Interactions of strings and equivariant homology theories

We introduce the notion of the space of parallel strings with partially summable labels, which can be viewed as a geometrically constructed group completion of the space of particles with labels. We utilize this to construct a machinery which produces equivariant generalized homology theories from such simple and abundant data as partial monoids.Comment: This is the version published by Geometry & Topology Monographs on 18 April 200

The space of intervals in a Euclidean space

For a path-connected space X, a well-known theorem of Segal, May and Milgram asserts that the configuration space of finite points in R^n with labels in X is weakly homotopy equivalent to the n-th loop-suspension of X. In this paper, we introduce a space I_n(X) of intervals suitably topologized in R^n with labels in a space X and show that it is weakly homotopy equivalent to n-th loop-suspension of X without the assumption on path-connectivity.Comment: Published by Algebraic and Geometric Topology at http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/agt/AGTVol5/agt-5-62.abs.htm

Continuous functors as a model for the equivariant stable homotopy category

In this paper, we investigate the properties of the category of equivariant diagram spectra indexed on the category W_G of based G-spaces homeomorphic to finite G-CW-complexes for a compact Lie group G. Using the machinery of Mandell, May, Schwede, and Shipley, we show that there is a "stable model structure" on this category of diagram spectra which admits a monoidal Quillen equivalence to the category of orthogonal G-spectra. We construct a second "absolute stable model structure" which is Quillen equivalent to the "stable model structure". Our main result is a concrete identification of the fibrant objects in the absolute stable model structure. There is a model-theoretic identification of the fibrant continuous functors in the absolute stable model structure as functors Z such that for A in W_G the collection {Z(A smash S^W)} form an Omega-G-prespectrum as W varies over the universe U. We show that a functor is fibrant if and only if it takes G-homotopy pushouts to G-homotopy pullbacks and is suitably compatible with equivariant Atiyah duality for orbit spaces G/H_+ which embed in U. Our motivation for this work is the development of a recognition principle for equivariant infinite loop spaces.Comment: This is the version published by Algebraic & Geometric Topology on 8 December 200

Photo-induced volume changes in selenium. Tight-binding molecular dynamics study

Tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations of photo-excitations in small Se clusters (isolated Se8_8 ring and helical Se chain) and glassy Se networks (containing 162 atoms) were carried out in order to analyse the photo induced instability inside the amorphous selenium. In the cluster systems after taking an electron from the highest occupied molecular orbital to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital a bond breaking occurs. In the glassy networks photoinduced volume expansion was observed and at the same time the number of coordination defects changed significantly due to illumination

Encapsulated Single Crystal Growth and Annealing of the High-Temperature Superconductor Tl-2201

Highly-perfect platelet single crystals of Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+d} (Tl-2201) were grown by a self-flux technique. A novel encapsulation scheme allowed the precursors to react prior to the sealing required to contain volatile thallium oxides, and permitted the removal of melt at the conclusion of growth, reproducibly producing high yields of clean crystals. The crystals were annealed under well-controlled oxygen partial pressures, then characterised. They have sharp superconducting transitions, narrow X-ray rocking curves and a low 4% substitution of thallium by copper, all evidence of their high perfection and homogeneity. The crystals are orthorhombic at most dopings, and a previously unreported commensurate superlattice distortion is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of Crystal Growt
