lower
intrinsic domain wall resistance is obtained when domain walls are formed by
pinning lines in unetched material. This indicates that the spin transport
across a domain wall is strongly influenced by the nature of the pinning.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Design and User Satisfaction of Interactive Maps for Visually Impaired People
Multimodal interactive maps are a solution for presenting spatial information
to visually impaired people. In this paper, we present an interactive
multimodal map prototype that is based on a tactile paper map, a multi-touch
screen and audio output. We first describe the different steps for designing an
interactive map: drawing and printing the tactile paper map, choice of
multi-touch technology, interaction technologies and the software architecture.
Then we describe the method used to assess user satisfaction. We provide data
showing that an interactive map - although based on a unique, elementary,
double tap interaction - has been met with a high level of user satisfaction.
Interestingly, satisfaction is independent of a user's age, previous visual
experience or Braille experience. This prototype will be used as a platform to
design advanced interactions for spatial learning
On the top-antitop invariant mass spectrum at the LHC from a Higgs boson signal perspective
We investigate the effect of one-loop corrections of on the invariant mass spectrum at the Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) in presence of both resonant and non-resonant Higgs boson
effects. We show that corrections of involving a
non-resonant Higgs boson are comparable to or even larger than those involving
interference with the s-channel resonant Higgs boson amplitude and that both of
these are subleading with respect to all other (non-Higgs) diagrams through
that order. We also compute the contribution through of resonant Higgs boson production (i.e. Higgs
production via fusion) as well as the pure QCD ones of . Altogether, we show that the well known peak-dip structure of
the spectrum emerging from interference effects between the
-channel -induced Leading Order (LO) QCD diagrams and the one due to a
Higgs boson in s-channel via -fusion is drastically swamped by the
remainder of the terms of discussed above.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Electron spin coherence in semiconductors: Considerations for a spin-based solid state quantum computer architecture
We theoretically consider coherence times for spins in two quantum computer
architectures, where the qubit is the spin of an electron bound to a P donor
impurity in Si or within a GaAs quantum dot. We show that low temperature
decoherence is dominated by spin-spin interactions, through spectral diffusion
and dipolar flip-flop mechanisms. These contributions lead to 1-100 s
calculated spin coherence times for a wide range of parameters, much higher
than former estimates based on measurements.Comment: Role of the dipolar interaction clarified; Included discussion on the

Apesar do crescente interesse pela agricultura orgânica, são poucas as informações de pesquisa disponíveis sobre o assunto. Assim, num Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico foram comparados os efeitos de sistemas de cultivo orgânico e convencional, para as culturas do tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum) e do milho (Zea mays), sobre a comunidade de organismos do solo e suas atividades. As populações de fungos,bactérias e actinomicetos, determinadas pela contagem de colônias em meio de cultura, foram semelhantes para os dois sistemas de produção. A atividade microbiana, avaliada pela evolução de CO2, manteve-se superior no sistema orgânico, sendo que em determinadas avaliações foi o dobro da evolução verificada no sistema convencional. O número de espécimes de minhoca foi praticamente dez vezes maior no sistema orgânico. Não foi observada diferença na taxa de decomposição de matéria orgânica entre os dois sistemas. De modo geral, o número de indivíduos de microartrópodos foi superior no sistema orgânico do que no sistema convencional, refletindo no maior índice de diversidade de Shannon. As maiores populações de insetos foram as da ordem Collembola, enquanto para os ácaros a maior população foi a da superfamília Oribatuloidea. Indivíduos dos grupos Aranae, Chilopoda, Dyplopoda, Pauropoda, Protura e Symphyla foram ocasionalmente coletados e de forma similar entre os sistemas
Coherent quantum transport in narrow constrictions in the presence of a finite-range longitudinally polarized time-dependent field
We have studied the quantum transport in a narrow constriction acted upon by
a finite-range longitudinally polarized time-dependent electric field. The
electric field induces coherent inelastic scatterings which involve both
intra-subband and inter-sideband transitions. Subsequently, the dc conductance
G is found to exhibit suppressed features. These features are recognized as the
quasi-bound-state (QBS) features which are associated with electrons making
transitions to the vicinity of a subband bottom, of which the density of states
is singular. Having valley-like instead of dip-like structures, these QBS
features are different from the G characteristics for constrictions acted upon
by a finite-range time-modulated potential. In addition, the subband bottoms in
the time-dependent electric field region are shifted upward by an energy
proportional to the square of the electric field and inversely proportional to
the square of the frequency. This effective potential barrier is originated
from the square of the vector potential and it leads to the interesting
field-sensitive QBS features. An experimental set-up is proposed for the

Mapping Vesta: First Results from Dawn’s Survey Orbit
The geologic objectives of the Dawn Mission [1] are
to derive Vesta’s shape, map the surface geology,
understand the geological context and contribute to
the determination of the asteroids’ origin and
evolution.Geomorphology and distribution of surface features
will provide evidence for impact cratering, tectonic activity, volcanism, and regolith processes. Spectral
measurements of the surface will provide evidence of
the compositional characteristics of geological units.
Age information, as derived from crater sizefrequency
distributions, provides the stratigraphic
context for the structural and compositional mapping
results, thus revealing the geologic history of Vesta.
We present here the first results of the Dawn mission
from data collected during the approach to Vesta, and
its first discrete orbit phase – the Survey Orbit, which
lasts 21 days after the spacecraft had established a
circular polar orbit at a radius of ~3000 km with a
beta angle of 10°-15°
The First VERITAS Telescope
The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic
Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February
2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary
of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the
results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between
real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV -ray observations of the
Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give
results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as
